Enable Xbox Game Bar
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Type Xbox into the Settings search box.
- Select Enable Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the toggle that allows Xbox Game Bar to open. If available, also enable the option to open it with the Xbox button on a connected controller.
- Open a game or compatible app and press Windows key + G.
Microsoft’s current instructions use Settings search because the wording and location can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. You can also try Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and enable the toggle there. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar instructions for the current labels.

What Xbox Game Bar does
Xbox Game Bar is a Windows gaming overlay, not an Xbox console setting or the Xbox app itself. It provides widgets and controls for recording gameplay or supported apps, taking screenshots, managing microphone and audio, viewing performance information, and using Xbox-related social features.

How to check that it is working
Start a game or supported app, then press Windows key + G. The Game Bar overlay and its widgets should appear over the app. If the shortcut does nothing, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Xbox Game Bar keyboard shortcuts

These are the default shortcuts. Game Bar settings may allow you to change or disable them.
How to record a game or app
- Open the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R to start recording.
- Press Windows key + Alt + M if you want to turn microphone recording on or off.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R again to stop.
Videos are generally saved as MP4 files in Videos > Captures. Game Bar screenshots are generally saved there as PNG files as well.

Include system audio
Press Windows key + G, open the Settings widget, and select Capturing. Choose the audio option that includes all relevant computer sounds, such as All when that label is available. Check the microphone setting separately; enabling Game Bar does not automatically guarantee the audio mix you want.

Xbox Game Bar is enabled but will not open
- Confirm the toggle. Search Settings for Enable Xbox Game Bar, or check Settings > Gaming > Game Bar.
- Test inside an app. Open a game or compatible application before pressing Windows key + G; Game Bar is intended to appear over supported games and apps.
- Check the Windows key. Gaming software, keyboard firmware, or a physical Windows-key lock can disable the shortcut. Test with the on-screen setting and, if possible, another keyboard.
- Update Windows. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Update Store apps. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates.
- Repair the app. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Xbox Game Bar, open its advanced options, and choose Repair. Use Reset only if Repair fails. Menu names can vary by Windows build.
- Check restrictions. A work, school, or family-managed PC may block gaming features or remove the setting intentionally. Contact the administrator rather than bypassing the policy.
If Xbox Game Bar is missing or damaged, check Microsoft Store for the official app and its updates. Avoid downloading it from unofficial websites.
Fix Xbox Game Bar on Windows N
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies. Microsoft says related Xbox functionality, including Game Bar and Game DVR, may not work until you install the Media Feature Pack.

Install the Media Feature Pack through Windows’ optional features or the Microsoft-provided instructions, restart the PC, then check Microsoft Store for Xbox Game Bar and install or update it if necessary. The restart is required to complete the media-component installation.
Game Bar versus Xbox mode
Xbox Game Bar and Xbox mode are different features. Game Bar is the overlay opened with Windows key + G. Xbox mode is a newer Windows gaming experience, particularly relevant to supported handheld PCs, with its own setting under Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode. Microsoft documents Xbox mode separately and says it requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets.

Windows 10 compatibility
Microsoft documentation covers Xbox Game Bar on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. It may still run Game Bar, but it no longer receives standard free Windows Update support and security fixes.
