Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter a Sims 4 update, check that the game runs with Mods disabled, exit without saving, confirm each mod works with the current update, then turn it back on at Game Options > Other > Enable Custom Content and Mods. Exit and relaunch the game for the setting to take effect. These steps apply to PC and Mac; EA says Mods are not available on PlayStation or Xbox.
Why custom content may turn off after an update
EA disables Mods during updates as a precaution: a mod that worked before a patch can cause problems afterward. Compatibility depends on both the individual mod and the game update, so do not assume every file in your Mods folder is safe just because the game launches. Check the creator’s current compatibility guidance. EA’s guidance on Mods and game updates explains the update behavior.
Safely re-enable custom content and Mods
- Start the game with Mods disabled. Load or resume a game and check whether it works normally. Custom Content will not appear during this check.
- Exit without saving. In Live Mode, open the top-right Menu, choose Exit Game, then confirm Exit Game again. Do not choose Save and Exit before enabling Mods: EA warns that content may be removed from the saved game.
- Check the mod creator’s update notes. Confirm that each mod you plan to use works with the latest Sims 4 update. If the creator has posted a compatible version, follow their instructions for replacing the old files. Some updates may take time, and a mod may need to be fully reinstalled.
- Turn the setting back on. From the main menu, open Game Options > Other and select Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Exit and relaunch the game. Check that the mod works after restart. If it causes problems, remove it and check the creator’s page for an updated version.
EA’s exact menu path and restart guidance are in its post-update Mods instructions.
Custom Content and gameplay Mods are both covered
EA uses “Mods” as an umbrella term for player-made additions. Custom Content includes things such as clothing, hair, and objects; gameplay Mods can change features or add functionality. The toggle is named Enable Custom Content and Mods, and it covers both categories.

If a mod still causes trouble
- Remove the problem mod and check the creator’s site for a compatible update; do not assume an older file will work with the latest patch.
- When reporting the issue, include the game version shown in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu.
- Keep in mind that EA says it does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content. Compatibility and creator support come from the mod’s maker, not an EA approval process.
