You must prepare Steam Offline Mode while Steam is connected. Sign in with Remember me enabled, finish updates, start every game you want to take offline at least once, allow Steam to save your credentials, and then select Steam > Go Offline. Close Steam normally before disconnecting. After that, supported installed games can start without an internet connection.
Steam describes the feature this way: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” It does not make an online-only game work offline, and it does not replace an external launcher or a game’s own authentication service.

What Steam Offline Mode actually does
Offline Mode lets the Steam client use locally stored account and game information instead of contacting the Steam Network. It is intended for situations such as travel, unreliable connectivity, or deliberate disconnection. The feature is a preparation step, not an emergency bypass: Steam must have a successful online session in which it can store the information required for later offline startup.

- A game that requires a persistent internet connection cannot be converted into an offline game by changing the Steam setting.
- A game that starts a separate launcher may still fail if that launcher requires an account check or network connection.
- A library entry showing 100% – Ready is not a sufficient test. Steam or the game can still need a client update, a first-run installation, or an authentication step.
- No accessory, physical product, network adapter, storage drive, or printed manual removes a title’s online or external-launcher requirement.
Prepare Steam before disconnecting
Do this while the computer has a reliable internet connection. If Steam is already displaying a login request, reconnect first; attempting to prepare Offline Mode while disconnected cannot complete the required sign-in step.
1. Sign in with credentials remembered
At the Steam login window, select Remember me before signing in. Offline startup depends on locally stored account information. If you have deliberately disabled credential storage, Steam may not have what it needs to authenticate you without a connection.
2. Finish Steam client updates
Wait for Steam itself to finish updating before preparing the switch. Do not shut down while an update is queued, paused, or applying. A client update that is waiting to install can prevent an otherwise installed game from starting after you disconnect.

Open the Downloads view and allow each intended game to finish downloading, patching, and installing. Check the whole list rather than relying on one title’s library status. If a game has an optional-looking update that Steam has scheduled, let it complete while you are still online.
4. Launch each game once online
Start every game you expect to play during the offline period. Wait until it reaches its normal playable state, not merely its splash screen. This connected launch gives Steam and the game an opportunity to install prerequisites, create configuration files, perform first-run authentication, and complete any setup that cannot happen without a connection. Exit the game normally and repeat for the next title.

If a game opens another launcher, observe that entire process during this test. A successful Steam download does not prove that the separate launcher can start without its own sign-in or network check.
5. Permit credential storage in Steam settings
From the main Steam window, open Steam > Settings > Security. Make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected. This setting is separate from the login-window Remember me choice; both should allow local credential information to be retained.
6. Switch to Offline Mode
Return to the main Steam window and choose Steam > Go Offline. Confirm the change when Steam asks. Let Steam complete the transition rather than immediately terminating the process.
7. Close Steam normally
Use Steam’s normal exit command before shutting down or disconnecting the computer. Steam warns that stored information is needed for Offline Mode and that force-quitting can interfere with that information being preserved. A normal close is therefore part of the preparation, not an optional cleanup step.
How to play after the internet is disconnected
- Start the computer with no network connection, or disconnect after Steam has been closed normally.
- Open Steam. It should enter Offline Mode using the account information saved during preparation.
- Open your Library and select a game that you tested online. Choose Play and wait for the game to finish its local startup.
- Use the game normally. Network features, online matchmaking, and services that require a live connection will not be available.
- When finished, exit the game and close Steam normally if you are ending the session or moving to another computer.
For a trip, test this exact sequence before leaving: disconnect the network, start Steam, launch each planned title, load a save, and exit. Testing while still at home exposes authentication or first-run problems when you can reconnect and fix them.

Which installed games are good candidates for offline play?
Evaluate each title independently. The useful questions are whether the game requires a persistent connection, whether it opens an external launcher, whether all first-run authentication and updates can be completed in advance, and how saving behaves when Steam Cloud is unavailable.

Use a connected test, not a status label
Start the game online, reach an actual save or playable level, exit, switch Steam to Offline Mode, disconnect, and launch again. If it fails at this point, reconnect and correct the cause before relying on it away from home. A title can appear fully installed while still needing an update or an authentication step.
Do not assume every mode is offline-capable
A game may contain both offline and online portions. The offline portion can work while multiplayer, server-hosted progression, cloud-backed features, or account services do not. Read the game’s own startup messages during your test and plan around the functions you actually need.
Steam Cloud, saves, and moving between computers
Steam Cloud does not synchronize while Steam is offline. Progress made during a disconnected session remains in local save files until Steam reconnects. This is expected behavior, but it creates a decision point when the local computer later meets a cloud copy.
What happens when you reconnect
Steam can detect that local progress and the cloud version changed separately. It may display a synchronization conflict and ask which version to keep. Read the timestamps and choose deliberately; accepting the wrong copy can replace newer progress with an older file. If the progress is important, make a separate local backup before resolving the prompt.

Changing computers
Do not assume offline progress will appear automatically on another computer. Cloud synchronization has to occur after reconnection, and a second computer may have its own local save. Reconnect the original computer first, allow Steam Cloud to finish, then check the destination computer before launching the game there.
Safe travel habit
- Finish and exit the game normally before closing Steam.
- Reconnect to the internet on the original computer when practical.
- Let pending Steam Cloud synchronization complete before switching devices.
- When a conflict appears, inspect dates and locations rather than selecting an option automatically.
Troubleshooting Steam Offline Mode
Steam asks you to log in while you are disconnected
Reconnect to the internet and sign in. Steam’s support guidance says there is no way to bypass that login request while disconnected. Once online, enable Remember me, verify the credential-storage setting under Steam > Settings > Security, switch to Offline Mode, and close Steam normally. Then disconnect and test again.
A game says it cannot be started in Offline Mode
- Reconnect the computer.
- Allow Steam to update itself and allow the game to finish every pending update.
- Launch the game online and wait for it to reach its playable state.
- Complete any first-run installation, authentication, or external-launcher step that appears.
- Exit normally, choose Steam > Go Offline, close Steam normally, disconnect, and test the launch again.
If the same message returns, the game may require an active connection or an external service. Steam Offline Mode cannot override that design; choose another title for the disconnected session.
Steam will not enter Offline Mode during preparation
Restore a stable connection and check the basics in this order: Steam server status, the router, and a direct wired connection if available. Review firewall permissions and look for antivirus, ad blockers, proxies, recording utilities, performance boosters, or other background programs that may interfere with Steam’s connection. After connectivity is restored, repeat the update and connected-launch steps rather than switching offline immediately.
The library shows ready, but startup still fails
Treat the connected launch as the authoritative check. Reopen the game online, watch for a prerequisite installer or update, and reach gameplay. Then perform a complete offline test. The 100% – Ready label alone does not guarantee that all local setup and authentication data has been created.

Offline play worked once but not after a restart
Reconnect and repeat the preparation sequence, including a normal Steam shutdown. Confirm that credentials are allowed to be saved and that no client or game update is waiting. A forced quit or an interrupted update can leave Steam without the information needed for the next offline startup.
How long can you stay offline?
Offline Mode does not deliver Steam client or game updates. Reconnect periodically so security fixes, compatibility changes, and required game patches can be installed. Before each new offline trip, repeat the connected update and launch test for the games you intend to use. If a title has changed its authentication or launcher behavior since your last trip, an older preparation may no longer be sufficient.
There is no purchase requirement for this workflow. A Steam account, the installed and fully prepared games, and a successful online preparation session are the relevant prerequisites. Hardware accessories can improve comfort or storage, but they do not alter whether a specific game needs the internet.
A practical pre-travel checklist
- Steam signs in online with Remember me enabled.
- Steam client updates are complete.
- Every intended game is fully updated.
- Every intended game has been launched online to a playable state.
- First-run installers and external-launcher authentication have completed.
- Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected under Steam > Settings > Security.
- Steam > Go Offline has been confirmed.
- Steam has been closed normally.
- With the connection disabled, Steam opens, each game starts, and a local save can be loaded.
- You understand that Steam Cloud will wait until reconnection and may present a conflict afterward.
Returning to online play
Restore the internet connection before starting Steam if it was left fully closed. Open Steam and allow it to reconnect. Let queued client and game updates finish, then allow Steam Cloud to synchronize. If a conflict appears, compare the local and cloud versions before choosing. After synchronization, online services and multiplayer features become available again, subject to each game’s own requirements.
The bottom line
Steam Offline Mode works reliably when it is prepared rather than improvised: sign in and save credentials, update and launch every game online, switch through Steam > Go Offline, and shut down Steam normally. It is suitable for installed games that can authenticate and run locally, but it cannot bypass persistent-online requirements, external launchers, or Steam Cloud synchronization rules.
