To review a game you played, download its replay from the End of Game screen or Match History, then select Watch Replay. To watch a friend’s ranked game after it ends, open that player’s profile and Match History. For professional matches, use the official LoL Esports broadcasts and VODs; an in-client replay is not required.
What “Spectator Mode” means in the current League client
Older League of Legends guides often show an eye-shaped Spectate button beside players in ranked leaderboards. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes say that direct live spectating from ranked leaderboards is being replaced by a shortcut to the player’s Match History and replays. That is why the eye control may be missing even when an older tutorial says it should be there.

The practical distinction is important:
- In-client replay: a downloadable
.roflfile that lets you review a completed match with the game client’s camera and timeline tools. - Live ranked spectating: the former leaderboard-based view, whose access is now being redirected toward Match History and available replays.
- Professional viewing: live broadcasts and recorded matches on LoL Esports, with a separate, player-focused Pro View feature documented historically.
There is no setting you need to turn on to unlock the current replay workflow. The download control appears when a match is eligible and the client still has it in its replay window.

How to download and open your own replay
Riot’s supported sequence takes place immediately after a match or later from Match History. The replay is downloaded first; only then does the control become Watch Replay.

Method 1: use the End of Game screen
- Finish a match and remain on the End of Game screen.
- Look in the upper-right area for the download button beside Advanced Details. Riot describes this as the location of the replay control.
- Select the download control and wait for the client to finish creating the replay file.
- When the download is complete, the same control changes to Watch Replay.
- Select Watch Replay to launch the match in the League client’s replay viewer.
The replay is not a conventional video file. It is a client-readable .rofl recording of the match state, so it opens through League rather than a normal media player.
Method 2: download from Match History
- Open your profile in the League client.
- Open Match History.
- Find the completed game you want to review.
- Select its download control. The control changes to Watch Replay after the
.roflfile is available. - Select Watch Replay to start the replay.
Use Match History when you left the post-game screen, want to review an older recent match, or need to download several games before a patch update. The client’s replay list is limited to the latest 20 games, not an unlimited archive.
How to watch a friend’s ranked replay
Riot’s replay FAQ says ranked replays can be downloaded from the Match History tab of a friend’s profile. This is the supported route when you want to study a friend’s completed game.
- Open your friend’s profile in the client.
- Select the Match History tab.
- Locate the ranked match you want to inspect.
- Use the replay download control for that match.
- After the download finishes, select Watch Replay.
The presence of a match in someone’s history does not promise that you can watch it live. Riot’s current leaderboard change specifically redirects players toward Match History and replays, so a missing live button is expected behavior rather than a setting failure.

Why the live Spectate button disappeared
Patch 25.23 explains the interface change: direct live-game spectating from ranked leaderboards is being replaced with a shortcut to the player’s Match History and replays. Consequently, instructions that tell you to find an eye icon beside a ranked player may describe an older client.
When you want to check a player now, open that player’s profile and look for a downloadable replay in Match History. If no replay control is shown, the match may not be an eligible ranked replay, may have fallen outside the client’s latest-20 window, or may no longer work because the patch cycle has advanced.
Replay lifetime, patch changes and the 20-game limit
Riot says replays are available only for the latest 20 games in the client and last for the length of the current patch cycle. A replay from an earlier patch can stop working after the next game update. Treat the replay as temporary match data rather than permanent storage.

Controls for reviewing a replay
Riot documents several controls that make a replay useful for analysis rather than simply replaying the match at normal speed.

- Champion hotkeys: keys
1through5andQthroughTselect champions for the corresponding replay view. - Lock the camera: double-press a champion key to lock the camera to that champion.
- Pan smoothly: hold and drag the middle mouse button for smoother camera movement.
These controls let you switch between an observer-wide view and an individual player’s perspective. Use the wide view to study rotations and objective setups, then lock to a champion to examine pathing, trades or ability timing.
How to save a moment as a shareable video
The replay itself is a .rofl client recording, but the client can record selected moments as Highlights. Riot says Highlights are saved in .webm format and can be shared as ordinary video files.
- Open the relevant match replay and move to the moment you want to preserve.
- Use the client’s Highlight recording function to capture that segment.
- Finish the recording and locate the resulting
.webmfile. - Share the video file rather than the patch-dependent
.roflreplay when recipients need a normal playable clip.
Highlights do not contain the same interactive replay state as the client replay. They are the better choice for a permanent clip that should remain viewable after the game client moves to a later patch.

How to watch professional League matches
Live broadcasts and standard VODs
The dependable general-purpose route for professional games is the official LoL Esports destination. It provides live event coverage and recorded VODs, so you can watch a match even when no downloadable in-client replay is offered.

Riot’s Riot Mobile documentation describes an Esports section that can be configured for favorite leagues. From there, viewers can tune in live for Esports drops or catch up on VODs of recent matches. This is a browser/mobile viewing workflow, not the League client’s .rofl replay system.
Player-focused viewing and Pro View
Riot’s Pro View FAQ describes a more player-focused experience: sign in to LoL Esports with a Riot Account, open the Pro View tab, and use features such as real-time highlights plus live-match and VOD viewing. That documentation is historical and does not establish that Pro View is offered, priced or configured the same way today.
Before relying on Pro View, open the current LoL Esports site and check whether the tab appears and what access terms apply. If it is unavailable, use the event’s standard live broadcast or VOD instead.

Choose according to the type of analysis you need:
- Replay: best for your own games or a friend’s eligible ranked game, because you can pause, move through the timeline and change the camera.
- Live professional broadcast: best when the match is happening now and you want the official event presentation.
- Standard professional VOD: best for catching up after the event through a browser or mobile Esports section.
- Player-focused view: useful when an active Pro View offering provides the individual perspective you need; confirm current availability first.
The file and access models also differ. Client replays are temporary, patch-bound .rofl data. Highlights are exported .webm videos. LoL Esports VODs are streamed or played from the service rather than opened as local League replay files.

Troubleshooting missing controls or unusable replays
The download button is missing
- Check that you are viewing the correct completed match in End of Game or Match History.
- Confirm that the match is within the client’s latest 20 games.
- If it is an older game, consider whether a patch update has ended its replay availability.
- For another player, verify that you are looking at the person’s Match History and that the match is ranked, since Riot’s documented friend-replay workflow applies to ranked replays.
The button says Watch Replay, but the replay will not open
Replay compatibility follows the patch cycle. Riot warns that a replay from an earlier patch may stop working after the next game update. If the game has crossed a patch boundary, the file may no longer be usable even though its entry remains visible.
You expected to watch a friend live
The current leaderboard change is the likely explanation. Ranked-leaderboard live spectating is being redirected to Match History and replays, so use the completed-match workflow rather than searching for the old eye icon.
You cannot hear or read in-game chat in the replay
Riot’s replay FAQ says replays show gameplay but do not include in-game chat. A missing chat transcript is therefore a limitation of the replay format, not a playback error.

Record the moment as a Highlight and keep the resulting .webm file. The exported video is suitable for ordinary sharing, whereas the interactive .rofl replay is tied to client and patch compatibility.
