Enable the CS2 developer console from Settings → Game → Enable Developer Console (~), change the setting to Yes, then press the default tilde (~) key in-game. On keyboard layouts that place the equivalent key elsewhere, use that layout’s console key instead.

What the CS2 developer console does
Counter-Strike 2’s developer console is a text-based interface for entering commands and changing global game settings. It is separate from the ordinary Settings menus: the menu enables the interface, while the console key opens it during play.

Menu labels and launch-option behavior can change after a major CS2 update. The path and labels below reflect the interface checked on October 14, 2026.

Enable the console through CS2’s Settings
- Launch Counter-Strike 2. Wait until the main menu is visible; you do not need to join a match.
- Open Settings. Select the gear icon in the main menu.
- Choose the Game tab. Do not look under Keyboard/Mouse first; the console-enable control is in the Game section.
- Find “Enable Developer Console (~).” Scroll within the Game settings if the control is not immediately visible.
- Set the control to “Yes.” The setting must read Yes, not No. The change is made with the in-game selector; there is no separate save button specified for this option.
- Return to the game. From the main menu or while connected to a server, press the console key for your keyboard layout.
Valve identifies the tilde (~) key as the default on an English/US keyboard. If the console opens, you should see a text input area over the game. You can close it with the same key or the interface’s normal close behavior and reopen it whenever needed.
Which key opens the console?
English/US keyboards
On a standard English/US layout, the default shortcut is the tilde key (~), located above the Tab key. Because that key commonly shares a physical key with the backtick (`), pressing the key itself may produce either symbol depending on whether Shift is held. Use the key assigned by the game rather than assuming you must type a particular character into the console.

The physical key that corresponds to the console shortcut can differ by language and regional layout. A non-US keyboard may place the equivalent key in another position or produce a different symbol, so pressing the US tilde position may do nothing even though the console is enabled.

If the expected key does not open the interface:
- Confirm that Enable Developer Console (~) is still set to Yes.
- Try the key that occupies the same relative position on your active hardware layout, rather than relying on the printed character.
- Check CS2’s keyboard controls for a console-key binding or Valve’s guidance for changing that key.
- Test while the game window has focus. A browser, chat window, or another application can capture the keystroke instead.
The layout issue is not evidence that the feature failed to enable. It usually means the shortcut’s physical key differs from the English/US default.
Enabling the console versus opening it

Changing the setting to Yes does not automatically leave the console visible. Conversely, pressing the shortcut cannot work reliably while the feature remains set to No.
Community-reported Steam launch options
A Steam Community guide repeats the in-game path and reports that adding -dev and -console to CS2’s Steam launch options can enable the console. This is secondary community guidance, not Valve’s primary procedure.

If you choose to test that fallback, use it only after the ordinary toggle has failed or is unavailable:
- Exit CS2.
- Open the game’s properties in Steam and locate the launch-options field.
- Enter
-dev -consoleas the reported pair of options. - Start CS2 and test the console key.
- If the game behaves unexpectedly, remove both options and return to the in-game setting.
Launch options do not solve a keyboard-layout problem by themselves. Even if they cause the console to be available at startup, you may still need to find the correct physical key for your layout. Because this behavior is community-reported and launch options are update-sensitive, treat the Settings toggle as the supported baseline.
Troubleshooting when the console does not open
The setting is still No
Reopen the gear menu, select Game, and verify the exact control reads Yes. Looking at a different console-related setting or leaving the selector on No will not enable the interface.

The tilde key does nothing
First check the keyboard-layout issue. The default statement applies to English/US configurations; the equivalent key can be elsewhere on another layout. Confirm that CS2 is the active window and that no overlay or text field has focus. Then return to the keyboard controls and identify the assigned console key.

Make sure the key is being pressed while the CS2 window has focus and after the game has finished loading. If another program receives the keystroke, close or minimize that program and try again. Rechecking the enablement toggle rules out an accidental settings change.
The key produces a different symbol
That is normal on many layouts. The printed character is not the important part; the game responds to its assigned key position or binding. Use the layout-specific equivalent or change the binding through CS2’s keyboard controls.

The launch-option fallback did not help
Remove the options, restart CS2, and use the official Settings → Game procedure. The launch-option report comes from a community guide and may not match every current build. Do not assume that adding more undocumented options will repair the issue.
The console was enabled but is no longer visible
Press the assigned key again. Enabling the feature only permits the interface; it does not force the panel to remain on screen. If the key stopped working after changing keyboards or layouts, repeat the layout and binding checks above.
How to verify that it is working
- Open Settings → Game and confirm Enable Developer Console (~) is Yes.
- Return to a focused CS2 window.
- Press the English/US tilde key or your layout’s equivalent.
- Look for the console’s text input/output panel.
- Close it and reopen it once more to confirm the shortcut is repeatable.
This verification checks both stages: the feature is enabled and the correct key reaches CS2. You do not need to enter a command merely to prove that the panel opened.
Using the console safely
The console accepts text commands and can change global game settings, so read a command’s purpose before submitting it. Enablement itself does not alter gameplay settings; changes occur when you enter commands or otherwise use the interface.
- Keep the console key accessible if you need to inspect output during a session.
- When troubleshooting, change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affected the game.
- If a setting produces an unwanted result, return to the relevant game menu or undo the command according to that command’s documented behavior.
- Do not treat a community launch option as an official requirement when the in-game toggle is available.

What to remember
The complete supported sequence is short: open CS2, select the gear icon, go to Game, set Enable Developer Console (~) to Yes, and press the console key. The tilde key is the default only for English/US keyboards; other layouts may require a different physical key or an updated binding. If the setting is enabled but the shortcut still fails, check focus, layout, and the assigned key before trying the community-reported launch options.
