Is The Sims 4 free?
Yes. EA made the base game free-to-play on October 18, 2022, for PC and Mac through EA app, and for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. EA continued releasing paid Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, Kits, and bundles after the base game became free.

EA’s current purchase page separately labels the base game as $0.00 and lists downloadable add-ons as paid content. In other words, “The Sims 4 is free” means the base game is free—not that all DLC is included. See EA’s current purchase page for the distinction.
How to claim legitimate free Sims 4 content
EA’s current free-content route is through in-game Marketplace Free Maker Drops. These are creator-made Marketplace items, not full Expansion Packs.
- Launch The Sims 4.
- Open Marketplace from the Main Menu, Live Mode, Build Mode, or Create a Sim.
- On the Discover page, open the Free section.
- Select an available Free Maker Drop.
- Choose Buy with Moola when the price shows 0 Moola.
- Select Buy to confirm the claim.
- Select Download Now if prompted. If it does not appear, return to the item page and select Download.
- Return to the Main Menu before launching back into your save. EA says the claimed content will then be ready to use.
You can also find these items through Marketplace → Browse, then sort the results by Free. If the game does not download the item automatically, check the Download Manager: with auto-downloads disabled, Download Now may appear after claiming; with auto-downloads enabled, the item downloads automatically and appears as owned.

What is included in a Free Maker Drop?
Free Maker Drops are small creator-content releases rather than new worlds, careers, systems, or dozens of Build/Buy and Create a Sim items like an Expansion Pack. EA’s first announced examples included:

The Free Maker Drops pilot runs from June 11 through July 16, 2026. Each drop is claimable for four weeks, and the final listed availability ends August 13, 2026. Can you get a free Expansion Pack during a sale or promotion?
Occasionally, EA may run a free giveaway or limited promotion for a smaller item, but that does not make every Expansion Pack free. Promotions have their own expiry dates, platform restrictions, and claiming requirements.

How Expansion Packs work on PC, Mac, and consoles
On PC and Mac, the current official download labels are Download on EA app for Windows and Download on EA app for Mac. Older guides telling you to install Origin are outdated for EA’s current official download pages. You need an EA Account, the EA app or supported platform software, and acceptance of EA’s user terms. On consoles, the in-game Marketplace became available on April 16, 2026. You can still purchase Expansion Packs, Game Packs, and Stuff Packs through the relevant console stores. Kits are no longer available through the PlayStation or Microsoft Stores and are handled through the in-game Marketplace instead.

What about unofficial “free DLC” downloads?
Unofficial copies, cracks, torrents, and modified installers are not legitimate free downloads. They can also expose your EA Account, computer, or console to malware, credential theft, corrupted saves, and software that stops working after an update. They may violate EA’s terms and copyright law depending on your location.
There is no safe workaround that converts a paid Expansion Pack into a free licensed entitlement. Avoid sites that request your EA password, disable antivirus protection, install unknown launchers, complete “human verification” surveys, or promise every Sims 4 DLC pack in one download.

- Compare individual packs with bundles, but check exactly which packs are included before buying.
