For routine dust on an assembled LEGO display model, use a clean, dry, very soft brush and light strokes, working from the top down. Support the model at its base or another sturdy section, and avoid pushing on loose details. If pieces need washing, separate them first and follow LEGO’s hand-cleaning guidance: water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), a soft cloth or sponge, and mild detergent only if needed.
Dusting a built LEGO set
Dry dusting is the low-intervention option for an assembled display model. LEGO’s official cleaning instructions cover bricks and pieces, not a specific routine for dusting fragile built models; the soft-brush approach comes from collector guidance.
- Stabilize the model. Move it only if you can support it safely. Hold the base or a sturdy structural area, not a thin appendage.
- Choose a gentle tool. Use a clean, dry, very soft-bristled brush, such as a makeup or artist’s brush. A soft brush is easier to control than forceful air.
- Work from top to bottom. Use short, light strokes to lift dust from surfaces and stud gaps. Avoid scrubbing, which can push parts loose.
- Take extra care around delicate details. Go slowly near clear pieces, stickers, printed elements, clips, antennas, minifigures and loose accessories. If a part feels unstable, leave it in place and dust around it.

When to wash LEGO pieces
Wash only when dust or dirt needs more than dry removal. Take the model apart as needed and clean separated pieces rather than trying to wash a delicate assembled build. Joined elements may not be cleaned effectively, and disassembly also helps keep electronic hardware separate.

Cleaning electronics and sensitive parts
Do not submerge or spray electronic hardware. Unplug sensors and motors from power before cleaning them. LEGO advises wiping electronic components and other sensitive pieces containing metal with a cloth moistened with water and a mild detergent without perfume or oil; use a lightly damp cloth rather than soaking the part. What to avoid
- Heat-based drying: Do not use a hair dryer, oven or microwave. LEGO also advises against dishwashers and washing machines.
- Direct sunlight: Let washed pieces air-dry away from direct sun.
- Harsh cleaners: Avoid bleach and alcohol-based disinfectants as routine cleaning methods. LEGO Education warns they can damage elements, decorations and transparent parts, or cause cracking and crazing.
- Excessive force: Rough brushing or strong air can dislodge pieces and may wear delicate details.
