On your PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and turn on 120 Hz Output. This enables a compatible display signal; it does not force every game to run at 120 frames per second. You also need a game with a 120 Hz mode and a screen and HDMI connection that support the output.
Turn on 120 Hz Output
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic or turn it on, depending on the menu label shown. Sony describes the setting as enabling 120 Hz video output for TVs and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. PlayStation Support’s resolution guide explains the setting.
- Start a game that supports a high-frame-rate mode and check its graphics, display, or video settings for a 120 Hz, high-frame-rate, or performance option. The exact label and availability depend on the game.
If enabling 120 Hz Output causes a blank screen or other video-output problem, Sony advises turning it off.
Why the setting does not guarantee 120 FPS
Hertz (Hz) describes how often the display can refresh its image; frames per second (FPS) describes how many frames the game renders each second. The console setting enables a 120 Hz signal when the TV and game support it. The game itself must offer a suitable mode, and the display and HDMI signal path must accept the output.
Some games also offer a system-level preset. Under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets, you can choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode where supported. Sony describes Performance Mode as favoring smoother motion and Resolution Mode as favoring higher graphic quality. These presets apply only to games that offer them; they are not a universal 120 FPS switch. See PlayStation Support’s guide to customizing game presets.

- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check whether your display and connection are compatible
The TV or monitor must support the output you want. Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 specifications and 4K 120 Hz video output, but the display must support that mode too. On some TVs, only particular HDMI ports support the required signal, or a relevant HDMI mode must be enabled in the TV’s own settings. Consult the display manual and check for current firmware.
For 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting, Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A new cable is not automatically necessary if the included one works. Connect the console directly to the display while troubleshooting, since an AV receiver or another device between them can affect the signal. See PlayStation Support’s picture and sound troubleshooting guide.

Troubleshoot a missing 120 Hz option or blank screen
- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports the specific output you want, such as 4K at 120 Hz, and check its firmware.
- Try the display’s appropriate HDMI port and consult its manual for any setting that enables the required HDMI mode.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the display to rule out an AV receiver or other intermediary.
- For the 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting path, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Avoid Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 if your priority is 4K/120 Hz: Sony says both limit 4K 120 Hz output. They may help reduce flickering by lowering the output, but that trades away the mode you are trying to use.
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check Current Video Output Signal and Information for the Connected HDMI Device to see what the setup reports for resolution, VRR, and HDR. If you use a 1440p display, Sony says the PS5 can test compatible displays for SDR/HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz and for VRR output.
