Complete the verification prompt and check that Epic reports the method as active.
Enable 2FA on the Epic account linked to Fortnite
- Sign in to the Epic Games account connected to the Fortnite profile you want to protect.
- Open Account, then go to Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up beside your preferred method.
- Complete the verification prompt. Depending on the method, enter a code sent by email or SMS, enter the code generated by an authenticator app, or approve the number-match prompt in Epic Authenticator.
- Wait for Epic’s success confirmation, then make sure the method appears as active on the account page. Epic also says it sends a confirmation email.
- If you set up more than one method, use the three-dot menu beside the one you want to use by default and select Make my primary 2FA method.
There is no Fortnite gameplay-menu switch for 2FA; it is managed in Epic account settings. Epic’s instructions are on its 2FA setup page.

Choose a method you can access reliably
Epic lists four options. Which one is right depends on whether you can consistently reach the app, email inbox, or phone number that receives the verification.
| Method | Where approval or code comes from | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Authenticator | Built into the Epic Games and Epic Games Store apps. | Use it if you can access the relevant Epic app when signing in. Epic’s methods page describes number matching for approval. |
| Third-party authenticator app | A code generated by an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, LastPass Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy. | Choose an app you can access and make a plan for recovery if the device is lost or unavailable. |
| A code sent to the email address on the Epic account. | Make sure you can sign in to that inbox. Securing the account email is also part of Epic’s broader account-security advice. | |
| SMS | A code sent to the associated phone number. | SMS is not supported for every region or number. If setup is unavailable, choose another listed method. |
See Epic’s current list of available 2FA methods for details. Epic recommends authenticator apps and advises having at least two authentication methods enabled when possible, so a second route remains available if one is inaccessible.

Why enable 2FA for Fortnite?
Epic says 2FA adds a second sign-in step: someone who learns your password still needs the second factor to access the account. Epic also lists 2FA as required for sending Fortnite gifts and participating in Fortnite competitive events. Its support page additionally says it is required to claim some free Epic Games Store games. Check Epic’s 2FA article for the current details.
If Fortnite still says 2FA is inactive
Check that you updated the right Epic account
Fortnite may be connected to a different Epic account than the one where you enabled 2FA. Sign in to the Epic account actually linked to the Fortnite profile, then check Account > Password and security to confirm the method is active.

Finish setting up a console-linked account
Epic says some console-only users may need to complete account setup by adding an email address. Follow the account-setup route associated with your console sign-in, then enable 2FA on that account. Epic outlines these cases in its Fortnite 2FA troubleshooting article.
If SMS is unavailable
Some regions or phone numbers are not supported for SMS 2FA. Select Epic Authenticator, another authenticator app, or email if that option is available for your account.

- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

If a code does not arrive
Check which method you selected and confirm you can access the email address or phone number associated with it. Epic has separate support guidance for available methods; the cause of a delivery problem depends on the selected method, account, and region.
Recover access if your authenticator or phone is unavailable
At the 2FA prompt, select Try another way. Epic documents email verification and an eight-digit backup code as recovery options when an authenticator or phone cannot be used. Its instructions are in Epic’s account recovery guidance for 2FA lockouts. If you rely on one phone for codes, enable a second method while you still have access to the account.

Protect the account beyond 2FA
Epic also recommends using a unique password, considering a password manager to generate and store it, securing the email account linked to Epic, and enabling 2FA on linked console or social accounts that can be used to access Epic. These are additional account-security measures, not prerequisites for turning on Epic 2FA. See Epic’s account-security guidance.
