Open open.spotify.com in a supported, up-to-date browser and sign in. You do not install a separate Web Player program. If Spotify says “Playback of protected content is not enabled,” turn on your browser’s DRM/protected-content permission; if the site loads but a song will not start, check autoplay, cookies, extensions and the network in that order.
Browser and device requirements
Spotify’s Web Player runs in a normal browser, but the browser and operating system must meet Spotify’s current compatibility requirements. Spotify describes desktop support by browser family and a rolling baseline: use a broadly available browser version released or updated within the last 30 months. Spotify does not publish one fixed minimum desktop version number, so updating through your browser’s built-in Help or About page is the safest test.

| Device | Supported browser requirements | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, macOS or other desktop operating systems | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera or Safari; use a broadly available version updated within the previous 30 months | A Spotify account and a browser that can play protected HTML5 media |
| Android | Android 6.0 or later, plus Chrome 87 or later, Samsung Internet 17 or later, or Firefox 115 or later | A supported mobile browser and an internet connection |
| iPhone or iPad | Chrome 87 or later or Safari 15 or later | A supported iOS browser and an internet connection |
These requirements come from Spotify’s Web Player help page. A browser outside the listed families may display the login screen yet fail when Spotify requests protected audio.

There is no separate Web Player installer, browser plug-in, Flash package or paid browser add-on. The player is delivered by open.spotify.com, while your browser supplies the HTML5 audio and protected-content components. Firefox can enable or download Google Widevine’s content-decryption module when necessary; you normally do not fetch Widevine from another website. On standard Windows, macOS, Android and iOS installations, opening the site in a supported browser is the complete setup.

The main exception is Windows 10 N. That edition leaves out media technologies included in ordinary Windows editions, so Spotify requires Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack. Installing that Windows component is different from installing a Spotify program and may require a restart before the browser can use it.
Open the Web Player and sign in
- Open your browser and enter
https://open.spotify.comin the address bar. - Select Log in.
- Choose the sign-in method attached to your Spotify account and complete any verification prompt.
- Search for a track, album or playlist, then select a track to test playback.
If the page opens normally, there is no additional “Web Player” download. The browser handles the player interface, account session and audio output. A browser that is current but configured to block protected media can still show the site while refusing to play a song, so use the error message to choose the next setting.
When testing, select a specific track rather than waiting for a page to start by itself. Autoplay policies can block an unprompted start even when DRM is working. A successful test should show the track in the bottom player, move the progress indicator and produce sound through the selected device.

Fix “Playback of protected content is not enabled”
That message means the browser’s protected-content system is disabled, unavailable or prevented from authenticating. Spotify generally relies on the browser’s built-in media components, such as Google Widevine, rather than a separate Spotify plug-in. Enable the relevant permission for the browser you are using, reload Spotify, and test a track again.
Chrome on desktop
- Enter
chrome://settings/contentin the address bar. - Select open.spotify.com if it appears in the site list.
- Scroll to Protected content IDs.
- Set the permission to Allow or Default.
- Close the Spotify tab, open
https://open.spotify.comagain, sign in if necessary and try playback.
You can reach the general control through More ⋮ → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Protected content IDs. Chrome normally allows protected content, so a blocked site-specific rule or a hardened privacy profile is often the reason for the error. Google explains the setting in its protected-content instructions.
If sign-in loops, the account does not load, or the player forgets your session, inspect cookie restrictions after checking DRM. Go to More ⋮ → Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies. Under Sites allowed to use third-party cookies, select Add and create a site-specific exception if your privacy policy permits it. Google warns that sites depending on third-party cookies may not work as expected when those cookies are blocked; its current explanation is at Chrome cookie settings.

Firefox on desktop
- Open the Firefox menu ☰ and choose Settings.
- On General, find Digital Rights Management (DRM) Content.
- Enable Play DRM-controlled content.
- Alternatively, enter
about:preferences#contentand turn on Play DRM under DRM content. - If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the page, select Enable DRM, then reload Spotify.
Firefox supports Google Widevine for protected HTML5 audio and video and can download or enable the content-decryption module when it is needed, with your permission. You normally do not download Widevine manually. Mozilla documents the feature at Enable DRM content in Firefox.
DRM and autoplay are separate controls. If Spotify loads and a track is selected but no audio begins, open Firefox menu ☰ → Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions → Autoplay → Settings…. Find Spotify and choose Allow Audio and Video. Firefox also offers Block Audio and Block Audio and Video; either blocking choice can prevent playback from starting automatically. Details are in Mozilla’s autoplay guidance. Selecting a track yourself may still be required even after permission is granted.
Microsoft Edge on desktop
- Open Settings and more … → Settings.
- Choose Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All permissions → Protected content IDs.
- Turn on Allow sites to play protected content.
- Also turn on Allow identifiers for protected content.
- Reload
https://open.spotify.comand test a track.
Edge uses content-decryption systems such as PlayReady and Widevine. Microsoft notes that disabling either protected-content permission can stop media features from working correctly. Its current privacy documentation is available at Microsoft Edge privacy settings.
On a Windows 10 N edition, Spotify identifies the Media Feature Pack as a requirement for the Web Player because that edition omits certain media technologies. Follow Spotify’s instructions on the Web Player help page to select your language, download the package from Microsoft’s Download Center, choose the matching platform and select Next. Restart the browser after Windows finishes installing the feature.
Safari on a Mac
Safari is supported on desktop. If a track will not begin because Safari prevents automatic media playback, adjust the permission for Spotify:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- With Spotify open, select the Page menu button in Safari’s Smart Search field.
- Choose Website Settings.
- Next to Auto-Play, select Allow All Auto-Play.
- Return to the player and select the track manually.
For a broader rule, use Safari → Settings → Websites → Auto-Play, then choose Spotify or set the value under When visiting other websites. Safari’s choices are Allow All Auto-Play, Stop Media with Sound and Never Auto-Play. Apple describes these controls in its Safari Auto-Play settings guide. An autoplay permission allows media to start when the site requests it; it does not replace selecting a song.

Opera and other supported desktop browsers
Spotify lists Opera alongside Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari as a supported desktop family. Keep Opera on a broadly available release within Spotify’s 30-month baseline, leave protected media enabled, and test with a manually selected track. Menu names can change between Opera releases, so use its settings search for protected content or DRM rather than applying Chrome-only instructions such as chrome://settings/content. If Opera still fails, repeat the general update, private-window, cookie and network checks below, then try another supported browser to separate an Opera profile problem from a service or network restriction.
Using Spotify Web Player on Android and iOS
Spotify now documents Web Player support on specified mobile browser versions, so a phone is not automatically excluded. Open https://open.spotify.com in the supported browser for your operating system and sign in. If the browser is older than the versions in the requirements table, update it through the device’s app store before diagnosing Spotify.
Android
Android 6.0 or newer is required. The supported browser choices are Chrome 87 or later, Samsung Internet 17 or later, and Firefox 115 or later. If the page loads but playback fails, use the same protected-content and cookie checks available in that browser’s desktop settings where applicable. Mobile browsers can also suppress sound when the device is muted, connected to another output, or restricting background activity, so verify the phone’s media volume and selected audio output before changing account settings.
Android’s browser support does not mean every older handset is compatible: both the operating-system version and the browser version must meet Spotify’s thresholds. If one supported browser fails, testing another listed browser is a useful comparison, provided both are updated. A result that changes between browsers points toward a browser permission or profile issue; identical failure across browsers makes a network, device media component or account problem more likely.
iPhone and iPad
Use Chrome 87 or later or Safari 15 or later. In Safari, a site-level autoplay restriction can stop a track from starting until you select it or change the website’s Auto-Play value. In Chrome, check that the tab is not muted and that content-blocking or privacy extensions are not preventing the player from completing its sign-in request.
On iOS, start with a direct visit to open.spotify.com rather than an old bookmark or an embedded link. Sign in, select a track, and confirm the phone’s volume and output destination. If Safari and Chrome show the same protected-content or network error, changing autoplay in only one browser will not resolve it.

How to tell DRM, autoplay, cookies and network errors apart
| Symptom | Most relevant check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “Playback of protected content is not enabled” | Enable Protected content IDs, Play DRM-controlled content, or Edge protected-content permissions | The browser cannot use the content-decryption system required for protected audio. |
| The page loads, but selecting a track produces no start | Allow autoplay, then select the track again; check mute and output controls | Autoplay governs when media may begin and is independent of DRM. |
| Login loops or playlists never appear | Review third-party-cookie and content-blocking settings | The account session may not persist when required cookies are blocked. |
| Spotify works on one network but not another | Finish any captive-portal sign-in and test a permitted home or mobile network | School, work, office and public filters can restrict Spotify services. |
| Settings are greyed out | Contact the device or network administrator | A managed policy may control DRM, cookies or autoplay. |
Troubleshoot a Web Player that opens but will not play
Work through these checks in order. Each step isolates a different failure layer, so changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Update the browser. Open the browser’s Help or About section, install any available update, restart the browser and revisit Spotify. Spotify specifically recommends checking for updates from that menu.
- Try a private or incognito window. Open a private window, go to
https://open.spotify.comand sign in. If playback works there, an extension, cached site data or a normal-window permission is a likely cause. Private mode is a diagnostic, not automatically a permanent solution. - Match the error to DRM. A message about protected content points to the browser-specific DRM steps above. Autoplay changes alone will not repair a missing or blocked content-decryption module.
- Check autoplay. If the interface responds and the progress bar is ready but no sound starts after selecting a track, allow audio and video for Spotify in Firefox or allow autoplay for Spotify in Safari. Also check that the browser tab and operating-system output are not muted.
- Review cookies. If login redirects repeatedly, playlists never load, or the account disappears after closing the tab, inspect third-party-cookie restrictions. Add a Spotify exception only if you are comfortable permitting the required cookie flow.
- Test another network. School, workplace, office and other shared networks can restrict Spotify services. Connect temporarily to a permitted home or mobile network. If the player works there, the browser is probably configured correctly and the network administrator or filtering policy is the next point of contact.
- Use the desktop app as a fallback. Spotify recommends trying its desktop app when the Web Player remains unusable after browser and network checks. This bypasses browser DRM and autoplay settings, although it does not remove an account or network restriction.
Special cases that change the diagnosis
Windows 10 N
Windows 10 N omits media components included in standard Windows editions. For that edition, Spotify requires Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack before the Web Player can provide its media functions. Installing the package is a system-level fix; changing Chrome, Firefox or Edge autoplay settings alone will not supply the missing components.
Managed work or school computers
An employer, school or other administrator can lock browser policies. Chrome notes that users on managed devices may be unable to change some cookie controls. A greyed-out DRM, cookie or autoplay switch indicates a policy rather than a missing Spotify option. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s controls; ask the administrator whether Spotify is permitted or use an approved personal device and network.
Filtered or captive-portal networks
A public network may require a browser sign-in page before external services work, or it may block Spotify domains entirely. Finish the network’s access step first, then reload Spotify. If another network immediately resolves the problem, changing local DRM permissions will not help while the original filtering rule remains.
Private browsing can both help and hinder
Spotify recommends private or incognito mode to rule out extensions and stored data. However, Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito mode. A private window can therefore expose an extension or stale-session problem while simultaneously adding a cookie restriction. Treat the result as evidence about your normal profile, not as proof that private mode is the best everyday setup.
Outdated advice to ignore
- “Spotify requires Flash.” This is obsolete. Current Web Player requirements use modern browsers and their protected-media components; Adobe Flash is not part of Spotify’s instructions.
- “You must download Widevine yourself.” Usually false. Firefox can enable or download the Google Widevine content-decryption module when required, and Spotify’s browser instructions do not ask you to install a separate Widevine package.
- “The Web Player does not work on phones.” Too broad. Spotify documents support for specified Android and iOS browser versions, subject to the operating-system and browser requirements listed above.
- “Only Chrome works.” Incorrect for desktop. Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari.
- “Autoplay settings fix every playback failure.” No. Autoplay controls whether media may begin automatically. A protected-content error requires DRM or the operating system’s media components, while login failures often involve cookies or network access.
When the browser still cannot play Spotify
After updating, testing a clean window, enabling the correct protected-content permission, checking autoplay and cookies, and trying a different network, the remaining causes are usually outside the Web Player page: a managed-device policy, Windows 10 N without its media pack, a network filter, or an account/service issue. Record the exact error text, browser name and version, operating system, and whether another network changed the result before contacting Spotify support. That information distinguishes a local browser setting from a system or network restriction and avoids repeatedly changing unrelated permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to download Spotify Web Player?
No. Open https://open.spotify.com in a supported, updated browser and sign in. There is no separate Web Player installer, Flash package or normal Widevine download.
Which desktop browsers support Spotify Web Player?
Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari. Use a broadly available browser release updated within the previous 30 months.
What does “Playback of protected content is not enabled” mean?
The browser cannot use its protected-media system. Enable Chrome Protected content IDs, Firefox Play DRM-controlled content, or both protected-content permissions in Edge, then reload Spotify.
Why does Spotify load but not start a song?
Autoplay may be blocked, the tab or device may be muted, or audio may be routed to another output. Allow audio and video for Spotify in Firefox or allow all autoplay for the site in Safari, then select the track manually.
Can I use Spotify Web Player on a phone?
Yes, if the device and browser meet Spotify’s requirements: Android 6.0 or later with Chrome 87+, Samsung Internet 17+ or Firefox 115+, or iOS with Chrome 87+ or Safari 15+.
Why does Spotify work at home but not at school or work?
Shared networks can filter Spotify services or require a captive-portal login. Complete the network sign-in and test a permitted home or mobile connection; contact the administrator if filtering remains.
What is required on Windows 10 N?
Spotify requires Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack because Windows 10 N omits certain media technologies. Install it from Microsoft’s Download Center, then restart the browser.

A private window can bypass extensions or stale site data, but Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito mode. Use it as a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed permanent fix.
The Bottom Line
Use a supported browser and open open.spotify.com. If Spotify reports protected content is disabled, enable the browser’s DRM setting; if a selected track remains silent, check autoplay, mute/output controls and cookies. Test a private window and another network, remember the Windows 10 N Media Feature Pack requirement, and use the desktop app when browser troubleshooting cannot overcome a managed device or network restriction.
