This setting is not currently documented by Hytale itself. The key name, placement, and whether the setting is global or per-world should therefore be treated as provisional and confirmed by testing your own server after every game update.

What the keep-inventory setting does
Hytale applies a death penalty through the ItemsLossMode option. The setting has three reported values:

For a full keep-everything setup, hosting guides also set both the item-loss and durability-loss percentages to 0. Those percentage fields matter when ItemsLossMode is Configured; setting them to zero as well makes the intended behavior explicit and protects the configuration if the mode is later changed.

Before you edit the server
Stop the server completely
Use the host’s Stop control and wait until the console reports that the process has shut down. Editing while Hytale is running can be unsafe because the server may rewrite the file on shutdown and overwrite your changes. Do not edit a live file through a web panel, FTP client, or shell.
Make a backup
Download the affected config.json files or copy them to a separate backup directory. A backup gives you a quick rollback if the server refuses to start, a JSON mistake is introduced, or an update changes the configuration format.
Identify every world
The file is commonly located at universe/worlds/<world>/config.json. The folder name between worlds and config.json identifies the world. If your server has a lobby, survival world, event world, or other separate worlds, list them before editing so you do not change only the first one you find.
Use an editor that preserves plain JSON
A code editor with matching brackets and JSON validation is preferable. Avoid word processors and editors that automatically replace quotation marks, add formatting, or append a file extension. Preserve the existing indentation and all unrelated entries.
How to enable keep inventory step by step
1. Open the world’s configuration file
After the server is stopped, open the file manager or connect to the server’s files. Browse to the relevant world directory, normally under universe/worlds/, and open that world’s config.json.

Some panels expose this as a Files page rather than showing the complete filesystem. The names may differ, but the target remains the per-world config.json, not a client-side Hytale settings file.

2. Find GameplayConfig
Search the file for GameplayConfig. Guides disagree about the exact location of the death block: one places it below the GameplayConfig entry, while another places it immediately after a line such as "GameplayConfig": "Default". Use the structure already present in your file and keep the death settings inside the GameplayConfig section.
The Death block may not exist in a newly generated file. If it is absent, add one inside the appropriate GameplayConfig object. If a death block or an ItemsLossMode line already exists, edit that entry instead of creating a second copy.
3. Set the loss mode to None
Change the value of the existing key to:
"ItemsLossMode": "None"Capitalization matters. Use the spelling shown above, including the capital I, capital L, and capital M. Do not use none, KeepInventory, or a Minecraft-style gamerule; those are different names and are not established Hytale keys.
4. Set the percentage fields to zero
Within the same death configuration, set the existing item-loss percentage and durability-loss percentage fields to 0. The guides reviewed for this setting do not establish one universally documented spelling for those percentage keys, so do not invent new names. If your file already contains those fields, change their numeric values to zero. If your host’s generated file uses different labels, retain the labels it supplied and alter only their values.

Do not delete other GameplayConfig properties. A minimal change is safer than replacing the entire section.
5. Check commas and braces
JSON is strict. Confirm that every opening brace has a matching closing brace, every property name and text value uses straight double quotation marks, numeric percentages are numbers rather than quoted text, and commas appear between sibling properties but not after the final property in an object.
A typical insertion may look conceptually like this, but the surrounding property order and additional fields will vary by build:

}The ellipses above are explanatory markers, not text to paste. Keep the actual entries from your file and remove any duplicate key before saving.

Run the completed file through a JSON validator or use the syntax checker in your editor. Validation catches missing commas, mismatched braces, smart quotes, and accidental comments. A file can look correct in a web panel and still be invalid JSON.

7. Save, then restart
Save the file in its original location and start the server. Watch the startup console for configuration or parsing errors. If the server fails to load, stop it, restore the backup, and reapply the change more carefully rather than repeatedly restarting with an invalid file.
Confirm that items and durability are retained
Do not assume a successful startup proves that the setting worked. Perform a controlled test with inexpensive items first:
- Join the affected world and record which items you are carrying and the durability of at least one damaged item.
- Trigger a death in a safe, deliberate test location.
- Respawn and open your inventory.
- Check that the items remain and that the observed durability behavior matches your server’s intended rule.
- Review the server console for death, configuration, or world-loading errors.
Repeat the test in each world where players should keep inventory. A server that starts normally can still be using a different world file than the one you edited.

Published hosting guidance is inconsistent. One guide says the settings are read at server start and apply globally to all players; another describes them as per-world settings. Because the file is stored inside each world directory, the safest operational assumption is to configure every relevant world and then test each one.
If your server has a single world, edit that world’s file and test there. For multiple worlds:

- Stop the server.
- Back up every relevant
config.json. - Apply the same death configuration to each world that should use keep inventory.
- Start the server once all files validate.
- Test death in each world separately.
If one world retains items while another does not, compare their files for a missing Death block, a different ItemsLossMode value, or a syntax change introduced during editing.

Common problems and fixes

Choosing a different death rule
Hardcore-style loss
For maximum punishment, guides use ItemsLossMode set to All and an item-loss percentage of 100. This is the opposite of keep inventory. Back up your previous file before switching so you can restore the less-punishing rule later.
Partial loss
Configured enables percentage-based loss. Examples in hosting guides use 10% and 50% item-loss settings, but those are examples rather than a Hytale standard. Choose percentages deliberately, set the durability percentage separately, and test the result because the exact implementation is not confirmed by official documentation.
Using a mod instead of editing JSON
A CurseForge project named “Keep Inventory Fixed” is described as removing death penalties. Its author warns that the original version could break the game by overwriting configuration assets and says a rewritten version was published. For that reason, direct editing of the world configuration is the safer first method in the available guidance.
If you still choose a mod, back up the server, verify that the release supports your Hytale build, install it only while the server is stopped, and test on a disposable world before deploying it to players. A mod update can change behavior independently of the world file.
Maintenance after Hytale updates
The setting has no Hytale-published reference confirming its key name, values, placement, or scope. Recheck the behavior after updates rather than assuming an old configuration remains valid.
- Record the Hytale server build and the date you last tested keep inventory.
- Keep a known-good backup of each world’s configuration.
- After an update, compare regenerated files for changes around
GameplayConfigandDeath. - Validate JSON before the first post-update launch.
- Repeat a real death test in every world.
As of the latest review on October 14, 2026, no official Hytale documentation for ItemsLossMode was found. Treat the configuration as provisional, and verify it again within 30 days of a major server update or whenever death behavior changes.
