To edit a website’s index.html with FileZilla, connect to the server, find the file in the Remote site pane, right-click it and choose View/Edit (or Edit). FileZilla opens a local copy in an external text editor. Save your changes, then accept FileZilla’s prompt to upload the modified file. The homepage changes only after the edited file reaches the correct remote web directory.

Before you start
You need FileZilla Client, the connection details provided by your hosting provider, and a text editor that can edit HTML. FileZilla transfers files; it does not itself provide the text-editing workspace for this process. Its View/Edit action downloads a temporary local copy and opens that copy in an associated editor.

- Connection details: the server host, username, password or key, and protocol. Use the port specified by your provider if one is supplied.
- A suitable editor: a text editor, not a web browser. If View/Edit launches a browser, change FileZilla’s editor setting before editing.
- A backup: download the existing
index.htmlbefore changing it. Keep that original copy somewhere separate so you can restore it if the edited page causes a problem.
Choose the connection method
Use the connection method your hosting provider supports and specifies. The protocols differ in how they protect the session:

FTP commonly uses port 21 and SFTP commonly uses port 22, but these are defaults, not a substitute for your host’s connection instructions. FTPS settings can also vary. If FileZilla cannot connect, confirm the protocol and port with the provider rather than repeatedly trying credentials under a different protocol.

Edit and upload index.html
- Connect to the server. Enter the host, username, password or key, and protocol supplied by your provider. Wait for the Remote site pane to populate.
- Find the website’s document root. In the Remote site pane, navigate to the directory that serves the site’s files. Hosting layouts vary:
public_htmlis one example, not a universal location. Use your provider’s documentation to identify the correct web root. - Locate the current homepage file. Look for
index.htmlin the document root or the appropriate site directory. Before editing, download this existing file as a backup. - Open the remote file for editing. Right-click
index.htmlin the Remote site pane and choose View/Edit or Edit. FileZilla downloads a local working copy and opens it using the configured editor. - Make the change in the text editor. Edit the local copy and save it. Do not treat a browser preview as an editable source file; the file needs to open in a text editor so you can modify its HTML.
- Upload the saved copy. When FileZilla detects the saved change, it should ask whether to upload the modified file. Accept the prompt and let the transfer finish.
- Check the live page. Refresh the website and confirm the expected change. If it is not visible, verify that the transfer completed and that you edited the file in the directory actually serving the site.
Set or fix the editor FileZilla uses
If View/Edit opens Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser, FileZilla is using a browser association for the file instead of a text editor. Set an editor intended for editing text, then open the remote file again.
- In FileZilla, open Edit > Settings > File editing.
- Select the system default editor if your operating system already associates HTML files with the text editor you want.
- Otherwise, select Use custom editor and browse to the text editor’s executable.
- Apply the setting, return to the Remote site pane, and try View/Edit again.
FileZilla Pro also documents file-type associations; in that setup, %f represents the file path. For the basic workflow, choosing the system default editor or configuring a custom editor is sufficient.

Upload if FileZilla does not show a prompt
The automatic prompt depends on FileZilla watching locally edited files. If no prompt appears after saving, you can enable that behavior in FileZilla’s file-editing settings, or upload the edited file manually.
Option 1: Enable the watched-file prompt
Open Edit > Settings > File editing and enable Watch locally edited files and prompt to upload modifications. After saving a file opened through View/Edit, FileZilla can then prompt you to upload the modification.

Option 2: Use Manual Transfer
- Open Transfer > Manual Transfer.
- Choose Upload.
- Select the saved local
index.htmland specify its destination path on the server. - Start the transfer and check the queue or status area for completion.
For a manual upload, take care to select the intended local copy and the correct remote destination. Uploading to a different directory can succeed as a transfer while leaving the live homepage unchanged.
Confirm the file reached the live site
Use FileZilla’s transfer queue and status area to confirm the upload completed. Then refresh the page in a browser. If the page still looks unchanged, inspect the page source or browser console and check these details:

- Remote destination: confirm the upload went to the site’s actual document root, not merely a similarly named folder.
- Filename and capitalization: confirm the uploaded filename is exactly
index.html. Filename case can matter on the server. - Transfer result: confirm the queue did not leave the upload failed or incomplete.
- Edited copy: confirm you saved the same local file that FileZilla prompted you to upload, or that you selected the right file in Manual Transfer.
Troubleshooting connection and editing problems
FileZilla cannot connect
Check the host, protocol, port, username, password or key, and whether your account is authorized to connect. The standard default ports are 21 for FTP and 22 for SFTP, but your provider’s settings take precedence. A correct password will not resolve a mismatch between the protocol selected in FileZilla and the one configured for the server.
View/Edit opens a browser
Change the editor under Edit > Settings > File editing. Choose the system default text editor or set a custom editor, then retry View/Edit.

Saving does not trigger an upload prompt
Enable Watch locally edited files and prompt to upload modifications in File editing settings. If you prefer not to use the watched-file prompt, upload the saved copy through Transfer > Manual Transfer.
The uploaded file does not change the homepage
Check the remote directory and filename first. The correct directory depends on the hosting setup; public_html is an example used by some hosts, not a rule for every account. Confirm the file was uploaded as index.html with the expected capitalization, then refresh the live page.
The page breaks after editing
Restore the backup you downloaded before editing by uploading that original file to the same remote path as the changed file. Confirm the replacement transfer completes, then refresh the site. Keeping a separate backup makes this rollback possible even if the edited copy is unusable.
What FileZilla’s View/Edit workflow does—and does not do
View/Edit is a transfer-and-edit workflow, not direct editing of the server’s file in place. FileZilla downloads a local copy, opens it in an external editor, and needs to upload the changed copy after you save it. The file becomes the site’s homepage only if that upload lands in the correct document root under the expected filename.
The dependable sequence is therefore: identify the right web root, save a backup, open the remote file through View/Edit, save in a text editor, upload the modification, and verify the completed transfer and live page.
