To enable YouTube Live, verify your channel by phone in YouTube Studio, then open Create > Go Live. First-time access may take up to 24 hours to become available. Your channel must also have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person starting the stream must be at least 16.
Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Settings, then Channel and Features.
- Under Features that require phone verification, select Verify phone number and follow the prompts. YouTube sends a code by text or voice call.
- After verification, select Create > Go Live to open the Live Control Room. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours; it is a possible wait, not a guaranteed delay.
YouTube says phone verification unlocks live streaming along with other features. A phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year. For a channel that is not a Brand Account, only its owner can complete phone verification; Brand Account owners and managers can verify it.
Check eligibility if Go Live is unavailable
- Channel verification: Complete the phone-verification steps above.
- Recent restrictions: YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility guidance requires no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Restrictions may result from policy or copyright issues.
- Age: The person starting a live stream must be at least 16. YouTube says a person under 16 may participate through an adult-owned account only when the adult is visibly present and actively co-creating; the minor should not operate the stream alone.
- Activation time: If you have just enabled streaming, allow for YouTube’s stated possible wait of up to 24 hours before trying again.
- Mobile requirements: The 50-subscriber threshold applies to mobile streaming, not desktop webcam or encoder streaming. YouTube’s mobile requirements are at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live restriction in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. First-time mobile access may also take up to 24 hours to become available.
YouTube does not allow an account restricted from live streaming to use another channel to bypass that restriction. Check your channel’s status and follow YouTube’s instructions rather than switching accounts to get around a block.
Choose how to go live

For a simple computer stream, select Webcam, add a title and description, choose the privacy setting, select the correct webcam and microphone, then click Go Live. For a scheduled event or a more involved production, use the Live Control Room’s management options and the encoder workflow as appropriate. YouTube also lists mobile and console as streaming methods; you do not need to buy gear just to activate the feature.

Test the stream before an event
These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility requirements. YouTube advises that your total stream bitrate stay within your available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom for network variation.
- Test your audio, video, and internet connection before the event.
- Preview the feed in Live Control Room before starting, and confirm the stream can be reached from your channel or watch page and on mobile.
- Monitor audio and video quality while you are live.
- For an encoder event, YouTube suggests setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
Troubleshoot common activation problems
The Go Live option is missing
Check that phone verification is complete under Settings > Channel > Features. Then check for live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days and allow time for first-time activation to become available.

Mobile streaming is unavailable
Confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s mobile-specific requirements, including at least 50 subscribers and a supported operating system. That subscriber threshold is not a requirement for desktop webcam or encoder streaming.
The verification code does not arrive
Try the other delivery method—text or voice call—and make sure the number has not already been linked to two channels during the year. YouTube limits a phone number to two channel verifications per year.

The stream is unstable or the preview has poor quality
Check that your upload bandwidth can support the selected bitrate, with room for fluctuations. Reduce the bitrate or adjust the stream settings if your connection cannot reliably sustain it, then test and preview again before going live.
You are blocked from streaming
Review the channel’s restriction or policy notice and address it through YouTube’s process. Do not use another channel to bypass a live-streaming restriction.
