Enable the gd PHP extension in the PHP runtime serving your WordPress site, then verify it in Dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling. That screen reports the active image editor, the GD version, and the formats compiled into the running PHP installation. If Imagick is active, WordPress may use it instead of GD; changing a WordPress setting cannot load a missing PHP extension.

What the GD image library does in WordPress
GD is a PHP graphics extension that WordPress can use to resize, crop, rotate and otherwise process images. WordPress connects GD through the WP_Image_Editor_GD class. Image uploads, generated thumbnails and edits in the Media Library depend on an image editor that is available in the web server’s PHP runtime.

WordPress documentation describes GD as included by default since PHP 4.3, so it is present on many hosting environments. “Included by default” does not mean that every current hosting account has the extension loaded: providers can disable extensions, install several PHP versions with different modules, or prevent customers from editing the PHP configuration.
WordPress can also use Imagick. When Imagick is selected and working, GD may be installed but not be the editor handling your images. The relevant question is therefore not only whether a server has GD files, but whether the PHP process used by WordPress has a working gd extension and whether WordPress selected it.

Check whether WordPress already sees GD
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator dashboard.
- Open Tools > Site Health.
- Select the Info tab.
- Expand Media Handling.
- Read the entries for the active image editor, GD version and supported formats.
Site Health is the authoritative check for this site because it examines the PHP runtime used by the WordPress web request. It is more useful than checking a command-line PHP installation or looking for a library file in a server directory.
If the report names GD and displays a version, the extension is loaded. The supported-format list is equally important: it shows what that specific GD build can manipulate. Do not assume that JPEG, PNG, WebP or another format is available simply because GD exists.

- An image editor is listed rather than an error saying that no editor is available.
- The Media Handling section includes a GD version when GD is the active editor or available to WordPress.
- Supported formats reflect the formats compiled into that installation.
- A normal Media Library upload can create the expected image sizes.
When the report names Imagick
If Site Health identifies Imagick as the active editor, WordPress is currently processing images through Imagick. GD can still be installed as a fallback, but enabling it will not necessarily change the active editor. Use the reported editor and format list when diagnosing an upload or thumbnail problem.
Enable GD when you control the PHP installation
The extension must be enabled in the PHP runtime that serves the website. The exact file and service-reload procedure varies by operating system, PHP version, PHP handler and hosting provider, so there is no single control-panel sequence that applies everywhere.

Linux and other builds configured from source
PHP’s build option changed in PHP 7.4.0. Older documentation may show --with-gd; PHP 7.4 and later use --enable-gd to enable the extension. PHP also documents --with-external-gd when a build should use an external libgd rather than PHP’s bundled GD.
Those options are build-time settings, not WordPress settings. A PHP administrator must rebuild or install a PHP package that contains GD, then make sure the web-server PHP handler uses that build. If several PHP versions are installed, enabling GD for one version does not enable it for the others.

Windows PHP installations
On Windows, load the GD extension through php.ini. For PHP 8.0 and later, the DLL is named php_gd.dll. Before PHP 8.0, the file was named php_gd2.dll. The name in the configuration must match the DLL supplied with that PHP version.
After changing php.ini, reload the PHP process used by the website if the environment requires it. A command-line PHP process may read a different configuration file from the web server, so a successful command-line check does not prove that WordPress can use GD.

Account for GD’s format dependencies
GD’s capabilities depend on the GD version and the libraries linked into the PHP build. PHP’s requirements documentation specifies libgd 2.1.0 or higher, or PHP’s bundled GD, and notes a zlib requirement of at least 1.2.0.4. These dependencies affect which formats are compiled in and available to applications.
WordPress exposes the practical result in Site Health. Treat the supported-format list as the final answer for the running site instead of relying on a generic list of formats from a tutorial. Two servers can both report GD while offering different format support because they were built with different libraries or options.

Why one format may fail while another works
A site can successfully process one image type and fail on another when the corresponding support was not compiled into GD. For example, a working JPEG thumbnail does not establish that WebP support exists. Check the Media Handling list before changing WordPress code or replacing an image.
Reload PHP after the change
PHP configuration changes are not always picked up by an already-running service. Reload or restart the PHP service, PHP handler or hosting application according to the operating system and provider’s instructions. The correct action depends on whether the site uses a module, a FastCGI process, a pool manager or a managed platform; use the provider’s documented procedure rather than applying an unrelated command.

On managed or shared hosting, customers often cannot edit php.ini or restart the PHP handler. In that case, ask support to enable the gd extension for the exact PHP version and handler assigned to the WordPress site. Include the domain, PHP version shown by the host and the Site Health Media Handling result so support can check the correct runtime.
Verify GD with a real WordPress operation
- Return to Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling and confirm that the expected editor, GD version and formats are now shown.
- Open Media > Add New and upload a normal image in a format listed as supported.
- Open the uploaded item and use an available image edit operation, such as a crop or rotation.
- Check the attachment’s generated sizes and confirm that the edited result saves without an editor or memory error.
This test checks the complete path: the web PHP runtime, WordPress’s editor selection, GD’s compiled format support and the site’s ability to write the generated files. A configuration change is not complete until this path works.
Troubleshoot a “GD library missing” message
Site Health does not list GD
First determine whether another editor is active. If Imagick is listed, GD may simply not be the selected editor. If no usable editor is listed, the gd extension is either absent, disabled or unavailable to the web PHP process.
WordPress core checks that the gd extension is loaded and that gd_info() exists before selecting WP_Image_Editor_GD. If those checks fail, installing a plugin or changing a Media Library setting cannot enable GD. The PHP runtime or hosting account must be changed.

GD was enabled for the wrong PHP runtime
A common mismatch occurs when GD is enabled for the PHP binary used in a terminal but not for the PHP handler serving HTTP requests. Recheck Site Health after the change. If the web report is unchanged, ask the provider which PHP version and handler execute the site and request GD for that runtime.
The extension is enabled but the site still reports the old state
- Confirm that the edited
php.inibelongs to the web PHP process, not only the command-line process. - Check that the configured DLL name matches the PHP version on Windows.
- Reload or restart the relevant PHP service or handler.
- Verify that the hosting account permits the extension for the selected PHP version.
- Reopen Site Health after the service has reloaded.
Only certain image formats fail
Inspect the supported-format list under Media Handling. If the failing format is absent, the GD build lacks the required support or linked library. The remedy is a PHP/GD build that includes the needed capability, or an alternative active editor that supports the format. Do not describe the problem as a completely missing GD library when GD is present but format support is limited.

Confirm that the active editor is still available and that the source format appears in the supported list. If the editor changed after a PHP update, Site Health will show the new selection. If GD is active and the format is listed, provide the exact WordPress error and hosting PHP details to the provider; the remaining cause may be a server resource or file-permission problem rather than extension loading.
GD and Imagick: what WordPress is actually comparing
GD and Imagick are PHP image editors that WordPress can select. The practical comparison for a site owner is availability in the active PHP runtime and the formats that the selected build reports, not a universal claim that one is always faster or uses less memory.

WordPress may use Imagick even when GD is installed. Conversely, GD can be the available fallback when Imagick is absent. Base the decision on the editor that Site Health reports and on the formats your site actually needs.
Managed and shared hosting: the support request to send
When the host controls PHP, a concise request prevents the most common back-and-forth. Ask support to:
- Confirm the PHP version and handler serving the WordPress site.
- Enable the
gdextension for that exact runtime. - Confirm that
gd_info()is available. - Report the GD version and compiled image formats.
- Reload the PHP service and tell you when the change is active.
After support responds, verify the result in WordPress Site Health rather than relying only on the support message. If the report still lacks GD, send a screenshot or copied Media Handling output and ask the provider to check for a different PHP runtime behind the web server.
