To enable Xbox Full Screen Experience on a Windows 11 desktop, install the latest available Windows and Xbox updates, enable “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” under Windows Update, restart if prompted, and press Win + F11. Because the rollout is gradual and limited by market and device availability, the shortcut may do nothing until Microsoft enables the feature for your PC.

Important availability note: Xbox mode is being rolled out gradually to Windows 11 PCs, including desktops, laptops, and tablets, in select markets. It may not be available on your computer yet even when Windows is fully updated.

Enable Xbox mode on a normal Windows 11 installation
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Install every offered Windows update and any Xbox-related updates.
- Restart the PC if Windows requests it.
- After the feature reaches your device, press Win + F11 to open Xbox mode.
You may also find an Xbox mode or full-screen-experience entry in the Xbox app, in Game Bar > Settings, or from Task View. The wording can differ between Windows builds because Microsoft has moved from the name “Xbox full screen experience” to “Xbox mode.”

What Xbox mode does
Xbox mode replaces the ordinary desktop view with a full-screen, controller-optimized gaming interface. It brings together access to Xbox and Game Pass titles, Xbox Play Anywhere games, and installed games from other popular PC storefronts.
The aim is to reduce desktop distractions while keeping the flexibility of a Windows PC. You can still switch between games and other applications rather than being permanently locked into a console-style environment.
Xbox mode is separate from a game’s own display setting. Choosing fullscreen, borderless, or windowed mode in a game changes how that game renders. Xbox mode changes the Windows gaming shell used to browse and launch games.

First, do not assume that your desktop is unsupported. Microsoft’s production rollout is gradual and market-dependent, so two otherwise similar Windows 11 PCs may receive the feature at different times.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update.
- Confirm that Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is enabled.
- Install all available updates and restart.
- Try Win + F11 again.
- Check the Xbox app, Game Bar > Settings, and Win + Tab for an Xbox mode or full screen experience entry.
If none of those locations shows the feature, the most likely explanation is that Microsoft has not enabled it for your device, account cohort, or market yet. The production rollout announcement does not provide a complete country-by-country or build-by-build availability list.
There is no documented, supported registry switch or standalone installation package for forcing Xbox mode onto a production desktop. Avoid registry hacks, unofficial packages, and sideloaded components presented as activation methods.

Use the Windows Insider preview only if you accept preview software
If Xbox mode is unavailable on your normal Windows 11 build, an Insider preview may expose the desktop experience earlier. This is not the same as enabling the stable production feature, and it can make Windows less reliable.
The documented preview route requires participation in both the Xbox Insider and Windows Insider programs:
- Install or open Xbox Insider Hub.
- Open Previews, select PC Gaming Preview, and choose Join.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Get started.
- Link the Microsoft account used for Xbox Insider registration.
- Choose a supported Insider channel, accept the terms, and restart when Windows prompts you.
- Keep Windows updated and watch for the Xbox-related preview experience.
The first documented desktop preview was distributed through the Windows Insider Dev and Beta channels, beginning with preview build 26220.7271 on November 21, 2025. That does not guarantee that every later Insider build, channel, account, or region will expose the feature.
Before joining Windows Insider: back up important files and understand how to leave the program or recover Windows. Microsoft warns that Insider builds can be less stable than production releases, are not serviced in the same way, and may eventually expire. Use the preview route only on a PC where those trade-offs are acceptable.
Pair an Xbox controller for the intended experience
Xbox mode is designed primarily for controller navigation. A controller is recommended for the full experience, but the published enablement steps do not make controller ownership a prerequisite for activating Xbox mode.
If you want controller-first navigation, an Xbox Wireless Controller for Windows 11 can connect over Bluetooth. Microsoft also documents compatible USB-C connectivity for the current Xbox Wireless Controller.
Pair over Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.
For wired play, use a compatible Xbox controller USB-C cable. Compatibility matters: Microsoft documents USB-C connectivity for the controller, but not every USB-C cable necessarily supports every controller feature or use case.
The Xbox Accessories app can handle supported button-mapping functions. Microsoft notes that its Windows button-mapping workflow requires a compatible USB-C cable. A desktop without suitable Bluetooth hardware may need a compatible adapter, but an adapter is not automatically required for every PC.

Open Xbox mode from each supported entry point
- Keyboard shortcut: press Win + F11.
- Xbox app: use the Xbox mode entry point when it appears.
- Game Bar: open Game Bar, go to Settings, and select the Xbox mode or full-screen-experience option.
- Task View: press Win + Tab and choose Xbox mode or Xbox full screen experience.
If a menu says “Xbox full screen experience” while another says “Xbox mode,” those labels refer to the same general controller-first desktop gaming interface in the relevant Windows build.

Leave Xbox mode and return to the desktop
You do not need to reboot simply to switch back to Windows. Use any of these methods:
- Press the Windows key.
- Press Win + Tab, then select the ordinary Windows desktop.
- Open Game Bar and exit through its Xbox mode or full-screen-experience settings.
Microsoft also documents switching between open games and apps with a long press of the Xbox button on a connected controller, or the corresponding keyboard control.

The feature is missing after Windows Update
Check that the latest-updates toggle is enabled, install everything offered, and restart. If the entry is still absent, the rollout may not have reached your market, device, or account yet. Do not use an unofficial package or registry modification to force it.
A shortcut behaves differently in Xbox mode
Some keyboard and controller shortcuts intentionally behave differently inside the gaming interface, including shortcuts associated with showing the desktop or searching. Use the documented exit methods—Windows key, Task View, or Game Bar—rather than assuming every ordinary desktop shortcut will work identically.
An application opens incorrectly
Early PC previews included issues with applications that expect fixed window sizes or launch additional windows. If an application does not display correctly, leave Xbox mode and launch or use it from the ordinary Windows desktop. Updating to a newer supported Windows build may also help, but preview behavior can change between builds.

The virtual keyboard does not appear
In an early preview, Microsoft reported that controller users on non-touchscreen devices might not see the virtual keyboard. Keep a physical keyboard connected as a workaround. This was documented as a preview issue and should not automatically be treated as a permanent limitation of the production experience.
The controller will not pair
Confirm that the controller is on, hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes, and verify that Bluetooth is enabled under Settings > Bluetooth & devices. If the PC has no suitable Bluetooth hardware, use a compatible wired USB-C connection or hardware appropriate for the controller. Remember that pairing a controller is for navigation and play; it is not the documented requirement for receiving Xbox mode through Windows Update.
Production rollout or Insider preview?

For most people, the correct path is to stay on the production build, enable the latest-updates option, and wait until Xbox mode appears. Choose the Insider path only when early access is worth the additional stability and recovery risk.
