Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo enable Steam Overlay on Windows, open the Steam desktop client, go to Steam > Settings > In Game, turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game, launch the game through Steam, and press Shift+Tab. To disable it, turn off the global switch or the individual game setting in Properties.
Steam provides two useful levels of control: a global switch for all games and a per-game option for a single title. If Steam Overlay is not showing up, the launch path, shortcut assignment, external launcher overlays, and other third-party software may also be involved.

Key takeaways
- The global Steam Overlay control is under Steam > Settings > In Game.
- Shift+Tab is the default Steam Overlay shortcut, but Steam lets you change it.
- You can disable Steam Overlay for every game or only for one game.
- Launching the game through Steam gives the Overlay the best chance of appearing reliably.
- External launcher overlays, screen-capture tools, and other third-party programs can interfere with Steam Overlay.
How do you enable Steam Overlay on Windows?
To enable Steam Overlay on Windows, open the Steam desktop client, go to Steam > Settings > In Game, turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game, and launch the game from Steam. While playing, press Shift+Tab to open the Overlay. Valve documents Shift+Tab as the default shortcut in its Steamworks Overlay documentation.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open the In Game section.
- Enable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Start the affected game from your Steam library.
- Press Shift+Tab after the game loads.
The Steam Overlay provides Steam’s in-game interface, including access to community and Steam features while a compatible game is running. The basic procedure requires no new keyboard, controller, utility, or other hardware.

How do you disable Steam Overlay?
To disable Steam Overlay globally, return to Steam > Settings > In Game and turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Global disabling affects Steam’s general Overlay behavior across your games.
If the Overlay causes problems in only one title, use the game-specific setting instead. This preserves the Overlay in other games.
Disable Steam Overlay for one game
- Open your Steam library.
- Right-click the game you want to change.
- Select Properties.
- Find the game’s Overlay option in the properties window.
- Turn off the individual Steam Overlay setting.
The exact placement or wording of the per-game control can vary with Steam’s interface, but the purpose is the same: create a narrower exception without changing the global setting.
| Choice | Scope | Best use | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Overlay setting | All games | The Overlay causes problems across multiple games | Turns the general Steam Overlay behavior on or off |
| Per-game Overlay setting | One game | Only one title has a conflict or does not need the Overlay | Changes that game without affecting other titles |
What is the Steam Overlay shortcut?
The default Steam Overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab. Valve’s Steamworks documentation states: “The default key for a user to access the overlay while in a game is SHIFT+TAB.” You can verify or change the shortcut in Steam’s Settings > In Game area.
Do not assume Shift+Tab is still assigned if the shortcut does nothing. A previous settings change may have replaced it, or the game may already use Shift+Tab for another action.

Why is Steam Overlay not showing up?
Steam Overlay not showing up usually means that the global setting, the individual game setting, the launch path, the shortcut, or another overlay-enabled program needs checking. Work through these checks in order.
1. Check the global Overlay setting
Open Steam > Settings > In Game and confirm that Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game is enabled. If this switch is off, Shift+Tab will not open the Overlay.
2. Check the affected game’s setting
A game can have its own Steam Overlay setting. Open the game’s Steam properties and verify that the individual Overlay option has not been disabled for that title. Steam Support includes both global and game-specific Overlay checks in its troubleshooting guidance.
3. Launch the game through Steam
Close the game and start it from the Steam client or Steam library. Steam’s documentation recommends launching through Steam when diagnosing why the Overlay does not appear. A game started through another route, an external launcher, or a shortcut may not provide the same Overlay context.
4. Confirm the Steam Overlay shortcut
Check the assigned shortcut under Steam’s Settings > In Game section. Shift+Tab is the default, not a permanent requirement. Also check whether the game uses the same key combination for another command.

5. Temporarily close conflicting software
Third-party programs, screen-capture software, and external launcher overlays can compete with Steam Overlay or interfere with how it is injected into a game. Close or disable those overlays temporarily, then launch the game through Steam and test again. Re-enable programs one at a time afterward if you need to identify the conflict.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →6. Restart Steam completely
Fully exit Steam rather than merely closing the library window. Relaunch the client, start the game from Steam, and test the shortcut again. Steam Support lists restarting the Steam client among the recommended troubleshooting steps.
These checks cannot guarantee a fix for every Windows game. Overlay behavior can vary by game, rendering technology, launch path, external launcher, and other software running on the PC.
Does Steam Overlay work with every game?
Steam Overlay support depends on how the game runs. Steamworks documents support for games using DirectX 7 through DirectX 12, OpenGL, Metal, and Vulkan, while noting that the Overlay is not active in software-rasterized games. Compatibility can also vary because of the game’s implementation, external launchers, and conflicting software; see Valve’s Steamworks technical documentation for the supported rendering details.
That is why an enabled setting does not always mean the Overlay will be visible in every launch context. The practical test is to use a Steam-launched copy of the game, confirm both Overlay settings, verify the shortcut, and remove likely conflicts.

Can you open Steam Overlay with a controller?
Yes. Steam Support documents pressing the Steam button on a controller as an alternate way to invoke the Overlay; pressing Shift+Tab on the keyboard is the other documented path. A controller is optional and is not required to enable Steam Overlay on a Windows PC.
Valve describes the Overlay as important to Steam Controller functionality in its Steam Controller configuration support page, but that does not make a controller a prerequisite for the normal keyboard-based procedure.
Is Steam’s performance overlay the same as Steam Overlay?
No. Steam’s full Community/Game Overlay and Steam’s performance overlay are separate features. Both can have controls in the Settings > In Game area, but an FPS or performance display is not the same as the main Overlay opened with Shift+Tab.
If your goal is to browse Steam features or use the in-game Steam interface, troubleshoot the main Overlay setting. If your goal is only an FPS or performance readout, check the separate performance-overlay controls instead.

What should you change first?
Use the narrowest change that matches the problem. Enable the global setting when you want Steam Overlay available generally, disable the per-game setting when one title is the exception, and disable the global setting only when the Overlay is causing wider problems. For a missing Overlay, check settings and the launch path before changing hardware or installing third-party software.

The default Steam Overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab. Check Steam > Settings > In Game if Shift+Tab is not working, because the shortcut may have been changed or may conflict with an in-game command.
Can I disable Steam Overlay for only one game?
Yes. Open the game’s Steam Properties and turn off its individual Overlay setting. This disables Steam Overlay for that title while leaving the global setting unchanged for other games.
How do I fix Steam Overlay not showing up?
Start the game from the Steam client, confirm the global and per-game Overlay settings, verify the shortcut, temporarily close conflicting overlays or screen-capture software, and restart Steam completely.

The Bottom Line
Steam Overlay is controlled natively in Steam > Settings > In Game.
