Steam is free to download. Use Valve’s official installer, then verify each game’s requirements for your operating system before you install or buy it.
Download Steam only from Valve’s official Steam page: store.steampowered.com/about. Choose the installer for your desktop operating system, run it, open Steam, and sign in or create an account. Then check every game’s own Steam Store page before installing it—having the Steam client does not mean every game will run on your computer.

Download and install Steam
- Open Valve’s official Steam download page.
- Select the installer offered for your computer’s operating system.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Open Steam when installation finishes.
- Sign in to an existing Steam account or create one.
- Before purchasing or installing a game, open its Store page and read its operating-system and hardware requirements.
Avoid third-party “Steam downloader” sites, repackaged installers, and download managers. The official Valve page is the appropriate place to get the current client.

Windows: Steam client support is not game compatibility
Use a currently supported version of Windows. Steam Support’s current guidance covers Windows 10 and later, but individual games can have stricter requirements. A game may require 64-bit Windows, a particular Windows release, newer graphics drivers, more memory, additional storage, or a capable GPU.

On a game’s Steam Store page, check the System Requirements section before you buy or install it. Treat the listed minimum and recommended specifications as requirements for that title, not as universal Steam requirements.
Mac: use macOS 12 or later, then check each game
For a current installation, use an up-to-date macOS. Valve ended official Steam support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025; future Steam versions depend on features and security updates available in macOS 12 Monterey or later.
Steam has a 64-bit macOS client, but game availability remains title-specific. Apple ended support for 32-bit Mac applications beginning with macOS 10.15 Catalina. As a result, an older 32-bit Mac game can still appear in your Steam library while being unable to run on your current Mac.

Before installing a game, confirm that its Store page lists macOS support and that its requirements match your Mac and macOS version.
Linux: choose the client carefully and treat Proton as title-specific
Valve’s official Linux support guidance centers on Ubuntu desktop environments using Unity, GNOME, or KDE. That does not mean every Linux distribution—or every Steam game—has identical support.
Steam includes a SteamOS + Linux store filter to help find native Linux titles. Some Windows-only games may also work through Steam Play and Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer built on a modified Wine stack and graphics API implementations. Proton compatibility is not guaranteed: anti-cheat systems, middleware, codecs, and incomplete Windows functionality can prevent a particular game from working correctly.

Check the game’s Steam information and relevant official or community compatibility details before depending on Proton for a purchase or a multiplayer session.
SteamVR note for Linux users
The warning to use native distribution packages instead of Snap or Flatpak applies specifically to SteamVR for Linux, where those package formats can interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. It is not a blanket statement about every ordinary Steam desktop installation.

What you do not need to download Steam
You do not need a Steam Deck, Valve Index, controller, VR headset, Steam Wallet card, or Steam Link device to install the desktop client. Those are separate hardware or feature paths.

Steam Link and Remote Play are optional. They stream from a computer that is already running Steam to another device; they are not part of the initial installation requirement. Controller support is also determined by the individual game, not by whether Steam is installed.
Buying a game after installation
Check the game’s supported operating systems and system requirements first. If you purchase a game and it is not a fit, Steam says games and software applications are generally eligible for a refund when requested within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, subject to its published details and exceptions. Requests outside those limits may be reviewed, and local consumer rights can provide additional protections.

No. Steam Link and Remote Play are optional streaming features that connect to a computer already running Steam.

Will every Windows Steam game work on Linux with Proton?
No. Proton can make some Windows-only games playable on Linux, but support is title-specific and can be affected by anti-cheat, middleware, codecs, or other game features.
If I own a Steam game, will it run on my Mac?
No. On modern macOS, older 32-bit Mac games may remain in your library but cannot run. Check the game’s macOS support and requirements on its Store page.
Do I need a controller, Steam Deck, or gift card to use Steam?
No physical product is required. Steam Deck, controllers, VR hardware, Steam Wallet cards, and other accessories are optional and separate from downloading the client.
