For most WordPress sites, lazy loading is already enabled: WordPress 5.5 and later adds the native loading="lazy" attribute to eligible images, and WordPress 5.7 added the same support for iframes. Update WordPress, use normal image or embed tools, then verify the rendered HTML. Keep the hero, logo, featured image, and other above-the-fold media eager so the browser can fetch the largest contentful paint (LCP) image immediately.

What lazy loading does in WordPress
Lazy loading tells the browser to postpone downloading media until it is close to entering the visitor’s viewport. Instead of fetching every image and embed while the page is first rendered, the browser prioritizes content the visitor can see and delays lower-page resources. That can reduce early network work, mobile data use, and battery consumption. It is not a blanket speed guarantee: delaying an image that is needed for the first screen can make the page feel slower.

The 5.9 behavior is a sensible default, not a promise that every theme identifies the actual LCP element. A custom header, page-builder layout, background image, or manually inserted markup can place a different asset above the fold.

Do you need a lazy-loading plugin?
No plugin is required for basic image and iframe lazy loading on a current WordPress installation. Core covers images in post content, excerpts, text widgets, avatars, and attachment-image output, provided the markup is produced through supported WordPress functions.
A plugin becomes useful when the site needs features outside that baseline, such as lazy loading for HTML5 video, custom distance-from-viewport thresholds, placeholder or blur strategies, exclusion lists managed by administrators, source restoration, or a no-JavaScript fallback. Adding another optimization layer also adds compatibility work. Check whether an existing cache, image-optimization, page-builder, or performance plugin already modifies loading, src, srcset, or embed markup before activating a second tool.

- Update the site safely. Update WordPress, the active theme, and plugins through the normal maintenance process. Take the backup and staging precautions your site normally uses, then clear any page, object, CDN, or browser cache after updates.
- Add media through a supported path. Insert an image with the Media Library and block editor, or render an attachment with a standard function such as
wp_get_attachment_image(). Insert an iframe through a supported embed or valid HTML that includes a source and dimensions. - Open the public page. Do not inspect only the editor preview. Load the URL in a browser after caches have been purged so you are checking the HTML delivered to visitors.
- Inspect the rendered element. Use View Source or browser developer tools and search for the relevant
<img>or<iframe>. An eligible deferred element should containloading="lazy". WordPress-generated images commonly also include intrinsicwidthandheight, plus responsivesrcsetandsizeswhen those values can be generated. - Inspect the first viewport separately. Identify the image or frame that is actually visible on a phone and desktop before scrolling. Confirm that the LCP candidate is not marked lazy merely because another element happens to be first in the document.
- Run a performance audit. Compare a cold load and a repeat load, and check the audit’s LCP and network waterfall. The goal is to defer below-the-fold media while allowing the initial visual to start early.
If the attribute is absent, that does not automatically mean lazy loading is broken. The element may be intentionally eager, may come from custom markup, or may have been altered after WordPress generated it. Inspect the final response and the element’s origin before changing settings.
Keep the hero and LCP image eager
The hero image, logo, featured image, or other media visible immediately should normally load eagerly. A lazy attribute on an above-the-fold asset can delay the request until the browser decides it is near the viewport, increasing the time before the primary visual appears. WordPress 5.9 attempts to protect the first content image or iframe, but the first item in document order is not always the page’s true LCP element.
Review each important template rather than applying one site-wide assumption. A blog post may have a title and text before its first image; a game landing page may place a CSS background or a custom hero component ahead of the first content image. If testing shows that the first visible asset is deferred, set that specific element to eager or omit lazy loading for it. Do not mark an image both lazy and high priority: those instructions conflict and can undermine the intended fetch order.

Why width and height attributes matter
Every deferred image should reserve its space before the file arrives. Supplying reliable width and height lets the browser calculate the aspect ratio during layout, preventing text and controls from jumping when the image downloads. Standard WordPress image functions generally provide these intrinsic dimensions, and responsive srcset/sizes lets the browser choose an appropriate resource.

- When writing custom markup, include both numeric dimensions and a responsive source set where appropriate.
- Keep the displayed aspect ratio consistent with the selected file, including on narrow screens.
- Check long pages while scrolling: a layout shift can occur well below the first viewport even when the header appears stable.
How iframe and video lazy loading differ
WordPress 5.7 added iframe support, and the core function wp_lazy_loading_enabled() returns true by default for both img and iframe tags. An iframe still needs a source and dimensions for the loading attribute to be added. A correctly generated YouTube or other iframe embed can therefore be deferred without a separate plugin.
That does not make every video lightweight. A player implemented with a <video> element, a custom JavaScript embed, or a page-builder facade may not use an iframe at all. The player can still download scripts, posters, or metadata before the visitor scrolls. For those cases, use a purpose-built facade or a plugin that supports video elements, placeholders, source restoration, and a no-JavaScript fallback. Test the play button, keyboard access, captions, and consent behavior after any optimization.
How to exclude one image or change the rule in code
Use core filters when an exception belongs to a template or a known rendering context. Keep the exception narrow; disabling lazy loading globally removes the benefit for every image.

Set a content image to eager
For images in post content, the per-tag hook wp_img_tag_add_loading_attr can return eager for a hero or false to omit the attribute. A callback should identify the intended tag by its attributes, template, or content position rather than making every content image eager.
Control attachment output directly
Attachment-image attributes can be customized with the attachment-image attributes filter, or a loading value can be passed when calling wp_get_attachment_image(). This is often the cleanest approach when the template already knows whether an image is a hero, thumbnail, or below-the-fold gallery item.
After adding a filter, inspect the final HTML. Hook priority, another callback, a page builder, a minifier, or a cache layer can change the attribute later. The browser only sees the final markup.
Core versus a plugin: choosing the right level of control

Choose core when ordinary images and iframes meet the requirement. Choose a plugin only for a concrete missing capability, and measure whether its scripts and processing offset the benefit of its extra controls. The WordPress.org listing for Smart LazyLoad, for example, documents video, thresholds, placeholders, exclusions, source restoration, and no-JavaScript fallbacks and requires WordPress 5.8 or later; verify current compatibility and avoid overlapping implementations before activation.

Troubleshooting common failures
No loading="lazy" appears
- Confirm the element is an eligible image or iframe and is generated through a supported WordPress function.
- Check that the image has dimensions and that the iframe has a source and dimensions.
- Inspect View Source as well as the live DOM; a script may replace the original node after page load.
- Temporarily test with the page builder, optimization plugin, and cache layer isolated on staging. Any of them can strip or rewrite the attribute.
- Remember that an intentionally eager above-the-fold element should not be changed just to make the attribute appear.
The hero image loads slowly
Find the LCP candidate in the performance audit and network waterfall. If it carries loading="lazy", exclude it or set it to eager in the template. Also check that responsive srcset is not selecting an unnecessarily large file and that the image is not hidden inside a JavaScript carousel that waits to initialize.

The page jumps while scrolling
Add accurate width and height attributes, preserve the image’s aspect ratio, and check that a placeholder or CSS rule is not changing the reserved dimensions after the request starts. Test at multiple viewport widths because a fixed desktop ratio can still shift on a phone.
An embedded video is still heavy
Inspect whether the embed is an iframe, a video element, or a custom player. Iframe lazy loading does not defer every script used by a player. Use a facade or a video-capable optimization tool when appropriate, then test playback, poster images, captions, consent, and keyboard controls.
A filter has no effect
Verify the callback’s tag name and context, confirm the hook priority and accepted argument count, and inspect the final response after clearing caches. Another callback that runs later can overwrite your value. Make the condition more specific rather than increasing exclusions blindly.
A practical testing routine for WordPress sites
- Test an uncached mobile view and record the first viewport’s visual order.
- Identify the LCP image or iframe and confirm it is eager or otherwise requested early.
- Scroll through a long page and verify that lower images request as they approach the viewport.
- Watch for layout movement when each image appears; dimensions should reserve the intended space.
- Open pages with galleries, avatars, widgets, embeds, and custom theme components because they may use different rendering contexts.
- Repeat after enabling any plugin or cache feature. Compare network requests, LCP, layout stability, JavaScript errors, and interaction behavior rather than relying on one score.
There is no universal performance percentage to promise. The reliable principle is conditional: deferring below-the-fold media can reduce early downloads, while deferring the LCP image can worsen perceived load time. Measure the specific templates and devices that matter to your audience.

- Keep WordPress, the theme, and plugins current so core’s native behavior and security fixes remain available.
- After a redesign, recheck which element is actually above the fold; document-order assumptions can become wrong.
- Keep intrinsic dimensions and responsive image attributes in custom components.
- Review optimization plugins for overlapping lazy-load features before enabling another implementation.
- Re-test cached, uncached, mobile, desktop, logged-in, and consented states when embeds or scripts differ between them.
- Use filters for deliberate template exceptions and inspect the delivered HTML whenever a change appears ineffective.

Should every image on a page be lazy-loaded?
No. Keep media required for the initial render eager, especially the LCP image and visible branding. Defer images that are genuinely below the fold.
Does lazy loading reduce image file size?
