SEGA’s official lesson is specifically for Classic Amy; use its style cue—gentle and cute, but still spirited—to shape the expression.
Choose which Amy you’re drawing
SEGA’s official Sonic Channel lesson is titled “Let’s draw Classic Amy” and features Sonic Team designer Karasuno. It is a good choice if you want to follow an official video demonstration: SEGA’s Classic Amy lesson. SEGA’s character page separates Classic and Modern character sections, so don’t treat the lesson as a universal guide to every Amy design. The sources here do not provide a detailed comparison of the two versions.
If you prefer written construction steps, EasyDrawingTutorials’ Amy Rose guide recommends beginning with a light pencil sketch and a circular head guide. Its facial placements apply to the view shown in that guide, rather than to every pose.
Draw Amy in beginner-friendly stages
This workflow combines the written guide’s construction approach with SEGA’s style direction. It is a practical synthesis, not a claim that SEGA’s video follows these exact steps.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep the reference visible. If you’re following the official lesson, draw Classic Amy. SEGA’s Amy character profile helps confirm her pink hedgehog identity and Piko Piko Hammer. Its Amy Rose coloring sheet is another official line-art reference for checking pose and silhouette, not a step-by-step lesson.
- Sketch lightly. Use a pencil and smooth, light strokes so you can adjust the early shapes without committing to them. The written guide recommends this approach; it does not prescribe a pencil brand or grade.
- Build the head. Start with a circle. Add curved horizontal and vertical guides to help locate the face. In the view shown by the written guide, the vertical guide sits toward the right side of the circle and the horizontal guide runs low across it. Treat those placements as pose-specific.
- Place the features. Use the curved eye guide to position the eyes, then add a simple mouth and ear shape. Check the reference as you work; the guide’s placements are for its demonstrated view.
- Refine the silhouette and outfit. Compare your sketch with the official reference rather than relying on memory. Amy’s pink hedgehog appearance and large Piko Piko Hammer are useful cues that the drawing reads as Amy.
- Finish the expression. SEGA’s Sonic Channel lesson text describes the aim as “おしとやかで可愛く,” roughly “gentle and cute,” while also recognizing Amy’s spirited, self-directed side. Use that as style guidance, not as a rigid expression formula.
What makes the drawing recognizably Amy?
Two strong cues are her pink hedgehog identity and the Piko Piko Hammer. SEGA’s Sonic Origins manual describes Amy as energetic and ready to join the action, and says she wields her hammer to help her friends. These character traits can guide the pose and expression: a cute face can still feel lively rather than passive.
SEGA’s Classic Amy profile lists her height as 70 cm. That is character-profile information, not a measurement for laying out a drawing, so it does not establish a head-to-body ratio or other drawing proportions.

Which drawing reference should you use?
| Reference | Best for | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| SEGA Sonic Channel video lesson | Video demonstration and Classic Amy fidelity | Official lesson for Classic Amy, taught by Sonic Team designer Karasuno; SEGA’s style prompt is gentle and cute while retaining Amy’s spirited side. |
| EasyDrawingTutorials written guide | Following construction steps at your own pace | Light pencil sketching and early head and face guides for the view shown in the tutorial. |
| SEGA Amy Rose coloring sheet | Checking the overall pose and silhouette | Official line art; it is a reference, not a drawing lesson. |
These sources offer different formats and kinds of reference; they do not establish that one method is more effective than another.
