How to Download Wordle—and What “Unlimited for Free” Really Means

The NYT Games app includes official Wordle, but a free download does not mean unlimited free puzzles. Here are the independent browser alternatives and what each offers.

You can download the official Wordle through The New York Times Games app, but that does not unlock unlimited official puzzles for free. The app is free to download; NYT says non-subscribers have limited access to games, and its archive puzzles are described as subscriber access. If you want unlimited guesses at new puzzles without installing anything, WordleUnlimited.me says its independent browser game has no daily limit. It is not the official NYT game, and no source establishes free access forever or unlimited offline play.

How to download the official Wordle

  1. Open the Apple App Store or Google Play and search for NYT Games: Wordle & Sudoku from The New York Times Company. Confirm the publisher before installing. The store listings identify Wordle in the app as the official game. Apple App Store listing · Google Play listing

  2. Install and open the app, then choose Wordle from its games. The official game asks you to guess a five-letter word in six tries.

  3. Expect access limits unless your subscription includes NYT Games. The NYT Games help page says non-subscribers and people whose subscriptions do not include Games have limited game access. NYT Games FAQ

The app listings call the app free to download, but that is not the same as unlimited free play. They describe access to archives as a subscriber benefit. Their “over 10,000 past puzzles” figure covers NYT Games archives generally, not Wordle alone.

Which option fits unlimited or past-puzzle play?

Option What it offers Important distinction
NYT Games app Downloadable app with official Wordle; the game is a five-letter guessing game with six tries. Free to download does not mean unlimited official puzzles are free. NYT describes archive access as subscriber access, and non-subscribers have limited game access.
WordleUnlimited.me The service says its browser game has no daily limit and requires no account or download. WordleUnlimited.me It describes itself as an independent, fan-made game and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by The New York Times or Josh Wardle. It is not official NYT Wordle.
WordleArchive.com The archive says players can select past daily puzzles by date or puzzle number, play in any order, and save progress in the browser without an account. WordleArchive.com This is for replaying historical puzzles, not a way to get unlimited new official daily puzzles. The archive says its first puzzle was #0, dated 19 June 2021; that is the operator’s description, not independent verification of completeness.

Can you play Wordle unlimited times for free?

Not by downloading the official app, based on the available access terms. For repeated play without an app install, WordleUnlimited.me claims no daily limit on its own independent browser game. That claim applies to that service, not to the official NYT game. Its site also says it is not connected to The New York Times Company or the original Wordle by Josh Wardle.

Can you play without downloading an app?

Yes. WordleUnlimited.me and WordleArchive.com both describe browser-based play that does not require an app download. Use the former for its service’s unlimited-play claim; use the latter to choose past daily puzzles. WordleArchive.com says it saves progress in the browser without an account. These are separate, independent services rather than official NYT access.

Does “free forever” or offline play apply?

No permanent free-access or unlimited offline-play promise is established by the cited app listings, NYT help page, or independent service. App features, access terms, and websites can change, so treat “free” and “unlimited” as current descriptions of particular services—not a guarantee that access will last forever.
