You can earn Mega Energy in Pokémon Go without raids by completing specific research tasks or, occasionally, by walking with a qualifying Buddy. The Buddy route has a prerequisite: a Pokémon in that Buddy’s evolutionary line must have Mega Evolved before. Check your in-game Research tab for tasks that award the Mega Energy you need; Niantic’s general guidance confirms research as a route but does not list which tasks are currently available. Which raid-free methods can give you Mega Energy?
Niantic documents two ways to collect Mega Energy without entering a Mega Raid: complete certain research tasks, or walk with a Buddy that meets the Mega Evolution prerequisite. They work differently: research rewards depend on the tasks currently offered, while Buddy walking is an occasional reward rather than a guaranteed payout at a stated distance. Neither method turns Mega Energy into a universal currency; you need the energy for the Pokémon species, and sometimes the specific Mega form, you intend to use.

The practical difference is certainty versus eligibility. With a research task, the displayed reward tells you what you will receive if you complete that task, but the task may not be available when you need it. With Buddy walking, the route can remain an option once you meet its prerequisite, but the reward is described only as occasional. Niantic does not give a reliable per-kilometre amount in its general collecting guidance, so you cannot use that guidance to calculate how long it will take to reach a particular total.

Before spending time on a task or walking with a Buddy, identify the species whose energy you need. If the Pokémon has separate Mega forms, verify which form you mean as well. A reward or progress for one species—or one form in a dual-form case—does not automatically solve the energy requirement for another.

How to check research tasks for Mega Energy
Research is the most direct option when a task currently offers the exact energy you want. Because task availability and rewards can change, rely on what the game shows you now rather than an old task list. Niantic’s Collecting Mega Energy help page identifies specific research tasks as a source but does not provide a current catalogue.
- Open Pokémon Go and go to the Research tab.
- Review the tasks and their displayed rewards. Look specifically for Mega Energy associated with the species you want to Mega Evolve.
- Complete a task only after confirming that its reward matches your target. A reward for a different species will not solve that species’ Mega Energy requirement.
- After claiming the reward, check the relevant Pokémon’s Mega Evolution screen or the available Mega Energy total to confirm what you received.
Do not assume a task is active just because it appeared in an earlier event, an older guide, or another player’s past account. The useful check is the current reward shown in your own game. Niantic’s general collecting guidance does not establish task names, reward amounts, or how long a particular task will remain available.
This matters especially if you are working toward a first Mega Evolution. A task can be a good route only if it awards the energy you need; a task that rewards another species’ energy may still be useful for a different goal, but it will not contribute to the target you have in mind. Read the reward before completing the task rather than relying on its title or on a remembered event task.

There is no evergreen list of “best” research tasks to follow from Niantic’s general Mega Energy page. The tasks you can actually access in your game are the relevant list, and their availability can change. If you do not see a matching reward, the page does not imply that one is guaranteed to appear immediately. You can instead use the qualifying Buddy route if you have already met its evolutionary-line requirement.
Can you get Mega Energy from walking your Buddy?
Yes, but it is conditional and occasional. Niantic says Buddy walking can award Mega Energy when the Buddy belongs to an evolutionary line that includes a Pokémon you have previously Mega Evolved. The guidance does not promise a fixed amount per walk, a particular distance, or a reward every time you walk. See Niantic’s Buddy and Mega Energy guidance.
Set up the Buddy route
- Choose the species whose Mega Energy you want to collect.
- Check whether you have already Mega Evolved a Pokémon in that species’ evolutionary line. The qualifying prior Mega Evolution is the key condition for Buddy walking.
- Set a Pokémon from that line as your Buddy and walk with it.
- Watch for an occasional Mega Energy reward, but do not plan around a specific yield or distance: Niantic does not state either as guaranteed in its general guidance.
The Buddy does not have to be the exact individual you Mega Evolved; the stated condition is that a Pokémon in its evolutionary line has been Mega Evolved. That makes the route useful after you have established the prerequisite, but it does not make every Buddy eligible. If you have not yet Mega Evolved anything in the line, walking alone is not a documented way to unlock that line’s Mega Energy rewards.

For example, the key check is not simply whether you have ever Mega Evolved any Pokémon in your collection. It is whether a Pokémon in the chosen Buddy’s evolutionary line has Mega Evolved. A prior Mega Evolution in an unrelated line does not satisfy that stated condition. Choose the Buddy based on the energy target, then confirm the line’s prior Mega Evolution before expecting this route to apply.
Walking is therefore better treated as a continuing, low-certainty option than as a fast substitute for a known reward. If you have a matching research task, its displayed reward is easier to plan around. If you already qualify for Buddy walking, you can use that route while accepting that the general guidance offers no guaranteed interval, amount, or walking threshold. Avoid relying on unofficial estimates as though they were a fixed rule.
Does Mega Energy from one Pokémon work for another?
No. Mega Energy is tied to a species, not a shared pool that can be spent on any Pokémon. Energy for one species cannot be transferred to another. Before investing time in a research task or Buddy, match the reward or Buddy line to the Pokémon you actually want to Mega Evolve. This species restriction is explained in Niantic’s collecting guide.
There is an additional distinction for Pokémon with two Mega forms. Charizard’s Mega X and Mega Y forms use separate energy and have separate cost-reduction progress. Mega Evolving Charizard into one form does not establish that you have progressed the other form. If you are collecting Charizard Mega Energy for a specific form, make sure you are following the form-specific requirement described in Niantic’s Mega Evolution guidance.
Think of species and form as two separate checks. First, confirm that the energy belongs to the species you want. Then, in a case such as Charizard, confirm that you are working toward the Mega form you intend to use. The fact that both forms are associated with Charizard does not make their energy or cost-reduction progress interchangeable. This is why “I have Charizard Mega Energy” is not always enough information to know whether you have what you need for a particular form.

Why the first Mega Evolution matters
Mega Energy is most important when an individual Pokémon Mega Evolves for the first time. Each individual needs energy for that initial Mega Evolution—even if you have already Mega Evolved a different Pokémon of the same species. Having enough species-specific energy therefore does not mean every Pokémon in that species is already unlocked.

After an individual Pokémon has Mega Evolved, it enters a rest period. Once that period ends, the same Pokémon can Mega Evolve again without spending Mega Energy. Niantic says the rest period can last up to several days, and repeated Mega Evolutions reduce the energy cost over time. The exact cost varies by species, so there is no single initial amount to use as a general target. Details are in How can I Mega Evolve my Pokémon?
This creates two different collection goals:
- Unlock a particular individual: collect enough energy for that individual’s first Mega Evolution.
- Build toward future use: after it has Mega Evolved, allow its rest period to end and Mega Evolve it again; doing so reduces its later energy cost, and eventually a re-use can be free after the rest period.
The Mega form lasts eight hours before the Pokémon returns to normal, according to Niantic’s Mega Evolution help page. That duration is separate from the rest period governing when an energy-free repeat is available.
These mechanics explain why it helps to distinguish a first-use cost from the cost of reusing a Pokémon. If your plan is to Mega Evolve a second individual of the same species, you still need to meet that second individual’s first-time energy requirement. If you are content to use the Pokémon you already Mega Evolved, waiting for its rest period can let you reuse it without paying energy again. One individual’s history does not remove another individual’s initial cost.
Niantic describes the initial Mega Evolution cost as significant and says costs differ among species. Repeated Mega Evolutions reduce the cost over time, but that does not mean every species starts at the same price or reaches free reuse after the same number of repeats. The useful planning step is to check the cost for the individual and form you intend to Mega Evolve rather than budgeting from another species’ experience.
The eight-hour Mega duration and the rest period answer different questions. Eight hours is how long the Pokémon remains in its Mega form before returning to normal. The rest period is the wait before an already Mega-Evolved individual can Mega Evolve again without spending energy. Do not treat the eight-hour duration as the cooldown length; the rest period can be up to several days.
What Mega Energy does not make free
Energy-free repeat Mega Evolutions do not mean every Mega-related progression step is free. Mega Levels rise as an individual Pokémon is Mega Evolved more often, and its Mega Level does not reset when the Mega form ends. Niantic says reaching Super Max Level requires spending Mega Energy. So the ability to reuse an already Mega-Evolved Pokémon without energy after its rest period should not be confused with the cost of every level or progression step. In other words, free repeat use and Mega Level progression are related but not identical. Repeated Mega Evolutions can increase an individual’s Mega Level and lower its later Mega Evolution cost; the form ending does not erase that level progress. But Super Max Level is a specific exception to any assumption that you can complete all progression without spending energy. If your immediate aim is simply to use an already Mega-Evolved Pokémon again, the rest period matters. If your aim is the highest Mega Level, plan for an energy cost at Super Max Level.

Rayquaza has an additional Mega Evolution requirement: it needs a Meteorite and the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent. Niantic says a Meteorite can be obtained through Special Research. That requirement is separate from collecting Mega Energy; earning energy through research or a qualifying Buddy does not by itself satisfy the Meteorite and move conditions. Check Niantic’s Mega Evolution requirements if Rayquaza is your target.
This is an important distinction if you are collecting for a specific Pokémon: Mega Energy is not necessarily the only requirement for Mega Evolution. For Rayquaza, verify the Meteorite and Dragon Ascent requirements as well as the energy. The Special Research route mentioned for obtaining a Meteorite is not a general Mega Energy farming method, and having a Meteorite does not replace the need for the appropriate Mega Energy.

- You need energy now and see a matching task: complete the research task whose reward explicitly names the target Mega Energy. Its displayed reward is more reliable than an old list of tasks.
- You have already Mega Evolved something in the target line: walk with a Buddy from that line and treat Mega Energy as an occasional bonus.
- You have never Mega Evolved a Pokémon in the target line: Buddy walking does not yet meet the stated prerequisite. Look for an appropriate research reward or another documented route to obtain the initial energy.
- You are targeting a dual-form Pokémon: check whether the desired form has separate energy and progression before collecting; Charizard X and Y do.
- You have already Mega Evolved the individual: consider whether waiting for its rest period and reusing it is more useful than collecting energy for another first Mega Evolution.
A quick decision process can prevent wasted effort. Start with the exact Pokémon and form you want to use. Check whether that individual has Mega Evolved before; if it has not, you need energy for its first Mega Evolution. Then look at the Research tab for a task that names the matching energy. If no matching task is available, ask whether the Buddy prerequisite has already been met for that evolutionary line. If it has, walking is an option, but keep its occasional and unquantified nature in mind.
If the individual has already Mega Evolved, first consider whether you need energy at all for your next use. Once its rest period ends, it can Mega Evolve again without energy. You may still want energy for another individual, a form-specific requirement, or Mega Level progression, but those are distinct goals. Separating them helps you decide whether to pursue a task or walk for energy, or simply wait for an eligible repeat.

Mega Raids are another Mega Energy source, but they are outside these raid-free methods. Niantic notes that Mega Raid energy rewards depend on how quickly the raid boss is defeated; this is a contrast, not a fixed reward rate for the options above. Details appear in Joining Mega Raid Battles.
