Producer Kensuke Tanabe says the 100% endings of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force laid groundwork for the Samus–Sylux story that Beyond begins. Nintendo’s premise then picks up with Sylux catching up to Samus: their clash activates an artifact that transports her to the planet Viewros.
What connects Beyond to the earlier Prime games?
The clearest bridge is Sylux, not the Phazon-era conflict that drives much of the first three numbered Prime games. Sylux first appeared among the rival hunters in Metroid Prime Hunters, carrying a grudge against both Samus and the Galactic Federation. Tanabe has described Beyond as the start of the Samus–Sylux story he had wanted to make.
Tanabe said: “I had always wanted to one day turn the story of Samus and Sylux into a game, which I laid the groundwork for in the 100% endings of Prime 3 and Metroid Prime: Federation Force.” The English wording is from Omega Metroid’s translation of an interview published in Nintendo Dream’s March 2026 edition; it is a translated quotation, not the original Japanese text. Where Sylux’s story begins
Hunters introduced Sylux but did not fully explain his history or motives. Tanabe said Nintendo Software Technology’s designers created the hunters’ stories, including Sylux’s grudge against Samus and the Federation. He asked them not to give Sylux a detailed scenario because he hoped to expand the Prime universe and use characters in future games. That left room for later stories to develop the character.

For background, the relevant sequence is Hunters for Sylux’s introduction, followed by the ending teases in Corruption and Federation Force that Tanabe specifically identified as groundwork. Those endings are the particular connective points he named; this does not mean every plotline in those games directly leads into Beyond.
How the Prime trilogy fits
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was presented by Nintendo as the final chapter of the original Prime trilogy. Its central conflict includes Dark Samus and Phazon. The later Samus–Sylux thread is distinct: Tanabe links it across Sylux’s appearance in Hunters and the 100% endings of Corruption and Federation Force.
Keeping those threads separate avoids a common misconception. Beyond is not described in the available Nintendo synopsis as a continuation of the Dark Samus–Phazon conflict. Its clearest stated link to earlier games is the personal conflict between Samus and Sylux. Nintendo’s Prime 3 team interview identified Corruption as the trilogy’s concluding game and discussed Dark Samus as a central theme.

What happens in Beyond
Nintendo’s synopsis says Sylux catches up with Samus. Their confrontation activates a strange artifact, transporting her to Viewros, an unknown planet once inhabited by an ancient civilization. Samus explores the planet and searches for a way home. The new setting introduces the Lamorn, psychic abilities and Sol Valley, a desert region where she can travel using the Vi-O-La.

The first draws on events and characters from earlier games; the second is the immediate adventure Nintendo describes for Beyond. Nintendo’s official game overview covers the premise and setting.
Do you need to play the earlier games first?
The available Nintendo synopsis and product information do not say that earlier games are required to follow Beyond, nor do they explicitly promise that it is fully standalone. The premise is clear without assuming detailed knowledge of every previous plot: Samus encounters Sylux, is transported to Viewros and seeks a way home.

If you want to recognize the older setup, prioritize Hunters for Sylux’s introduction, then look to the 100% endings of Corruption and Federation Force for the specific groundwork Tanabe cites. The first three numbered games also provide the context for the earlier Phazon-era conflict, but that is separate from the main Sylux connection.

What remains unclear
Nintendo’s available official materials do not give a complete authoritative timeline placement for Beyond, settle every spoiler-level plot question or establish that prior games are mandatory. Tanabe’s translated interview supplies the clearest account of how the Samus–Sylux thread was planned; Nintendo’s game overview establishes the new adventure’s premise. Claims beyond those points should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed story detail.
