How to Enable EPUB Support in Microsoft Edge (and the Working Alternatives in 2026)

Short answer: You cannot restore a native EPUB reader in the current Chromium-based Microsoft Edge through Settings, edge://flags, or a supported policy. Microsoft says Edge no longer supports .epub ebooks and directs readers to EPUB applications instead. To keep using Edge, install a vetted EPUB extension; for dependable offline reading, use a desktop reader such as Thorium Reader.

Microsoft’s current EPUB guidance is the authoritative status for Windows and the current Edge generation.

What changed: Edge Legacy had an EPUB reader, Chromium Edge does not

The confusion comes from two different browsers sharing the Edge name. The older Windows 10 browser, usually called Edge Legacy, used Microsoft’s EdgeHTML engine and included a built-in EPUB reader. Microsoft later replaced it with the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. The current browser does not include that former EPUB component.

Microsoft’s support page now states that Edge no longer supports ebooks with the .epub extension and tells users to download an EPUB application. The page also points to applications identified with help from the DAISY Consortium, which is relevant if accessibility features matter. This is a product decision, not a hidden setting that has been disabled on your computer.

  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.

Current Edge’s built-in document support is focused on formats such as PDF. Microsoft documents the PDF viewer separately at Microsoft Edge PDF documentation; those PDF controls do not add EPUB handling.

Can Settings or edge://flags turn EPUB back on?

No supported method exists. Searching Settings for “EPUB,” changing download behavior, or adjusting PDF preferences cannot register an EPUB engine. The same applies to edge://flags: there is no current, Microsoft-supported EPUB switch for stable Edge.

Older forum posts mention the command-line feature flag --enable-features=msEdgeEPUBReaderEnabled. Community reports tied that switch to particular historical builds, while later reports say the behavior disappeared. The discussions at one historical report and a later follow-up are version-specific and contradictory. They do not establish a working solution for current stable Edge in 2026.

Do not downgrade Edge, disable browser updates, or create a permanent shortcut with that switch just to recover EPUB support. An experimental flag can vanish after an update, launch a separate unsupported browser configuration, or expose you to an unmaintained code path. Treat the switch as historical information only, not as a repair procedure.

Fastest way to read an EPUB while staying in Edge: use an extension

For an occasional, DRM-free book, an EPUB extension is the lowest-friction replacement. The Microsoft Edge Add-ons EPUB search page currently lists multiple choices, including ePub Reader, Beautiful Epub Reader, EPUBReader, ePub Viewer, and Elysian EPUB Reader. Listings, permissions, ratings, and maintenance status can change, so evaluate the specific product page rather than assuming that every extension behaves alike.

Install and open an extension

  1. Open Microsoft Edge on your desktop computer.
  2. Go to Microsoft Edge Add-ons and search for EPUB reader.
  3. Open a candidate listing and check its publisher, requested permissions, privacy information, recent reviews, and update history.
  4. Select Get or Add to Edge, then confirm the installation prompt.
  5. Open the extension from the puzzle-piece Extensions menu or pin its icon to the toolbar.
  6. Use the extension’s own import control, file picker, or drag-and-drop area to load the book.

The listing for Leonardo Compson’s ePub Reader says that an online EPUB can be opened from its context menu and that a local EPUB can be dragged into the extension popup. Those are listing-specific instructions; another extension may use a different workflow.

Allow an extension to see local files when required

An extension may be able to open a web-hosted EPUB but still fail with a file on your disk. The browser treats a local book as a file:/// URL and blocks extension access unless you grant it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter edge://extensions in the address bar.
  2. Find the EPUB extension and select Details.
  3. Turn on Allow access to file URLs if that option is offered.
  4. Close and reopen the extension, then drag the EPUB into its reader or use its file picker.

Beautiful Epub Reader documents this requirement on its Add-ons listing. Grant the permission only to an extension you trust: it can potentially read files you open through local URLs. Recheck permissions after extension updates, and remove the extension when you no longer need it.

Why an extension is not the same as native support

Extensions bundle their own rendering engines and vary in support for EPUB 2, EPUB 3, reflowable layouts, fixed-layout books, embedded fonts, JavaScript, audio, video, and complex navigation. A simple novel may work perfectly while a textbook, comic, or interactive publication does not. Ratings are not a substitute for checking the extension’s permissions and testing a representative, DRM-free file.

More dependable local reading: Thorium Reader

If you read regularly, a dedicated application avoids browser-extension permissions and popup workflows. Thorium Reader is a free, open-source desktop reader with downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its project pages describe EPUB 3 support, selection, annotations, classification, accessibility features, offline reading, and support for certain protected publications:

The listed minimum requirements include Windows 10 or later and macOS Monterey or later, with supported Linux distributions documented by the project. A crawl of the site displayed version 3.4.0; check the download page for the current build before installing because release numbers and operating-system requirements change.

Install Thorium and associate EPUB files

  1. Download the installer for your operating system from the official Thorium site.
  2. Install it using your platform’s normal application installer.
  3. Launch Thorium once so it can create its library and accessibility settings.
  4. Open an EPUB with Open with and select Thorium. On Windows, enable Always use this app to open .epub files if you want future double-clicks to go directly to Thorium.
  5. Keep Edge for web reading and use Thorium for local books, annotations, and files you do not want to expose to a browser extension.

Thorium is a better fit when you need offline privacy, keyboard navigation, accessibility tooling, or EPUB 3 features. It is a separate application rather than a browser tab, and it does not provide the cloud synchronization of a reading service.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Microsoft Store EPUB applications

Microsoft’s support guidance points readers toward EPUB applications in the Microsoft Store. The store provides separate lists for free Books & Reference apps and paid Books & Reference apps. The free list has included Thorium Reader, Aquile Reader, Freda, and EpubReader for Windows; paid listings have included KDL Reader and AZW Reader for ePub, mobi ebooks.

Store availability, regional pricing, permissions, and in-app purchases can change. Before installing, check the current product page, supported Windows version, file formats, DRM statements, and whether the app stores books locally or uploads them. A Store app is convenient if you want Microsoft’s installation and update channel, but it is not automatically more compatible than a reputable standalone reader.

Cloud reading and synchronization: BookFusion

A cloud reader makes sense when you want reading progress, highlights, and bookmarks to follow you between desktop, Android, and iOS. BookFusion supports EPUB and other ebook formats and advertises synchronization and cloud storage. Its pricing page says uploaded ebooks must be DRM-free.

Prices visible on the official page on August 16, 2026 were:

Plan Price shown Relevant limit or feature
Free $0 Up to 10 books and a 15 MB maximum file size
Casual $2.99 Paid tier with larger storage and additional features
Advanced $7.99 Paid tier with broader storage and features
Power $14.99 Highest listed tier with the broadest allowances

The same page displayed monthly prices of $0, $1.99, $4.99, and $9.99 for those tiers and advertised a 20% saving with yearly billing. These are prices seen on August 16, 2026, not guaranteed future rates; verify current terms at BookFusion’s pricing page.

BookFusion is a poor fit if you require local-only storage, do not want an account, or have books protected by DRM. Uploading a DRM-protected file will not make it readable in the service.

DRM-protected and library EPUBs need the provider’s reader

Not every file ending in EPUB is an ordinary, unprotected book. Library and bookstore downloads may use Adobe DRM, Readium LCP, or another licensing system. A generic Edge extension may show an error, an empty book, or a download that appears to be an EPUB but cannot be opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the application specified by the lending library, bookstore, or publisher. Follow its sign-in, authorization, and expiration instructions rather than trying to remove protection. Thorium advertises support for certain LCP-protected publications, while BookFusion’s pricing page explicitly requires DRM-free uploads. Neither statement means that either application opens every protected title.

An .acsm file is especially important: it is generally a license or download instruction for an authorized DRM workflow, not the book itself. Open it with the software named by the library or retailer. Renaming .acsm to .epub will not convert it and can make troubleshooting harder.

Troubleshooting when an EPUB will not open

Edge downloads the file instead of displaying it

This is expected when no native EPUB handler or compatible extension is registered. PDF download settings cannot change that behavior. Install an EPUB extension and load the file through its interface, or open the file with Thorium or another dedicated application. Setting Edge as the default browser does not make it an EPUB reader.

The extension cannot see a local EPUB

  1. Confirm the filename really ends in .epub; it may actually be .zip, .acsm, or a file with a hidden second extension.
  2. Visit edge://extensions, choose the extension’s Details, and enable Allow access to file URLs when available.
  3. Drag the file into the extension popup instead of double-clicking it.
  4. Try a known, DRM-free online EPUB. If that opens, the original file or its DRM is the likely cause.
  5. Open the same file in Thorium. A failure there as well points to file corruption, an unsupported feature, or DRM.

The book is DRM-protected

Stop testing random extensions and identify the issuing library, retailer, or DRM system. Obtain the provider’s approved application and follow its authorization steps. Do not attempt to bypass encryption or licensing controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The EPUB renders with missing fonts, broken pages, or no media

Rendering engines differ. Try the file in a dedicated EPUB 3 reader, then check whether the publication uses fixed-layout pages, embedded fonts, scripts, audio, or video. An extension designed for reflowable novels may not implement those features. If the book is supplied by a publisher or school, ask which reader they support.

  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.

Read aloud does not work

Edge’s Reading mode and Immersive Reader are designed for supported webpages, not arbitrary EPUB files. Microsoft documents Immersive Reader at this support page and Reading mode at its feature page. Use the EPUB application’s own text-to-speech or accessibility controls instead.

An administrator blocks the extension

On a school or work device, policy can prevent extension installation or limit which extension and app types are allowed. Microsoft documents those controls at ExtensionAllowedTypes policy documentation. An administrator can permit an approved extension, but policy cannot recreate a native EPUB engine that Edge no longer ships with. Ask your administrator for an approved reader rather than attempting to work around the restriction.

Which replacement fits your reading needs?

Need Best fit Main trade-off
Quick reading inside Edge Edge EPUB extension Permissions, rendering quality, and update support vary
Local privacy and offline reading Thorium Reader Requires a separate desktop application
Accessibility and EPUB 3 features Thorium Reader More specialized than a browser tab
Reading progress across devices BookFusion Requires an account; storage and advanced features depend on the plan
DRM-protected library ebooks Reader specified by the library or bookstore Compatibility depends on the DRM system
Simple Windows Store installation A Microsoft Store EPUB app Quality, pricing, and feature sets vary by app and region

Platform notes: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS

On Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop systems, the practical choices are an Edge Add-ons extension, a standalone application such as Thorium, or a web service such as BookFusion. File-association controls are provided by the operating system, not by an Edge EPUB setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edge’s mobile editions on Android and iOS do not provide the former native EPUB reader. Extension availability and behavior on mobile differ from desktop and can be constrained by the platform. For a phone or tablet, use the EPUB app recommended by your library or store, a mobile reader that imports DRM-free files, or a synchronized service when cloud access is acceptable.

Security and privacy checklist before installing any reader

  • Download desktop software from its official project or store listing.
  • For an extension, inspect publisher identity, permissions, privacy disclosures, ratings, and recent updates.
  • Grant local-file access only when necessary and only to software you trust.
  • Keep confidential documents in a local reader rather than uploading them to a cloud service.
  • Check DRM requirements before importing a library or bookstore title.
  • Remove unused extensions and revoke their local-file access.

Bottom line

There is no supported way to enable the old built-in EPUB reader in current Microsoft Edge. The historical msEdgeEPUBReaderEnabled flag is not a dependable fix, and Reading mode is not an EPUB viewer. Install an Edge extension for occasional DRM-free books, choose Thorium Reader for private and accessible offline reading, use a Microsoft Store app if you prefer Store distribution, or choose BookFusion when synchronized multi-device reading matters. For DRM-protected books, follow the library or retailer’s officially supported reader.
