Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn a desktop, open a new Chrome tab, select Customize Chrome in the lower-right corner, open Appearance, and choose Dark. Choose Device instead if Chrome should follow your computer’s current light or dark theme. Google uses the name Dark theme for Android and Dark mode for iOS; the available controls and terminology differ by platform.
What Chrome’s dark mode changes
Chrome’s built-in appearance setting changes Chrome-owned interface areas rather than forcing every webpage into a dark color scheme. Google says that, when you browse in Dark mode or Dark theme, your homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages will be dark. A site’s own design remains the site’s responsibility, so a dark Chrome frame does not guarantee that the article, game page, forum, or web app inside it will also use dark colors.

This distinction matters when you are checking whether the setting worked. Look at Chrome’s new-tab page, toolbar, and settings screens, not just the page currently open. A website that stays white is not, by itself, evidence that Chrome’s setting failed.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Open a new tab. The customization control is on the new-tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Appearance.
- Select Dark.
Chrome applies the dark appearance to the browser areas covered by the setting. The same Appearance panel also contains Light and Device, so you can change the choice later without repeating any system configuration.
If you want Chrome to follow your computer
Select Device in the Appearance panel. This tells Chrome to inherit the computer’s current theme instead of permanently choosing one browser theme. When the computer is set to a light appearance, Chrome follows light; when the computer is set to a dark appearance, Chrome follows dark.
For this option to behave as expected, turn on dark mode in the operating system first, then open Chrome. Google’s guidance covers the computer’s Mac, Windows, or Chromebook settings at the operating-system level; the exact location of that control is outside Chrome’s new-tab menu.
Choose the right appearance option
| Chrome choice | Behavior | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Dark | Chrome always uses its dark theme. | You want a dark browser interface regardless of the computer’s current theme. |
| Light | Chrome uses its light theme. | You want the standard light browser interface. |
| Device | Chrome inherits the operating system’s theme. | You want Chrome to switch with the computer’s appearance setting. |
These choices affect Chrome’s own appearance. They are not three controls for recoloring individual websites. If a particular site has its own dark-theme switch, that control is separate from Chrome’s Appearance setting.

How to tell whether dark mode is active
After choosing Dark, inspect several Chrome-owned surfaces:
- Open a new tab and check the page background and browser controls.
- Open Chrome’s settings and check whether the interface is dark.
- Look at the toolbar and other browser chrome around a webpage.
Google’s description is deliberately limited to the homepage, toolbar, settings, and “some other pages.” That wording means the dark treatment is not a promise that every Chrome screen or every part of every page will use the same colors.
A dark webpage is not proof of the setting
A website may provide its own dark design, and Chrome can also look dark for reasons unrelated to the normal appearance selection. Test with a new tab and Chrome’s settings so you are evaluating the browser interface itself.

Incognito windows
Chrome may appear dark in Incognito mode. Therefore, seeing a dark-looking Incognito window does not prove that the regular Chrome appearance is set to Dark. To check the normal setting, use a standard browsing window, open a new tab, and inspect Customize Chrome → Appearance.

The computer’s theme is controlling Chrome
If Device is selected, Chrome follows the operating system. A change in the computer’s Mac, Windows, or Chromebook theme can therefore change Chrome’s appearance without a new browser theme being selected. Check both places: first the Chrome Appearance choice, then the computer’s own appearance setting.
Troubleshoot a desktop setup that does not look right
The Customize Chrome button is missing
Make sure you are on a new-tab page rather than an already loaded website. Google’s desktop path begins with a new tab, and the Customize Chrome control is located in the lower-right corner of that page. Once the control is visible, open Appearance and check the three choices.
Dark is selected, but a site is still white
Check Chrome’s own new-tab page, toolbar, and settings first. Google promises dark treatment for those browser areas and some other pages, not for every site’s content. A white website can be behaving normally while Chrome itself is correctly using Dark mode.

Check whether Device is selected. That choice intentionally inherits the computer’s theme, so changes made in Mac, Windows, or Chromebook appearance settings can be reflected by Chrome. If you want one fixed browser appearance, return to Customize Chrome → Appearance and choose Dark or Light instead.

Only an Incognito window is dark
Compare it with a regular window. Incognito can look dark independently of the normal appearance selection. In a standard window, open a new tab and verify the selected option under Customize Chrome → Appearance.
Some Chrome pages do not match
Google’s wording covers the homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages, rather than every interface surface. If those named areas are dark but another page is not, that difference is within the stated scope of the feature. It does not necessarily indicate a faulty installation or a missed step.

Device is useful when your computer’s theme is the source of truth. Set the desired dark or light appearance in the computer’s Mac, Windows, or Chromebook settings, then open Chrome. In Chrome, confirm that Device is selected under Customize Chrome → Appearance.

This arrangement separates responsibilities: the operating system decides the current device theme, while Chrome follows it. If you later select Dark or Light in Chrome, the browser no longer depends on that system choice because you have selected a fixed Chrome theme.

Android and iOS: terminology and scope
Android
Google calls Chrome’s feature Dark theme on Android devices. The official desktop instructions above do not establish an Android menu path, so do not assume that the desktop Customize Chrome control appears in the same place on a phone or tablet. Use the Chrome and Android help for the version of the device you are configuring, and look for the label Dark theme.
iPhone and iPad
Google calls the feature Dark mode on iOS. As with Android, the desktop new-tab procedure is not a mobile procedure. The available controls can differ between iOS and desktop Chrome, so follow the iOS-specific Chrome guidance rather than applying the desktop clicks literally.
On both mobile platforms, the name of the feature does not change the important limitation: a browser-level dark setting is not a guarantee that every website will recolor its own content. Check the relevant platform documentation for the current control path and then evaluate Chrome’s interface separately from a site’s design.
A practical decision guide
Choose Dark for a fixed browser theme
Use Dark when you want Chrome to remain dark even if the computer switches to a light theme. This is the direct, permanent choice in the desktop Appearance panel.
Choose Device for synchronized changes
Use Device when Chrome should match the computer. This avoids maintaining a separate browser preference, but it means a system-theme change can also change Chrome.
Choose Light when you want the standard light interface
Use Light when you do not want Chrome’s dark appearance. It is available alongside Dark and Device in the same desktop panel.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Use a standard desktop Chrome window, not only Incognito, when verifying the setting.
- Start from a new-tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark, Light, or Device.
- Check Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, and settings rather than judging by one website.
- If Device is selected, check the computer’s Mac, Windows, or Chromebook theme as well.
