For a self-managed installation, the file is normally in the server’s root installation directory. For a hosted server, open the provider’s management panel and use its Files section. Before changing anything, verify which configuration file the server actually loads and whether the panel rewrites settings at startup.

What controls the public details?
The server browser reads the public-facing values from the configuration loaded when the dedicated server starts. The fields relevant to this task are:
| Field | What players see or experience | Stock/default value noted in common configurations |
|---|---|---|
ServerName |
The server title in the browser | My Game Host |
ServerDescription |
The short blurb displayed beside the title | A 7 Days to Die server |
ServerVisibility |
Whether and how the server appears in listings | 2 under the majority interpretation |
ServerPassword |
The password required to join | Blank, meaning no join password |
These entries are separate from gameplay settings. A server can have the right name and description but still be absent from the public browser if its visibility value, loaded file, or host-panel setting is wrong.

Before you edit: identify the active configuration
Self-managed server
On a server you administer directly, look in the root directory of the dedicated-server installation for serverconfig.xml. Do not assume that the first file with that name is the one in use if you launch the server through a script or service.
Check for a custom -configfile argument
Launch scripts can specify another XML file with an argument in this form:
-configfile=<name>.xml
If that argument is present, the server reads the named file instead of the stock configuration. Edit the file named by the argument, not a similarly named default file. A perfectly edited unused file produces no visible change.
Hosted server
Sign in to the provider’s control panel, open the server’s management page, choose the Files tab, and open serverconfig.xml. Some panels expose name, password, and player-limit controls on a Startup tab and write those values into the XML whenever the server starts. In that arrangement, a direct file edit can be replaced automatically. Use the panel control for any field it owns.
Make a backup and stop the process
Download or copy the current XML before changing it. Then stop the server through the panel, service manager, or your normal shutdown command and wait until the process is fully stopped. Editing while the process is running is unreliable because a clean shutdown can rewrite the configuration and overwrite live changes.

How do I change my 7 Days to Die server name?
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the active configuration file: the root-directory file on a self-managed installation, the file selected by
-configfileif a custom argument is used, or the panel’s file manager on a hosted installation. - Find the existing
ServerNameentry. Change only its value to the title you want players to see. Keep the surrounding XML structure, spelling, and quotation marks intact. - Save the file. If your provider exposes a Startup field for the name, save that field instead of—or in addition to—the file, according to the panel’s instructions.
- Start or restart the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Open the in-game browser and search for the new title. A browser refresh or a new search may be needed before the listing cache displays it.
The stock title is My Game Host. Leaving that value unchanged is not an error, but it makes a server difficult to distinguish from others.

- With the server stopped, open the same active XML file used for the name.
- Locate
ServerDescriptionand replace its value with a short, useful description. - Save without changing the XML tags or neighboring properties.
- Restart the server. The description is read at startup, so saving while the server is running does not reliably publish it.
- Check the browser entry beside the server name.
The noted stock description is A 7 Days to Die server. Use the description to tell players what the listing is for, such as a private community or a particular play style, but keep it concise enough for the browser row. If a panel has a dedicated description field, use that field when the provider says it synchronizes the XML.
How do I make my server public?
Public listing is controlled by ServerVisibility. Most configuration references interpret the values this way:
| Value | Majority interpretation | Listing result |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Unlisted | Not shown in the public browser |
1 |
Friends only | Hidden from the public browser; players connect by IP |
2 |
Public | Shown in the public browser |
Under that majority interpretation, set ServerVisibility to 2 to make the server public. The stock/default value is also reported as 2.
Why the values need checking
One 2026 configuration guide assigns the values differently: 0 means not listed, 1 means listed, and 2 means listed with a password. Because those labels conflict, read the comments included in your own serverconfig.xml before choosing a value. The comments shipped with the file are the best indication of what your build expects. If a hosting panel presents named choices rather than numbers, use its Public, Listed, or equivalent option and let the panel write the numeric value.

Changing visibility step by step
- Stop the server.
- Open the configuration file that the launch command or panel actually loads.
- Find
ServerVisibility. - Read the inline comments in that file and select the value labeled for public listing. If the comments follow the majority mapping, this is
2. - Save, then restart the server.
- Search from a client that is not relying on a saved direct-IP entry. Confirm that the server appears in the browser and that its name and description are current.
Some providers lock this field or tell customers not to change it directly. If the control is disabled, use the provider’s visibility setting or support channel rather than forcing a file edit that the panel may reject.
Visibility is not the same as a join password
ServerVisibility determines listing behavior; ServerPassword determines whether a joining player must enter a password. The noted default for ServerPassword is blank, which means the server has no join password. A server can therefore be publicly listed and open, or publicly listed while requiring a password, depending on the visibility interpretation in the file and the password value.
To add or remove a password, stop the server, edit the existing ServerPassword value, save, and restart. On a hosted service that exposes a Startup password field, change it there so the panel does not restore the previous value at the next launch. Tell intended players the new password through your normal private channel; do not put it in the public description.
Hosted-panel workflow versus direct file editing
| Situation | Preferred method | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed installation with no custom launch argument | Edit the root-directory serverconfig.xml while stopped, then restart |
Editing a different copy or saving malformed XML |
Self-managed installation with -configfile |
Edit the file named by the launch argument | Changing the stock file that is never loaded |
| Hosted panel with a Files tab only | Stop the server, edit serverconfig.xml, save, restart |
The panel may overwrite values at startup |
| Hosted panel with Startup controls | Use the panel’s name, description, password, or visibility controls | Direct edits being replaced on the next start |
| Panel with a locked visibility setting | Use the available listing option or ask the host to change it | Conflicting panel and XML values |
The reliable distinction is ownership: whichever interface writes the value at startup must be treated as authoritative. A panel-managed field should be changed in the panel; a self-managed field should be changed in the active XML.
Restart and verify the result
- Save the file or panel form while the server is stopped.
- Start the server and wait for the normal ready state.
- Search the browser for the exact new name.
- Open the listing and check the description.
- Test joining with the expected password state.
- If the server should be public, verify it from a client that is not connected through a previously saved direct IP.
Name and visibility changes do not appear in the browser until the server is running again. If the listing is cached, close and reopen the browser or repeat the search after the restart.

Troubleshooting: 7 Days to Die server not showing in browser
The server is running but absent from the list
- Confirm that the active file’s
ServerVisibilitycomments identify the value you selected as public or listed. - Check that you did not leave the server at the unlisted value.
- Check for the friends-only setting. A friends-only server is hidden from the public browser and requires players to connect by IP.
- Verify that the server was restarted after saving.
- Look at the launch command for
-configfileand confirm that you edited that named file. - If the server is hosted, check whether a Startup setting rewrote visibility when the process launched.
- If the panel locks visibility, use its own listing control rather than editing a field it manages.
The old name or description returns after every restart
This usually indicates that the wrong file was edited or that the host regenerates the value. Recheck the launch argument, then inspect the Startup tab for a name or description field. Change the owner of the setting, stop the server, save once, and restart again.
The file saves but the server will not start
Restore the backup and start the server to confirm that the problem came from the edit. XML is unforgiving: an accidentally removed tag, quote, or closing character can prevent the configuration from loading. Reapply the change to the existing property without reformatting unrelated lines. If the panel has a built-in editor with validation, use it.
The field is missing
Do not add an arbitrary property name or copy a line from an unrelated version. First confirm that you opened the active file and that the panel is not presenting a reduced configuration view. The documented version change affecting V3.0 removed several difficulty, loot, experience, day-length, airdrop, and zombie settings as separate lines; that change does not remove the name, description, or visibility fields. Missing gameplay lines therefore do not by themselves explain a missing public-detail field.
The description appears truncated or unchanged
Confirm that the saved value is in ServerDescription, not ServerName, and restart again. Check the browser after a fresh search rather than relying on an old cached row. If only the description fails while the name changes, inspect whether the host panel has a separate description control that overwrites the XML.
Version and configuration-file cautions
Guides written for older releases may show many more gameplay properties than a current file. A host notes that, since V3.0, several difficulty, loot, XP, day-length, airdrop, and zombie settings are no longer represented as separate lines in serverconfig.xml. That does not change the procedure for ServerName, ServerDescription, ServerVisibility, or ServerPassword; it does mean that copying an entire old template can introduce settings your build does not use.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Keep the file supplied with your server version, edit the existing public-detail entries, and preserve its comments. Those comments are particularly important for visibility because published guides do not all use the same numeric labels.
Safe-edit checklist
- Identify whether the server is self-managed or controlled by a hosting panel.
- Find the actual file loaded at startup.
- Check the launch command for
-configfile. - Back up the current configuration.
- Stop the server fully before editing.
- Change only the existing public-detail values.
- Use the panel for fields that it rewrites or locks.
- Confirm the visibility labels in your file’s own comments.
- Save, restart, and verify the listing from the browser.
- Keep a known-good backup in case the server fails to load the edited XML.
