How to enable HDR on a Steam Deck OLED and check whether a game supports it

The Steam Deck OLED already has an HDR-capable built-in screen, so handheld HDR does not require a separate system-wide switch documented by Valve. To check a game, open its Steam library details and look for the HDR badge, then confirm an HDR option in the game’s display or graphics menu. When the Deck is connected to a television or monitor, HDR is a separate external-display setting that appears only when SteamOS detects a supporting display.

What HDR means on the Steam Deck OLED

Valve specifies the Steam Deck OLED’s internal panel as a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display. The technical specification lists peak HDR brightness of 1,000 nits. That means the handheld screen itself is designed to show HDR content; you do not need to buy a monitor or dock to use HDR while playing in handheld mode.

There are two different HDR paths:

  • Handheld HDR: HDR is rendered on the Deck OLED’s own panel. Valve’s published material does not identify a separate global toggle that must be enabled first.
  • External HDR: HDR is sent through USB-C video output to a compatible television or monitor. SteamOS exposes a display-level HDR control only when the connected display supports it.

These paths should not be treated as interchangeable. A game can have HDR output support but still behave differently on the internal panel and an external screen, and the external path adds the display, cable, dock or adapter, input, resolution and refresh-rate settings to the troubleshooting chain.

How to check whether a Steam game supports HDR

1. Look for the HDR badge in Steam

From the Steam library, open the game’s details page. Valve added an HDR badge to app details for games marked as having HDR output in the SteamOS 3.5.5 update, published November 16, 2023. The badge is the fastest first check because it lets you identify marked titles before launching them.

A missing badge does not prove that a game can never display HDR. Valve’s badge identifies games marked as having HDR output; it is not a complete compatibility database and it does not account for every game update, display path or configuration. Use it as an indication, not as a guarantee.

2. Confirm the game’s own display menu

Launch the game and open its Display, Video or Graphics settings. Look for an HDR, High Dynamic Range or similarly named switch. Some games expose HDR only after the display is detected as HDR-capable; others place it in an advanced graphics submenu or require a restart after changing it.

If the Steam details page shows the badge but the in-game option is absent, greyed out or produces an incorrect image, treat the result as title- and version-specific. Check the game’s current update notes, SteamOS release notes and the display’s own HDR status rather than assuming the badge guarantees a working implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the game after changing displays

A game may show an HDR option on the Deck OLED and hide it when the device is connected to a non-HDR monitor. Conversely, an option may appear only after an HDR television or monitor is connected and SteamOS has enabled HDR for that display. Recheck the game menu after switching between handheld and docked play.

Enabling HDR while playing on the Deck OLED screen

What you need

  • A Steam Deck OLED model with the built-in HDR OLED panel.
  • A game that provides HDR output, preferably identified by the HDR badge in Steam app details.
  • A current game build and SteamOS version. HDR behavior can change when either is updated.

Procedure

  1. Open Library and select the game.
  2. On the game’s details page, check for the HDR badge.
  3. Start the game and open its display, video or graphics settings.
  4. Enable the game’s HDR option if one is provided. Apply the setting and restart the game if it requests a restart.
  5. Adjust the game’s HDR calibration controls, such as peak brightness, paper white or black level, only if the title provides them. These controls belong to the game and are not SteamOS-wide calibration settings.

Valve’s published Steam Deck OLED specifications establish that the panel is HDR-capable, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a separate handheld-wide HDR switch. Therefore, the practical activation step is normally inside the game. If a title has no HDR control, do not force a system setting that is not present; verify whether the game is marked for HDR output and whether its current version supports the feature.

Enabling HDR on a TV or monitor

1. Connect an HDR-capable display

Connect the Deck’s USB-C video output to an HDR-capable television or monitor. Valve documents DisplayPort over USB-C for external video and supports using the USB-C port for display connections when docked. The display, input and complete signal path must support HDR; the Deck alone cannot make a non-HDR panel display HDR.

A dock, hub, adapter or cable is not automatically compatible just because it carries video. Confirm the accessory’s own specifications for HDR, the required DisplayPort or HDMI conversion, supported resolution and refresh rate, and the display input’s capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open SteamOS Display Settings

  1. Open the Steam menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Display or Display Settings.
  4. Look for the HDR control. Valve’s SteamOS 3.5.5 release note describes the behavior as: “HDR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the external display.”
  5. Enable HDR, apply the change and allow the display to resynchronize if it briefly blanks or reconnects.

If the HDR control does not appear, SteamOS may not be detecting HDR support through the current connection. Check the television or monitor’s input setting, then inspect the dock, adapter and cable specifications before changing game settings.

3. Check the newer per-display location

Valve’s February 5, 2025 Steam Deck beta-client notes document a persistent per-display option at Display > Advanced > Enable HDR. Because that path was recorded in a beta client, labels and placement may differ in the stable SteamOS build installed on your Deck. Use the equivalent display-level HDR control if your version presents one, and verify the setting separately for each external display.

4. Enable HDR in the game

After SteamOS reports that the external display is using HDR, launch the game and revisit its display or graphics menu. Enable the game-level HDR option and complete any calibration it provides. Some games remember separate settings for different displays; others retain one profile and require manual adjustment when you move between the Deck screen and a television.

Handheld HDR and external HDR compared

Question Deck OLED screen TV or monitor
Is the panel HDR-capable? Yes. Valve specifies a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED panel. Only if the connected display supports HDR.
Is a global SteamOS switch documented? No separate handheld-wide switch is established in the cited Valve material. Yes, SteamOS provides a display-level HDR setting when support is detected.
Where should you check the game? Steam app details, then the game’s display or graphics menu. Steam app details, SteamOS Display Settings, then the game’s display or graphics menu.
What extra hardware matters? None beyond the Deck OLED itself. The display, USB-C video connection, dock or adapter, cable, input and selected signal mode.
Can the badge guarantee a correct result? No. It marks games identified as having HDR output. No. Game, SteamOS and signal-path behavior can all affect the result.

Why HDR may not work even when a game has the badge

Game-specific implementation

The badge describes marked HDR output, not a promise of identical behavior across every title. A game may expose HDR only in a particular rendering mode, require a restart, or show incorrect brightness until its calibration values are set. A missing menu option can also result from running a different build, compatibility layer or launch configuration than the one the developer tested.

SteamOS changes

HDR support is still being adjusted in SteamOS. Valve’s release notes provide a clear example: SteamOS 3.8.15, dated July 15, 2026, described an HDR-enablement fix for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The following 3.8.16 notes, dated July 16, 2026, said that fix had been reverted while Valve investigated the cause. The example shows why a game can change from working to broken, or the reverse, after an operating-system update.

External-display detection

SteamOS cannot expose external HDR unless the display advertises support through the active connection. A television may also have an HDR mode that must be enabled per input. If the display is connected through a dock or adapter that does not pass the relevant capability information, the Deck may present only standard-dynamic-range output even though the television itself supports HDR.

Signal and mode limitations

The cited Valve material does not guarantee HDR pass-through for every dock, hub, adapter, cable, resolution or refresh rate. A connection can work for ordinary video while failing to negotiate HDR at a particular mode. Test a simpler path when possible: connect directly to a known HDR-capable input, select a commonly supported resolution and refresh rate, and then check SteamOS Display Settings again.

Troubleshooting checklist

The HDR option is missing in the game

  • Check the Steam library details for the HDR badge.
  • Confirm that the game is fully updated and has been restarted after connecting the display.
  • On an external screen, verify that SteamOS has HDR enabled before opening the game.
  • Look in every display, video and advanced graphics submenu; menu names differ by title.
  • Check current game and SteamOS notes for a title-specific regression or fix.

The external HDR toggle is missing in SteamOS

  • Confirm that the television or monitor supports HDR and that HDR is enabled for the selected input.
  • Reconnect the USB-C video path and check every dock, hub, adapter and cable between the Deck and display.
  • Try the display’s other video input if it has different capabilities.
  • Check Display > Advanced > Enable HDR if your installed client uses the beta-documented layout; stable releases may label it differently.
  • Test without an intermediary accessory if your display accepts the Deck’s video connection directly.

The picture looks washed out, too dark or incorrectly colored

  • Confirm that both SteamOS and the game are actually in HDR mode; an HDR-capable television can still show an SDR signal.
  • Open the game’s HDR calibration screen and reset its values before making small adjustments.
  • Check the television or monitor’s current input mode and picture preset.
  • Compare the same game on the internal panel and the external display. If only one path is affected, focus troubleshooting on that path rather than changing every setting at once.
  • Check for a recent game or SteamOS update, especially when the problem began immediately after updating.

HDR works in one game but not another

That result is possible and does not by itself indicate faulty hardware. HDR support is implemented per game, and Valve’s badge is title-specific. Record the game version, SteamOS version, display connection and whether you are using the internal panel or an external screen, then check the title’s current support information.

What the HDR badge does—and does not—tell you

The badge tells you that Valve has marked the game as having HDR output in Steam app details. It does not state a universal quality level, guarantee that every scene is correctly mastered, or certify every Proton, docked and handheld combination. It also does not replace the game’s own HDR calibration controls.

Use a five-part check for a reliable answer:

  1. The game has the Steam HDR badge, or its current documentation explicitly lists HDR.
  2. The game’s own display menu exposes HDR.
  3. The Deck OLED is being used as the internal panel, or the external display is HDR-capable.
  4. SteamOS has detected and enabled HDR for the external display when one is connected.
  5. The current game and SteamOS versions work together in the selected configuration.

If any one of these conditions fails, HDR may be unavailable even though the other four are satisfied.

Before buying a display or dock for HDR

The Deck OLED does not need an external screen for handheld HDR. An external purchase is relevant only if you want a larger docked HDR image. Before buying, verify the entire chain rather than relying on a product label:

  • The television or monitor explicitly supports HDR.
  • The intended input supports HDR at the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
  • The dock, hub or adapter documents HDR pass-through for its output type.
  • The cable is suitable for the chosen connection and mode.
  • The setup leaves SteamOS able to detect the display and expose its HDR control.

Valve’s specifications and release notes establish the Deck’s USB-C DisplayPort capability and SteamOS’s conditional external-HDR setting, but they do not certify every third-party accessory combination. Check each manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact model and signal path.

Keeping HDR working after updates

When HDR behavior changes, write down whether you were using the internal panel or an external display, the game version, SteamOS version and connection route. Recheck the Steam badge, the game menu and SteamOS Display Settings after updating. The Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced change between SteamOS 3.8.15 and 3.8.16 demonstrates that a documented fix can be reverted while its cause is investigated, so a previously working title may require a later update before it behaves normally again.

For routine play, enable HDR only where the display and game both support it, keep the game’s calibration profile matched to that display, and avoid assuming that a setting proven on the Deck screen will carry over unchanged to a television or monitor.
