What Is Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows—and Should You Turn It On?

HAGS shifts much of GPU scheduling work to the GPU, but it is not a guaranteed FPS boost. Here is when to leave it on, troubleshoot it, and test it fairly.

Short answer: If Windows offers Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) and your PC is stable, leave it on. It changes how Windows and the GPU divide up scheduling work; it does not make the graphics card render faster by itself, so FPS and latency gains are not guaranteed. Turn it off if you can reproduce crashes, stutter, display-driver problems, or worse frame pacing with it enabled.

What Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling does

HAGS is a Windows graphics-stack setting that moves much of the frequent work involved in scheduling GPU tasks from the CPU and Windows kernel to a scheduling processor or hardware-managed path on the GPU. Windows still sets high-level priorities; the GPU-side scheduler handles routine work such as context switching and managing execution time.

Think of it as changing who handles the routine traffic control, not adding lanes to the road. The graphics card does not gain shader cores, video memory, or bandwidth. Microsoft introduced HAGS as an optional feature with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update and described it as a driver-model change and foundation for future graphics features—not a guaranteed FPS boost. Microsoft’s technical explanation of HAGS notes that many applications already hide scheduling costs through buffering, so the visible effect may be small or absent.

What difference should you expect in games?

There is no universal performance result. Reducing CPU work related to GPU scheduling may help in a particular configuration, but it does not remove the common limits on game performance: GPU rendering capacity, CPU game-thread speed, VRAM, asset streaming, shader compilation, thermal limits, or the game’s own frame pacing.

  • Average FPS: It may rise slightly, fall slightly, or stay effectively the same. A PCWorld test found mixed results, including a decrease in a V-Ray GPU workload; that is evidence against treating HAGS as a universal boost, not a prediction for every game. PCWorld’s HAGS testing
  • 1% lows and frame pacing: These can matter more than the average when a game feels uneven. Compare frame-time graphs and repeated runs rather than relying on a single FPS number.
  • Input latency: HAGS may affect scheduling overhead, but it is not a dedicated low-latency mode. Game queues, V-Sync, frame caps, VRR, GPU utilization, monitor refresh, and features such as NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag also affect the result. HAGS cannot reduce network latency.
  • CPU use and battery: HAGS can reduce CPU work associated with scheduling, but Microsoft gives no universal CPU-saving figure. That does not establish a meaningful battery-life improvement; lower scheduling work does not automatically mean lower whole-system power draw.
  • Stability: A system that runs more reliably with one setting may be better for that user even if its average FPS is unchanged. Results can depend on the driver, Windows build, game, and capture or VR software.

Should you turn it on?

Leave it on for a stable, supported gaming PC

If the switch is available and you are not seeing a problem, enabled is a sensible default. Do not change it just because an optimization guide promises a large gain, because you own a high-refresh monitor, or because the setting sounds more advanced. It is also reasonable to leave it alone if you do not have a graphics issue to solve.

Turn it off to troubleshoot a reproducible problem

Test with HAGS disabled if crashes, stutter, freezes, black screens, driver resets, VR instability, or capture and encoding trouble began after a graphics-driver, Windows, or game update. Also turn it off if a repeatable comparison shows worse frame times or stability. A single improvement or regression does not prove that HAGS caused it; another update or a noisy benchmark may be responsible.

Do not upgrade a GPU just to get HAGS

HAGS alone is not a sound reason to replace a graphics card or PC. Consider an upgrade only if the current system is inadequate for your games, VRAM needs, creation workload, or another specific feature—not for a scheduling toggle.

Check support and change the setting

HAGS is available only when Windows detects suitable GPU hardware and a driver that exposes support. Microsoft’s original documentation described the feature in the context of WDDM 2.7. The exact menu labels vary by Windows release, and not every Windows 10 installation has the option.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Select Change default graphics settings.
  3. Find Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and switch it on or off.
  4. Restart Windows before assessing the change, even if no restart prompt appears.

Microsoft documents the Graphics settings area in its Windows 11 graphics and windowed-game settings guide.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select Graphics settings, then open the advanced or default graphics settings area if needed.
  3. Switch Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on or off, then restart Windows.

Windows 10 menu wording and nesting vary by release. If the path does not match, search Settings for Graphics settings. Microsoft’s original HAGS announcement describes the earlier Windows 10 path.

If the toggle is missing

A missing switch usually means Windows does not see a supported combination of GPU hardware and display driver. It can also reflect an older Windows build, an OEM laptop driver limitation, or an unusual virtualized or remote graphics setup. The presence of integrated graphics does not guarantee support. Microsoft says the control appears when the GPU and driver support HAGS; do not use a registry edit to force it.

  1. Run Windows Update and install available updates.
  2. Install a current graphics driver from the GPU maker or, on a laptop, the computer maker. For a laptop-specific problem, the manufacturer’s validated driver may be the safer choice.
  3. Restart, then check Device Manager > Display adapters to confirm which GPU Windows detects.
  4. Reopen Graphics settings. If the switch is still absent, treat HAGS as unavailable on that configuration.

HAGS is not the same as other graphics settings

Several nearby Windows and vendor controls address different parts of the graphics pipeline. HAGS is a system-level scheduling setting; it is not a routine per-game toggle in Windows’ normal Graphics interface. Windows separately offers per-app GPU preferences and controls such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate. Microsoft’s overview of the redesigned Graphics settings page describes those separate controls.

  • Per-app GPU preference: Chooses which GPU an application should use on systems with multiple GPUs. It does not select a different scheduler for that app.
  • Optimizations for windowed games: A separate Windows 11 feature for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. See Microsoft’s windowed-game settings guide.
  • NVIDIA Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag: Separate latency technologies; HAGS does not replace them.
  • VRR and frame caps: Affect how frame output meets the display’s refresh behavior or a chosen rate limit. HAGS does not substitute for either.
  • DLSS, FSR, XeSS, frame generation, and Auto HDR: These address image reconstruction, generated frames, or image presentation—not the same scheduling work.
  • Windows Game Mode: A separate Windows gaming control, not another name for HAGS.

Do not assume HAGS is required for all frame generation. Requirements can vary by vendor feature, game, GPU generation, and driver. If a specific game or feature says it needs HAGS, enable it and confirm that feature works in that implementation.

Test HAGS fairly

A useful comparison isolates the setting instead of comparing unrelated runs. Restart after each change, keep the same game version and graphics setup, and test the games you actually play.

  1. Record whether HAGS is currently on or off.
  2. Keep the game version, driver, resolution, preset, frame cap, display mode, and other graphics options the same.
  3. Change HAGS and restart Windows.
  4. Run the same built-in benchmark or repeatable scene at least three times.
  5. Compare average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time graphs, and perceived stutter. Also note crashes or driver resets during a meaningful play session.
  6. Repeat the process with the other HAGS setting, changing no other major variable.

A one-run difference of a few frames may be ordinary measurement noise. If average FPS improves but the game feels less responsive, inspect frame caps, V-Sync, VRR, Reflex or Anti-Lag, frame generation, and GPU utilization before crediting HAGS.

Special cases: laptops, VR, streaming, and virtual machines

Hybrid-graphics laptops

A laptop may contain both integrated and discrete GPUs. HAGS does not choose which GPU runs a game; use Windows’ separate per-app GPU preference for that. Laptop manufacturers may validate drivers on a different schedule from generic GPU-driver releases.

VR and streaming

VR depends on the headset runtime, reprojection, capture tools, and driver behavior as well as the game. Streaming and recording add encoder, overlay, browser, and capture-software activity. Neither VR users nor streamers should assume HAGS will improve performance: compare on the actual headset or capture setup and keep the more stable configuration.

Remote desktops and virtual machines

Virtualized and remote graphics environments can expose different driver capabilities from a physical gaming PC. Microsoft documents distinct GPU paravirtualization behavior for virtual machines; physical-PC advice should not automatically be applied to a VM. Microsoft’s GPU paravirtualization documentation

If enabling HAGS makes things worse

  1. Return to the same Graphics settings page, switch HAGS off, and restart.
  2. Try the game or workload that showed the problem again under the same conditions.
  3. If the problem persists, roll back or clean-install the graphics driver, then check the game’s graphics API, frame-generation, VRR, and latency settings.
  4. Re-enable HAGS only after the application and driver are stable, and only if you want to retest it.

If disabling HAGS fixes a crash on your PC, treat that as a configuration-specific compatibility result, not proof that the feature is defective for everyone. A Windows, game, or driver update can change the outcome.
