DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream—but YouTube warns it may be limited or unavailable on broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so do not assume viewers can rewind an entire 24/7 stream.
Turn on DVR in YouTube Live Control Room
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, click Create → Go live.
- Choose the stream: Enter the stream details or select the scheduled broadcast you want to change.
- Open its settings: In the left menu, choose Stream or Manage, then open Stream settings on the stream dashboard. Labels can vary slightly depending on the workflow.
- Enable DVR: Under Additional settings, switch on Enable DVR.
YouTube documents this setting path in its Live Control Room DVR instructions. You do not need to buy or configure an encoder just to change the DVR setting.
What viewers can do with DVR
When DVR is available, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live broadcast. Resuming continues from the point where they paused. They cannot seek to a moment before the live stream began. DVR is therefore a way to control playback during the broadcast, not a way to browse an unlimited archive.
What changes on a 24/7 stream
Rewind may be limited after 12 hours
YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older versions of the YouTube app can have lower rewind limits. YouTube does not promise a specific rewind window for a continuous 24/7 broadcast, so the setting does not guarantee that viewers can rewind the full broadcast. Check playback on the devices and app versions your audience uses.

You can change DVR while live
YouTube allows creators to change the DVR setting during a broadcast. The change applies to viewers who start watching after it is made; YouTube does not promise that it will take effect immediately for people already watching. If you need DVR enabled from the beginning, turn it on before going live.
Disabling DVR does not disable every replay
Turning DVR off prevents viewers from seeking backward during the live broadcast. They may still be able to watch the full recording after the stream ends if a recording is available. YouTube says disabling DVR is not supported for webcam and mobile streams.

DVR and the saved replay are separate settings
DVR controls pausing and rewinding while the stream is live. Archiving controls whether a replay is saved after the broadcast ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not rely on the YouTube replay as the only recording; YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup. See its guidance on live stream archives.
Encoder setup, latency, and DVR
An encoder sends the video feed to YouTube; it is not the DVR switch. For an encoder-based stream, YouTube’s workflow is to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room, copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder, start sending the feed, verify the preview, and then go live. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions also note that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

YouTube describes encoders as useful for productions such as gameplay with overlays or connected hardware, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. But expensive equipment is not required to get started, and no encoder purchase is required to enable DVR. YouTube’s live streaming tips explain the production options.
Latency is another separate setting. It is the delay between the encoder or camera capturing an event and that event appearing to viewers. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; latency does not determine whether DVR is enabled. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
