How to Enable DLSS and Choose a Quality Mode in Supported PC Games

Turn on DLSS in a supported game's graphics settings, then choose a mode based on image quality, performance needs, game, resolution, and GPU.

To enable DLSS, open a supported PC game’s graphics or display settings, turn on its DLSS upscaling option, and choose a mode. Start with Quality if image detail matters most; try Balanced or Performance if you want more performance headroom. The best choice depends on the game, output resolution, GPU, and your preferences.

How to enable DLSS

  1. Check support for the feature you want. A game may support DLSS Super Resolution but not every other DLSS feature, and hardware compatibility varies by feature. Check the game’s current support information and NVIDIA’s DLSS feature and hardware table.
  2. Open the game’s graphics or display settings. Look for DLSS under upscaling, anti-aliasing, or image-quality controls. Menu names and locations differ by game and may change with updates.
  3. Enable the DLSS option the game provides. Select the specific feature if the game lists multiple DLSS options; enabling Super Resolution is not the same as enabling Frame Generation or another feature.
  4. Choose a quality mode and apply the change. Begin with Quality if you prioritize image detail, or try a more performance-oriented mode if you need additional headroom.
  5. Compare in the game. Check the same scene at the same output resolution when comparing modes, and judge both image quality and performance.

NVIDIA says DLSS is normally enabled in a game’s own settings, and the available controls depend on the game’s engine and update level. Its driver guide to DLSS settings explains that menus and options can vary between titles.

What DLSS Super Resolution does

DLSS Super Resolution uses lower-resolution input, motion data, and feedback from earlier frames to reconstruct an image at a higher output resolution. NVIDIA describes it this way: “DLSS samples multiple lower-resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from prior frames to construct high-quality images.” Read more on NVIDIA’s DLSS technology page.

Which DLSS quality mode should you use?

Modes trade the game’s input rendering resolution against the output resolution DLSS reconstructs. A lower input resolution can provide more performance headroom, but it gives DLSS less source detail to work with. NVIDIA’s documented examples for DLSS Super Resolution overrides are:

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Mode NVIDIA’s documented input-resolution example When to try it
Quality 67% of output resolution When preserving image detail is the priority.
Performance 50% of output resolution When you want more performance headroom and can accept a more aggressive upscale.
Ultra Performance 33% of output resolution When pursuing a substantial performance boost is more important than fine image detail.
Custom scaling Selectable from 33% to 100% When a compatible override offers a custom input scale.
Balanced not stated in NVIDIA’s cited override guidance Try the option if your game offers it; its exact behavior depends on the title.

These percentages are NVIDIA’s examples for its documented override behavior, not a guarantee that every game renders every mode identically. Check the options exposed by the particular title. There is no universal best mode: compare image detail and performance at your own output resolution, using the same scene when possible.

Can the NVIDIA App change DLSS settings?

In compatible games, the NVIDIA App can apply per-game DLSS overrides. Go to Graphics > Program Settings > Driver Settings to find the available controls for a selected game. NVIDIA describes overrides for DLSS models and modes, but compatibility varies, and some controls require the related feature to be switched on in the game’s settings first. See NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App DLSS override guidance.

NVIDIA also describes the app as a way to update supported games with newer DLSS features and AI models. That does not mean every override is available in every game or on every GPU; check the app’s per-game controls and the game’s own options.

Which GPUs support DLSS?

Compatibility depends on the DLSS feature, not just whether a game says “DLSS supported.” NVIDIA lists DLSS Super Resolution for GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series GPUs; other features, including Frame Generation and newer Multi Frame Generation options, are limited to particular generations. Use the feature-by-feature rows in NVIDIA’s DLSS hardware table to check your GPU. A new graphics card is not automatically required to change a game’s settings; first confirm support for the specific feature you want.
