Quick answer: Go to Settings > Windows Update, turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they are available, install the available updates, and restart if prompted. Then press Win + F11 to open Xbox mode.
Microsoft originally called this feature Xbox Full Screen Experience. In newer Windows 11 releases, Microsoft refers to it as Xbox mode. The feature is rolling out gradually, so updating Windows does not guarantee that the option will appear immediately on every PC.

What Xbox mode does
Xbox mode is a controller-first, full-screen gaming interface built into Windows 11. It puts Xbox games, Game Pass titles, Xbox Play Anywhere games, and installed games from supported PC storefronts in a gaming-focused view instead of making the Windows desktop your starting point.

It is an interface layer running on Windows, not a separate Xbox operating system. You can still switch to the ordinary desktop, open other apps, and launch games through their original storefronts and launchers.

Microsoft says the rollout began in select markets on April 30, 2026, for Windows 11 laptops, desktops, tablets, and Windows gaming handhelds, with availability expanding over time. See the official Xbox mode rollout announcement.
Before you start
- A PC or supported handheld running Windows 11.
- An internet connection for Windows and Microsoft Store updates.
- The Xbox app installed and updated through the Microsoft Store.
- The Microsoft account you use for Xbox or Game Pass.
- A controller is recommended for the intended console-style experience, but it is not necessarily required.
Game Pass is optional. You need an eligible membership to play Game Pass catalog titles, but you do not need Game Pass merely to enable Xbox mode.
How to turn on Xbox mode
1. Update Windows 11
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they are available.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available Windows 11 update.
- Restart the PC if Windows asks you to.
Microsoft recommends enabling that update setting to receive Xbox mode as soon as it becomes available to your device. Because the rollout is phased and market-dependent, the feature may still be absent after a successful update.
2. Update the Xbox app
Open the Microsoft Store, go to its app update area, and install any available Xbox app update. The Xbox app was explicitly required for the earlier PC preview, and keeping it current is a sensible maintenance step for the released experience. 3. Use the keyboard shortcut
Press:
Win + F11On supported builds where the feature has reached the PC, this opens Xbox mode. The shortcut was documented for the Full Screen Experience preview, so the exact behavior or label can vary while Microsoft transitions from the older FSE name to Xbox mode.
4. Try the other entry points
If Win + F11 does nothing, try these routes:
- Xbox app: Open the app and look for the Xbox mode or full-screen experience control.
- Game Bar: Press Win + G, open Settings, and look for the Xbox mode/full-screen control.
- Task View: Press Win + Tab and select Xbox mode or Xbox full-screen experience if it is listed.
- Gaming settings: Open Settings > Gaming. Older builds exposed the feature as Full screen experience; newer builds may use Xbox mode or a different label.
These labels are build-dependent. An older guide that says “Full Screen Experience” may still describe the same feature.
How to exit Xbox mode
You do not need to restart Windows to leave Xbox mode. Use any of these methods:

- Press Win + Tab to open Task View, then select the Windows desktop or another open app.
- Open Game Bar > Settings and use the available exit control.
- Use the task switcher to move to another app or game.
- On supported controller configurations, long-press the Xbox button to open the task-switching interface.

Which games appear in Xbox mode?
The interface can bring together:
- Xbox PC games.
- Game Pass PC games, when included with your membership.
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles.
- Installed games from supported third-party PC storefronts.
Supported third-party games may still depend on their original launcher, account, digital rights management, and update system. Xbox mode does not turn every Windows game into an Xbox-native title, and Microsoft does not promise that every storefront or installed game will appear.

Hide storefronts you do not use

- Open the Xbox app.
- Select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Library & Extensions.
- Turn off the storefronts you want to hide.
If a game is missing, confirm that it is installed, let the Xbox app finish indexing, update the relevant launcher, and check that the storefront is enabled in Library & Extensions. A title that is not detected can still often be launched from its original storefront.

Xbox mode missing: troubleshooting checklist
“I updated Windows, but there is no option”
- Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11.
- Run Windows Update again and leave Get the latest updates as soon as they are available enabled.
- Update the Xbox app in the Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Win + F11, Win + Tab, Win + G > Settings, and Settings > Gaming.
- Check whether the feature has reached your market and device.
If the option is missing everywhere, the most likely explanation is that the phased rollout has not reached the PC or that the current Windows build does not expose it yet. Do not treat registry edits, unofficial scripts, or third-party launchers as a normal activation requirement.
“Win + F11 does nothing”
The feature may not be installed or enabled on the current build. A utility may also be intercepting the shortcut, or keyboard-remapping software may have changed its behavior. Try Win + Tab first, then Win + G > Settings and Settings > Gaming. Some builds may expose the feature through a menu rather than the shortcut.
“My desktop shortcuts behave differently”
That can be expected. Microsoft designed the full-screen experience to keep the interface focused on gaming, so some desktop and search shortcuts behave differently while it is active. Press the Windows key or use Task View to return to Windows.
Older Insider guides and the name change
The 2025 preview was called Xbox Full Screen Experience or FSE. Microsoft’s preview instructions required Xbox Insider and Windows Insider enrollment for that testing phase. That does not mean Insider enrollment is a universal requirement for the broader 2026 rollout, which Microsoft describes as being delivered through ordinary Windows updates.

Older Insider builds also documented handheld-specific controls under Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience, including options for making Xbox the home app or opening it at startup. Those controls may not be present on a standard desktop installation and should not be confused with the basic activation steps.
Who should use Xbox mode?
Xbox mode is a good fit if you primarily play with a controller, use a TV or docked laptop, game on a tablet or handheld, or want quick access to recently played games with fewer desktop distractions. It is also useful if you want one gaming-focused front end for Xbox titles and games from supported PC storefronts.
It may be less useful if you mainly play with a keyboard and mouse, frequently need desktop utilities while gaming, require every launcher to be integrated, or want a highly customized replacement for a launcher such as Steam Big Picture or Playnite. It also does not establish a general FPS or latency improvement on ordinary Windows 11 PCs; its main benefit is navigation and presentation.

A controller is not mandatory, but it best matches the interface’s design. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller is the natural first-party option for desktop, laptop, tablet, TV, and handheld use. Check current compatibility and pricing before buying, since those details are separate from Xbox mode’s availability.
