Do not use an unofficial download repository for the Steam installer. If a search result, advertisement, or third-party page redirects you elsewhere, return to the official Steam website before downloading.
Step 2: Select “Install Steam”
Select the “Install Steam” button or link on the official page. Steam’s website presents Steam as a platform for playing, discussing, and creating games, and the “Install Steam” control is the download entry point for the client.
The exact browser download indicator can vary between Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers. Wait for the macOS installer download to finish before opening it.

Step 3: Open the downloaded macOS installer

Step 4: Complete the macOS installation prompts
Follow the on-screen instructions supplied by the macOS installer. Accept the normal prompts and allow the Steam application to be installed in the suggested Applications location unless you have a specific reason to choose another location.

Open Steam after installation from the Applications folder, Launchpad, or Spotlight. You can also open Steam from the location you selected during installation.
The first launch may display additional normal app prompts or begin the client’s own setup and update process. Follow the instructions shown by Steam, and allow the client time to finish before attempting to install a game.

A controller may be useful for a game that supports one, but controller support depends on the individual game. Steam says it encourages developers to include controller support; readers should check the game’s own listing rather than assume universal support.

What does Steam provide after installation?
After installation and sign-in, Steam provides the client used to browse, acquire, install, update, and launch supported games, along with community features. Steam’s official page also advertises automatic game updates and controller support, but those platform features do not change the basic installation requirements.
