What makes Buddy Candy arrive faster?
Buddy Candy is tied to walking distance. The important variables you can control are your Buddy’s presence on the Map and its mood. Niantic’s official Buddy Adventure guidance identifies Excited as the mood that reduces the walking distance required to collect a Candy. The same guidance says the Buddy earns Candy at a reduced walking distance while it is on the Map, which requires filling its hunger meter.
That gives you a practical target before a walk: get the Pokémon you want Candy for into Buddy status, feed it until it appears on the Map, and raise its mood to Excited. Keep checking both conditions because hunger and mood decline over time. If either state ends, the benefit described by Niantic may no longer apply until you restore it.

Excited is the key Candy mechanic
Excited is not merely a cosmetic mood. Niantic states: “The walking distance required to collect a Candy will also be reduced while your buddy is Excited.” The statement is qualitative. Official help does not publish a multiplier, a fixed kilometer target, or a universal percentage reduction, so use the mood state as the instruction rather than trying to plan around an unofficial number.
Interactions are the non-item route for raising and maintaining mood. Mood decreases over time, so a Buddy that was Excited earlier may need more attention later. If you are planning a long walk, check the mood immediately before starting and continue interacting when necessary instead of assuming the state lasts indefinitely.
Map presence depends on a full hunger meter
Feed the Buddy until its hunger meter is full and it appears on the Map. Niantic says a Buddy earns Candy at a reduced walking distance while it is on the Map. The hunger meter depletes over time, so the Map state is something you maintain, not a one-time activation.

Step-by-step: a reliable faster-Candy routine
- Choose the Pokémon you want Candy for. Set that Pokémon as your Buddy before you begin the walk. Candy distance applies to the active Buddy, so changing Buddies changes which Pokémon is associated with the walking you do afterward.
- Fill the hunger meter. Feed the Buddy until the meter is full and the Pokémon appears on the Map. This is the condition Niantic associates with the Buddy’s reduced walking-distance behavior. If the meter falls during your session, feed the Buddy again.
- Raise the mood to Excited. Use Buddy interactions to increase mood. Confirm that the mood has reached Excited before you start treating the walk as a faster-Candy session. Continue interacting as the mood declines over time.
- Walk with the Buddy state maintained. Keep the Buddy on the Map and Excited while you cover distance. The official pages do not state an exact reduction, so the meaningful check is whether the Buddy still has the required states, not whether a specific unofficial kilometer figure has been reached.
- Use Adventure Sync if the app will be closed. Enable Adventure Sync and satisfy its requirements before leaving Pokémon GO closed. It can record eligible kilometers outside the open app, but it is a distance-recording feature rather than a separate Candy multiplier.
This sequence separates the tasks that are often confused. Feeding controls hunger and Map presence; interactions control mood; walking supplies distance; Adventure Sync determines whether eligible distance can be recorded with the game closed. A Poffin can combine some of the feeding and mood work, but it does not replace the need to walk.
Ordinary interactions or a Poffin?
Both approaches can lead to an Excited Buddy. The choice is mainly between ongoing attention and an in-game item that makes the setup more convenient.

Because both hunger and mood change over time, it works best when you can interact again during the walk.

When a Poffin is convenient
A Poffin is useful when you want one item to fill the hunger meter and boost mood to Excited. Niantic also says the Buddy stays full, on the Map, and Excited longer after using one. That can reduce the amount of monitoring during a planned walk, but it does not create a published fixed duration you can schedule against.

Poffins are bought in the in-game Shop with PokéCoins. The official help page consulted for this feature does not state the PokéCoin amount, and it does not quantify how much longer the Buddy remains in those states. Treat the purchase as a convenience option rather than a guaranteed number of extra Candies.
Using Adventure Sync when Pokémon GO is closed
Adventure Sync is useful if you want eligible distance recorded without leaving Pokémon GO open. It does not make the Buddy Excited, fill the hunger meter, or provide a separate Candy multiplier. Its role is to record qualifying movement so that distance can be credited when the app is closed.
Requirements listed by Niantic
- Your Trainer level must be 5 or above.
- Location permissions must be enabled.
- Apple Health or Google Fit must be connected, depending on your device.
Enable Adventure Sync in Pokémon GO’s settings, then verify the relevant health or fitness connection and location permission on the device. If any requirement is missing, distance recorded outside the open game may not be eligible.
How to combine it with Buddy Candy
Prepare the Buddy before closing the app: select the correct Pokémon, fill its hunger meter so it is on the Map, and raise its mood to Excited. Adventure Sync can handle eligible distance recording while the app is closed, but it does not preserve a mood or hunger state forever. When you return, check the Buddy rather than assuming that the earlier setup remained unchanged.

Practical plans for different kinds of walks
A short, supervised walk
For a walk during which you can use Pokémon GO, start by feeding the Buddy until it appears on the Map. Raise its mood to Excited through interactions, then begin walking. Watch the hunger and mood states and restore them if they decline. This plan avoids spending PokéCoins and relies on active maintenance.
A long walk with limited phone interaction
A Poffin can be the more convenient setup because Niantic says it fills hunger, raises mood to Excited, and keeps the Buddy full, on the Map, and Excited longer. The duration is not specified, so check the Buddy when practical rather than planning around a claimed number of hours.
A walk where the app stays closed
Turn on Adventure Sync and meet the level, permission, and Apple Health or Google Fit requirements. Prepare the Buddy first, then close the app. Adventure Sync is the relevant feature for recording eligible kilometers in this situation; it does not change the reduced-distance rule associated with an Excited Buddy.

Switching your Candy target
If you need Candy for a different Pokémon, set that Pokémon as the Buddy before beginning the new session. Do not assume that distance walked with a previous Buddy will be reassigned. The Buddy you select is the one for which the Candy distance is relevant.

Troubleshooting: why the faster rate may not be showing
The Buddy is not on the Map
Check the hunger meter. Niantic ties Map presence to feeding, and the meter depletes over time. Feed the Buddy until the meter is full and it appears on the Map again, then continue walking.
The Buddy is on the Map but no longer Excited
Mood decreases over time. Interact with the Buddy again to raise the mood, and confirm that it is Excited before relying on the reduced walking distance. A Poffin can boost mood to Excited and keep the Buddy Excited longer, but its exact duration is not stated by the official help page.
Distance recorded with the app closed is missing
Check all three Adventure Sync requirements: Trainer Level 5 or above, location permissions, and an Apple Health or Google Fit connection. Adventure Sync only covers eligible distance; it is not a guarantee that every movement measurement will become Candy distance.
You are looking for a precise reduction or timer
Niantic’s cited Buddy Adventure wording says the distance is “reduced” while the Buddy is Excited, but it does not give a percentage or exact target. The Poffin help page likewise does not quantify how long the Buddy stays full, on the Map, and Excited. Avoid guides that present an exact multiplier or Poffin duration as an official value unless Niantic updates its documentation.
You are expecting an accessory to speed up Candy
The official mechanics described here identify Buddy state, feeding, mood, walking, Poffins, and Adventure Sync. They do not establish that a particular phone, wearable, shoe, or other physical accessory changes the Candy-distance reduction. Do not spend money on hardware on the assumption that it provides a Candy multiplier.

- Established: an Excited Buddy has a reduced walking distance required to collect a Candy.
- Established: feeding until the hunger meter is full puts the Buddy on the Map, and Niantic describes reduced walking distance while the Buddy is on the Map.

These limits matter when comparing claims online. A precise number can sound useful but is not supported by the official wording available for this mechanic.
