On Ubuntu, enable Apache sessions with sudo a2enmod session, then enable the companion module that will store the session—usually session_cookie (and optionally session_crypto), or session_dbd for database-backed storage. Add Session On and the appropriate directives in the virtual host or directory that serves your application, run sudo apache2ctl configtest, and reload Apache.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
mod_session supplies the session interface; it does not, by itself, choose where session data is stored. Cookie, encryption and DBD behavior come from separate modules. Treat the storage decision as a security and deployment choice, not merely an installation step.

What mod_session does in Apache 2.4
mod_session is Apache HTTP Server’s server-wide, per-user session interface. Apache has provided it since the 2.3 development series, and it is designed to be loaded dynamically as a module. A session is represented as key/value data encoded as an application/x-www-form-urlencoded string.
The base module provides the session mechanism and directives such as Session, SessionMaxAge, SessionEnv and SessionHeader. It does not automatically persist a session in a browser or a database. You must load a storage companion:

| Module | Role | Where session contents reside | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
session |
Core session interface and common directives | Not a store by itself | Required foundation |
session_cookie |
Stores the session in an HTTP cookie | Client browser | Little server-side state and simple multi-server operation, but the client receives the contents |
session_crypto |
Encrypts cookie-based session data | Client browser, encrypted | Reduces exposure of readable contents while retaining cookie storage |
session_dbd |
Stores sessions through Apache’s database-dependent framework | Server or shared database | Better control over data exposure, with database and resource requirements |
These modules are separate on purpose. Enabling only session makes the Session directive available, but it does not make SessionCookieName work and does not create a database-backed store.
Before enabling anything: check the active Apache installation
Run the checks as the same Ubuntu administrator who will change the service:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsapache2ctl -V
apache2ctl -M
apache2ctl -V displays the build and compiled-in paths, which helps identify the installation whose configuration you are editing. apache2ctl -M lists modules currently loaded by the running configuration. At this point you are looking for an existing session_module, session_cookie_module, session_crypto_module or session_dbd_module entry. The exact list varies with the Ubuntu package and the modules you have already enabled.
If Apache is not installed, install or repair Ubuntu’s apache2 package first. The package supplies the a2enmod utility used by the supported Ubuntu enablement path.
Enable the base module and choose a storage companion
Enable mod_session
Ubuntu’s supported command for enabling a named Apache module is:
sudo a2enmod session
The command creates or activates the module’s configuration link in Ubuntu’s Apache configuration layout. It does not normally reload the service for you, so configuration changes take effect only after a successful reload.
Choose browser-cookie sessions
For a session carried by the browser, enable the cookie companion:
sudo a2enmod session_cookie
If the cookie must contain encrypted session data, enable the crypto companion as well:

sudo a2enmod session_crypto
Cookie storage minimizes server-side session state and can make a group of Apache servers easier to operate without a shared session database. Its cost is that session contents are sent to the client. Encryption changes the confidentiality trade-off, but it does not turn a cookie into server-side storage; the browser still carries the encrypted value on each request.
Choose database-backed sessions
For server-side or shared storage, enable the DBD session module:
sudo a2enmod session_dbd
You must also configure mod_dbd and its database provider for your chosen backend. The database connection, schema and provider settings are separate from the mod_session enablement command and depend on the database driver in use. Do not treat session_dbd as a complete database configuration.
DBD storage keeps session contents on the server or in a shared database, which can limit what the browser can inspect. It adds a database dependency, connection management and server resource consumption. For a multi-server deployment, the database must be reachable and consistently configured by every participating Apache instance.
Configure a basic cookie session
Place session directives in the virtual host, directory or permitted .htaccess context that applies to the application. A minimal documented cookie configuration is:
Session On
SessionCookieName session path=/
Session On is essential because the directive defaults to Off. SessionCookieName session path=/ names the cookie session and scopes it to the site root. If you put these lines in a virtual host, only requests handled by that virtual host inherit them; placing them in a narrower directory limits the scope further.

The SessionCookieName directive belongs to mod_session_cookie. If Apache reports an error for that directive, confirm that session_cookie is enabled rather than assuming the base module failed.
Add an expiry policy when sessions should not be indefinite
Use SessionMaxAge to control session lifetime. A value of zero disables expiry. Select a non-zero age when an abandoned browser session should eventually stop being accepted, and document the unit and policy in your application configuration so operators know when users will be signed out.

Do not infer an expiry policy from the cookie’s name alone. The effective behavior comes from the Apache directive and the storage module handling the session.
Expose the session to an application
Apache can pass the session to an application in two documented ways. To provide a CGI variable named HTTP_SESSION, enable:
SessionEnv On
Alternatively, use SessionHeader to define a header-based exchange with the application. Choose one integration path that matches how your application server receives request metadata. A session can be enabled and stored correctly yet remain invisible to an application that has not requested either environment or header integration.
Configure encrypted browser sessions
Encrypted cookie sessions use the same cookie storage model, with session_crypto added to protect the cookie value. Enable both companions:
sudo a2enmod session_cookie
sudo a2enmod session_crypto
Keep the cookie naming and scope in the applicable configuration:
Session On
SessionCookieName session path=/
The encryption module addresses readable session contents in the browser; it does not remove other cookie risks. Apache warns that its session modules use HTTP cookies and can therefore be vulnerable to cross-site scripting attacks or expose potentially private information to clients. Protect the application against XSS and review what data is placed in a session before deciding that encryption alone is sufficient.

Cookie flags and browser behavior
Cookie attributes such as httponly and secure can be configured with the session cookie directives. secure is appropriate when the application is served over HTTPS, while httponly prevents ordinary client-side scripts from reading the cookie in browsers that honor the flag. Apache cautions that browser support and privacy behavior are not guaranteed uniformly, so test the result with the browsers and proxies your users actually employ.
Configure server-side sessions with DBD
DBD storage is the alternative when session contents should stay on the server or in a shared database. The enablement sequence is:

The exact connection-string syntax and table setup are backend-specific; Apache’s generic session module does not supply one universal database recipe. Verify the provider documentation for your Ubuntu package and database before putting credentials into a production configuration.
DBD storage is generally a better fit when the session contains information that should not be exposed to a browser, or when several Apache servers must see the same state. It is less attractive for a small single-server site that wants to avoid operating a database solely for sessions.

After enabling modules and editing the appropriate context, validate the complete Apache configuration before touching the live workers:
sudo apache2ctl configtest
A successful check normally prints Syntax OK. A failed check identifies a file and line number; fix that error before reloading. Syntax validation catches malformed directives and missing modules, but it does not prove that an application is receiving the session or that a database is reachable.
Once the test succeeds, reload Apache so workers read the changed module and configuration state:
sudo systemctl reload apache2
A reload applies the new configuration without the full interruption of a stop-and-start cycle. If the reload fails, inspect the service status and systemd journal before attempting further application tests.
Recommended Free Tools
Confirm that the expected modules are loaded:
apache2ctl -M | grep session
Then make a request to the affected virtual host and inspect the response and subsequent request in your application or HTTP client. For a cookie configuration, the operational result is a session cookie with the configured name and path. For an environment or header integration, verify that the application receives the value through the channel you selected.

| Question | Cookie storage | DBD/server-side storage |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the session data? | In the browser’s cookie | On the server or in a database |
| Does the browser receive the contents? | Yes; encryption can protect readability | No session contents need to be sent to the browser |
| Server resource use | Less server-side state, but data travels with requests | Database connections and storage are required |
| Multiple Apache servers | Easy to share state without a central session store | Requires a shared, consistently reachable database |
| Primary operational risk | Cookie exposure, size and browser handling | Database availability, credentials and connection configuration |
| Typical choice | Small or stateless deployments where client-carried state is acceptable | Applications needing server-held contents or coordinated state across servers |
Neither option is universally safer. A cookie session reduces infrastructure but makes the client part of the storage path. A DBD session keeps data under server control but creates another service that must be secured, monitored and available during requests.

Common errors and recovery steps
a2enmod: command not found
The utility is supplied by Ubuntu’s apache2 package. Install or repair that package, then rerun the enablement command. Also confirm that the shell is running on the Ubuntu host where Apache is installed; invoking the command on a separate container or minimal system will not modify the target server.
Invalid command 'Session'
This means Apache parsed a Session directive without the module that defines it. Run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →apache2ctl -M | grep session
If the base module is absent, run sudo a2enmod session, execute sudo apache2ctl configtest, and reload Apache. Make sure you edited the configuration belonging to the active installation identified by apache2ctl -V.
Cookie directive is unknown or rejected
SessionCookieName is provided by session_cookie, not by the base module. Enable it with sudo a2enmod session_cookie, test the configuration, and reload. If the directive is inside a context that does not permit it, move it to the applicable virtual host or directory context allowed by your Apache configuration.
Configuration changes appear to have no effect
- Run
sudo apache2ctl configtestand correct every reported error. - Reload with
sudo systemctl reload apache2. - Check
apache2ctl -Mfor the module you intended to load. - Confirm that the request reaches the virtual host where the directives were placed.
- Inspect the systemd journal for the Apache service if the reload or startup was rejected.
- Test a new request and examine the cookie, environment variable or header expected by the application.
A successful syntax check proves only that Apache accepted the configuration grammar. It does not establish that the request selected the intended virtual host, that a database provider can connect, or that the application reads the chosen integration channel.
Sessions work on one server but not across several
Cookie sessions can move between servers because the browser carries the value, provided all servers use compatible session settings and keys. DBD sessions require every server to use the same reachable database and compatible schema and configuration. If one node has only the base module or a different companion module enabled, behavior will diverge even though the load balancer is functioning.

Lower-level loading with LoadModule
Ubuntu’s a2enmod command is the supported convenience layer for its packaged Apache layout. Apache also supports the lower-level LoadModule mechanism in server configuration. Hand-editing LoadModule lines is normally unnecessary on Ubuntu and can conflict with the package’s enabled-module links, so use it only when you deliberately manage Apache’s configuration outside the standard Ubuntu layout. Regardless of how a module is loaded, the same companion-module distinction remains: the base session interface does not provide cookie or DBD storage by itself.
Recommended enablement sequence
For most Ubuntu Apache 2.4 installations that need a browser cookie, use this concise sequence:
sudo a2enmod session
sudo a2enmod session_cookie
sudo apache2ctl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
apache2ctl -M | grep session
Then place the following in the target virtual host or directory and test an actual application request:
Session On
SessionCookieName session path=/
Add sudo a2enmod session_crypto before the validation step when the cookie value must be encrypted. Replace the cookie companion with sudo a2enmod session_dbd and complete the separate mod_dbd configuration when sessions belong in a server-side database.
