How to Enable Dolby Atmos on an Astro A50: Xbox and PC Setup

Dolby Atmos setup on an Astro A50 depends on the headset generation and platform. Follow the Xbox or Windows steps, check license eligibility, and use PS5 3D audio instead of the Atmos for Headphones path.

To use Dolby Atmos for Headphones with an Astro A50, activate it in Dolby Access, then select it in your Xbox or Windows audio settings. The exact steps and whether the headset includes a license depend on the A50 generation and platform. On PS5, use the console’s 3D-audio settings instead; the A50 X does not follow the Xbox/PC Dolby Atmos for Headphones setup on PlayStation.

Identify your A50 model before changing audio settings

Check the headset packaging, model information, base station, and its mode controls. An illuminated Dolby indicator or an EQ preset does not by itself confirm that Dolby Atmos for Headphones is active.

The current A50 Gen 5 and A50 X documentation identifies supported Xbox and Windows use, not a blanket entitlement for every A50 ever made or every platform edition. Dolby Access may offer a trial or purchase if it does not recognize an included license. Dolby describes headset activation options at Dolby Gaming.

What Dolby Atmos for Headphones changes

Dolby Atmos for Headphones is software-based spatial audio configured through Dolby Access and the platform’s audio settings. It is distinct from older A50 hardware Dolby processing, the headset’s ASTRO/Pro/Studio or custom EQ presets, and Dolby Atmos for Home Theater. The last option is for a compatible HDMI-connected TV, soundbar, or receiver—not the A50 headset output.

Logitech G Astro A50 Multi-Platform Wireless Gaming Headset - Black
  • PLAYSYNC AUDIO 3-System Switching: The A50 wireless gaming headset with mic connects to 3 platforms at once via USB-C so you can tap between Xbox, PS5, PC/Mac or Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 via on-ear control
  • PRO-G GRAPHENE Audio Drivers: Groundbreaking clarity and response for precise audio separation, location and timing accuracy (40mm diameter with live edge technology)
  • 24-bit LIGHTSPEED Wireless: This wireless headset with mic offers uncompressed, immersive gaming audio at lightspeed
  • Broadcast-Quality Mic: Experience maximum articulation with the 48 kHz full-bandwidth boom mic that achieves new levels in voice quality
  • Bluetooth Dual-Device Mixing: Connect to your mobile device and mix your Discord comms or music into your game audio

Atmos uses spatial rendering to place sounds around the listener; it does not turn headphones into discrete physical speakers, and it cannot guarantee better positional cues in every game. The game’s mix and personal preference matter. If you compare it with Windows Sonic or stereo, change one spatial-processing setting at a time rather than stacking virtual surround effects.

Prepare the headset and platform

  • Power the headset and base station, connect the base station to the console or PC, and set its mode to the platform you are using. Newer models use PLAYSYNC controls; older bases may have a physical mode switch.
  • For an A50 X Xbox setup, connect both HDMI and USB to the Xbox as Logitech recommends. For other current A50 Xbox setups, connect the base station by USB. Do not assume an optical cable is needed.
  • Install Dolby Access from the Xbox Store or Microsoft Store and launch it while signed into the Microsoft account used for the platform.
  • Use current device software where the model supports updates through Logitech G software. Logitech says its older Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained; it is not a universal fix.

Xbox Series X|S does not provide the optical-audio path found on older Xbox consoles. Older A50 Gen 4 instructions showing optical wiring apply to those model-and-console combinations, not as a universal current setup. Microsoft documents the platform spatial-sound options and optical limitation at Windows spatial sound.

Enable Atmos on Xbox

  1. Connect and select Xbox mode. Connect the base station to the Xbox by USB; for A50 X, also connect HDMI. Put the base station or headset in Xbox mode, power the headset, and dock it while beginning setup.
  2. Install and open Dolby Access. Find Dolby Access in the Xbox Store, install it, launch it, and follow any activation prompts. Eligible newer A50 licenses should be recognized by the app.
  3. Set the headset format. On Xbox, open Settings > General > Volume & audio output > Headset audio > Headset format and choose Dolby Atmos for Headphones.
  4. Undock and assign the headset. Turn on and undock the headset. Wait for the Xbox headset-assigned notification; the console needs to recognize the headset for the audio route to work.
  5. Verify activation. Reopen Dolby Access and check that its Dolby Atmos for Headphones entry shows ready (Logitech describes a green check). Also confirm Xbox still displays Dolby Atmos for Headphones as the headset format.

The separate Speaker audio setting controls sound sent to a TV or speakers, not the headset format. Logitech’s no-audio recovery sequence mentions setting speaker audio to Dolby Atmos for Home Theater or Uncompressed where appropriate; that does not mean Home Theater is required to enable Atmos in the A50. Logitech’s Xbox no-audio instructions provide the full recovery sequence.

Mute speaker audio when headset attached is an optional behavior if you want the TV or speakers muted while using the headset. It is not an Atmos prerequisite.

Enable Atmos on a Windows 10 or 11 PC

  1. Choose the A50 playback device. Open Settings > System > Sound > Output and select A50 Game on newer models. Older devices may use a label such as ASTRO A50 Game.
  2. Set spatial audio for that output. Open the selected output device’s properties and find Spatial Audio. Choose Dolby Atmos for Headphones. Depending on the Windows build and how the device appears, the setting may be in the sound-device properties or the classic speaker control panel.
  3. Finish Dolby Access setup. Open Dolby Access, choose the A50 output if prompted, and complete activation. If the headset has an eligible included license, the app should recognize it; otherwise it may offer a trial or purchase option.
  4. Choose the microphone input. Under Settings > System > Sound > Input, select A50 Mic Out on newer models. Older models may show ASTRO A50 Voice.
  5. Route chat only if needed. Newer models may expose separate game, voice, and stream endpoints. A chat app can use the voice endpoint if you want to use the headset’s game/voice balance controls. This routing is optional and does not activate Atmos.

Logitech’s current guide lists Windows Sonic for Headphones and Dolby Atmos for Headphones as spatial-audio options for the A50 Game output. See the A50 guide for endpoint and setup details.

Use the A50 with a PS5

Do not follow the Xbox/PC Dolby Access activation steps expecting Dolby Atmos for Headphones to be the A50’s PS5 mode. Logitech identifies headphone Atmos support for Xbox and Windows PC; its A50 X PlayStation troubleshooting instead directs users to set the console audio format to LPCM. Select the A50 as the PS5 USB audio output and configure the console’s own 3D-audio feature where supported. PS5 3D audio and Dolby Atmos for Headphones are separate platform implementations.

Logitech also says DTS formats are unsupported in the cited A50 X PlayStation case. If audio passes to the TV but disappears when switching to the headset, use LPCM rather than Dolby Atmos or DTS. Logitech’s PlayStation audio-format guidance.

Troubleshoot missing Atmos or audio

Symptom Checks and fix
“Dolby Atmos for Headphones” is missing Launch Dolby Access once and complete setup; confirm the headset is powered, undocked, selected as the output, and in Xbox or PC mode. Check USB and power, then confirm the exact model is eligible or that a trial/purchase was activated. Restart the app and device if the option remains absent.
Xbox has no sound after selecting Atmos Use Logitech’s sequence: dock the headset, confirm base-station USB, launch Dolby Access and exit it, set speaker audio to Dolby Atmos for Home Theater or Uncompressed as appropriate, select Dolby Atmos for Headphones under headset audio, power on and undock, then wait for the headset-assigned notice. Reopen Dolby Access to check readiness.
Dolby Access asks for payment Verify the model and platform edition, Microsoft account, and device connection. Current Gen 5 and A50 X documentation says the supported license is hardware-bound; an unrecognized entitlement may reflect the wrong edition, account, or device recognition. If the exact model is not eligible, Dolby Access offers a trial or purchase route. Dolby confirms trial and one-time purchase options at Dolby’s headphone setup page.
Atmos works, but game/voice balance does not On PC, send game audio to A50 Game and chat to A50 Voice or the model’s equivalent, with the A50 mic endpoint selected. Separate routing and balance behavior vary by model and platform.
TV audio disappears or switches incorrectly Check whether the headset is docked, undocked, or powered off; confirm the selected mode. On A50 X Xbox installations, verify both HDMI and USB. On PS5, set the A50 X audio format to LPCM for the cited troubleshooting case.
Advice says to use optical or ASTRO Command Center Check that the instructions match your A50 generation and console. Older guides can show Xbox One optical wiring; current Xbox Series setups use USB, with A50 X using HDMI plus USB for the recommended configuration. Do not use the discontinued Firmware Update Tool as a universal fix.

Choose between Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic

Windows Sonic is Microsoft’s built-in spatial-audio alternative, while Atmos uses Dolby’s renderer and Dolby Access. Windows Sonic is a useful no-additional-purchase comparison on supported Windows and Xbox setups. If Sonic works but Atmos does not, focus on Dolby Access activation, license recognition, or output-device selection rather than assuming the headset itself has failed. Neither renderer is guaranteed to sound better in every game; compare with the same game and output level, then keep the setting you prefer. Microsoft documents spatial audio options.
