How to Equip and Change Character Skins in Invincible VS

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change a fighter’s appearance in Invincible VS, open the mode’s character-selection or loadout screen, highlight the character, and choose an owned color variant or alternate costume before starting the match. Community guidance reports using left and right to cycle recolors and down to open alternate costumes, but the exact prompt can differ by platform, remapped controls, or game build.

If a skin is locked, it must be earned through Character or Player progression, a specified mode, or a seasonal challenge. Deluxe cosmetics require the corresponding platform add-on to be downloaded; installing the game alone does not always install the bonus content.

Change a skin from character select

The appearance change is made before a match, not from a mid-match pause menu. Use this sequence for the mode you are about to play:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enter character selection or loadout. From the main menu, choose the mode and continue until the fighter-selection screen appears.
  2. Highlight the fighter. Move the selection cursor to the character whose appearance you want to change. Skins are character-specific, so selecting a different fighter changes which cosmetic list is available.
  3. Cycle color variants. Community reports describe using left and right to move through recolors while the character is highlighted. Stop on a variant you own.
  4. Open alternate costumes. Community guidance describes pressing down to reach the alternate-costume entries. If your current build shows an on-screen prompt instead, follow that prompt; controls may be remapped or differ by platform.
  5. Confirm the selection. Accept the owned variant or costume, then proceed to the match. A locked entry cannot be equipped until its requirement is met or the related add-on is installed.
  6. Verify the result in the pre-match preview. If the preview still shows the default outfit, return to the cosmetic list and check that you confirmed the selection rather than merely highlighted it.

The left/right/down sequence is practical community guidance, not a complete universal button map published by the developer. If those inputs do nothing, look for the current button legend on the character-select screen, check your control-remapping menu, and test the selection in another mode.

Color variants and alternate costumes are different slots

Color variants

A color variant changes the palette of the standard model. It remains the same underlying outfit and is normally presented beside the default color in the character-select carousel. Progression can award these variants through Character Mastery or other cosmetic challenges.

Alternate costumes

An alternate costume is a distinct outfit entry. Story Mode rewards include alternate costumes, and premium or Deluxe products can also add full costumes. Because the entry belongs to a particular character, an outfit purchased or earned for one fighter does not transfer to another.

When comparing two entries, check the label and preview rather than assuming every thumbnail is a new costume. Some entries are recolors, while others replace the outfit model. Both are equipped from the same pre-match cosmetic area.

How cosmetics are unlocked

Skybound Support identifies two primary routes: leveling Character or Player levels and completing specific modes. Playing matches contributes to leveling, while selected modes award their own cosmetic rewards.

Character Mastery

Character Mastery is the fighter-specific progression track. The progression information for Invincible VS states that it contains 20 rewards plus 3 Prestige Rewards, including skins and color variants. To work toward a particular fighter’s cosmetics, play matches with that fighter and then inspect the Mastery track for the next requirement.

  • Mastery rewards are tied to the character being progressed.
  • The track can include both full skins and color variants.
  • Prestige rewards are separate from the 20 standard rewards.
  • Once a reward is earned, it can be viewed through Extras > Collection.

Player Level

Player-level progression is account-wide rather than tied to one fighter. It can award badges, titles, backgrounds, art, music, arenas, and frames. Those rewards affect your profile or presentation, not necessarily a character’s outfit, so do not expect every Player Level reward to appear in the character-skin carousel.

Mode-specific rewards

Arcade Ladders, Story Mode, and Ranked Mode can award cosmetics. Story Mode specifically includes alternate costumes. If a skin description names a mode, complete that mode’s stated requirement rather than relying only on general match experience.

Named Season One rewards

The June 30, 2026 Season One patch notes list several examples of mode- and difficulty-based skins. These rewards are tied to the season wording in the notes and should be treated as time-sensitive.

Skin Character Requirement listed for Season One Type of requirement
Invincicast Invincible Complete 10 Ranked matches in Season One Ranked participation
Rex Sloan Rex Splode Complete an Invincible Ladder during Season One or later Arcade Ladder completion
Mark Grayson Invincible Complete Story Mode on Viltrumite difficulty during Season One or later Story difficulty clear

The table describes the requirements as published in those patch notes; it does not establish a drop rate or a guaranteed completion time. If the reward is not appearing, confirm that the challenge was completed on the correct account and that the game has recorded the required mode or difficulty.

Season Two changes and time-limited content

Season Two patch notes published October 13, 2026 announce additional premium and earnable cosmetics. They also document a Character Select fix affecting Titan’s Stone Skin Armor. If Titan’s armor appears incorrectly, update to the current build before troubleshooting your controls or account.

Season rewards can be available only during a stated season, can be extended by later notes, or can use wording such as “Season One or later.” Read the requirement attached to the individual reward. Do not assume that a Season One challenge remains available merely because the cosmetic is still visible in a collection menu.

Deluxe Edition skins: installation and verification

Skybound lists Conquest — Breakout and Allen the Alien — C.O.P. as Deluxe bonus skins. The support instruction is to download the add-ons associated with the Deluxe Edition from your platform store.

  1. Open the store for the platform on which you own the Deluxe Edition.
  2. Find the game’s add-on or manage-content section.
  3. Download each Deluxe add-on listed for your edition. Owning the base game or a Deluxe entitlement does not always install every add-on automatically.
  4. Wait for the platform to finish installing the content, then fully close and restart the game.
  5. Return to character selection, highlight Conquest or Allen the Alien, and check the alternate-costume list.

If the add-on is installed but the skin remains absent, sign in to the purchasing account, confirm that the edition and platform match, restore or refresh licenses using the platform’s account tools, and revisit character selection after restarting. Skybound’s support guidance is to contact support if the Deluxe content is still missing after downloading the associated add-ons.

Paid costume add-ons

Storefront listings can contain separate costume purchases in addition to earned and Deluxe cosmetics. A PlayStation listing names add-ons such as Undercover and Overdressed, Double Dimensions, Battle Beast, Rex Splode — Towel, Bots & Monsters, Honest Abe, Diamond, Streetwear, and GDA Prisoner, along with other character skins.

These products are platform-store purchases, not universal unlocks for every account. Availability and prices can vary by region and can change over time. Before buying, check the listing’s supported platform, the character named in the product title, and whether it is a color variant or a distinct costume. After purchase, download the add-on if the store presents it separately, restart the game, and look under that character’s cosmetic entries.

Gameplay-earned versus paid or Deluxe skins

What to do when a skin is locked

Read the lock text first

Select the locked entry and read its requirement. It may point to Character Mastery, Player Level, a mode, a difficulty, a Ranked-match count, or a seasonal challenge. The lock message is more useful than repeatedly pressing the skin-cycle buttons.

Check the correct progression track

If the requirement names a fighter, open that character’s Mastery rather than the account Player Level screen. If it names a profile item, arena, or frame, inspect Player Level or Collection instead; those rewards are not character outfits.

Confirm mode and difficulty

For a Story reward such as Mark Grayson, the listed condition is a Viltrumite-difficulty clear. Finishing Story Mode on an easier setting does not satisfy that stated requirement. Likewise, the Invincicast example requires 10 Ranked matches, while Rex Sloan requires completion of an Invincible Ladder.

Refresh the entitlement

For Deluxe or purchased content, verify the add-on download, account, edition, and platform. Close the game completely after installation and reopen character selection. A skin can remain hidden until the game refreshes its entitlement data.

Inspect Collection

Use Extras > Collection to see earned items. Collection confirms whether an item has been awarded even when the character-select carousel is filtered or the wrong fighter is highlighted.

Controls, platform differences, and remapping

The exact skin-switch prompt is not documented as one universal control map in the official material. Community guidance commonly describes left and right for color cycling and down for alternate costumes, but those directions can change when controls are remapped or when a platform uses a different layout.

  • Look at the button legend shown on the current character-select screen.
  • Check the game’s control settings for custom bindings before assuming the feature is broken.
  • Use the directional input while the fighter is highlighted, not while the cursor is on a stage, assist, or confirmation button.
  • If a directional press moves the roster cursor instead, move focus back to the character preview and try again.
  • After a patch, recheck the prompt; interface fixes can alter how a cosmetic slot is displayed.

A reliable pre-match checklist

  1. Choose the intended mode from the main menu.
  2. At character select, highlight the exact fighter who owns the cosmetic.
  3. Use the on-screen prompt, or community-reported left/right inputs, to browse color variants.
  4. Use the alternate-costume prompt, commonly reported as down, to open full outfits.
  5. Check the lock text and requirement if the entry is unavailable.
  6. For an earned item, complete the named Mastery, Player Level, mode, difficulty, or seasonal task.
  7. For Deluxe or paid content, download the platform add-on and restart the game.
  8. Confirm the outfit in the pre-match preview, then start the match.

Why a newly earned skin may not appear immediately

A cosmetic can be missing from the selection screen for several different reasons. The reward may belong to another fighter, may be a color variant located in a different part of the carousel, or may still be tied to an unmet mode or difficulty condition. A season reward may also have an availability window or a requirement that was extended or changed by later patch notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Collection screen to distinguish “not earned” from “not displayed.” If Collection contains the item but character select does not, restart the game and revisit the correct fighter. If Collection does not contain it, return to the requirement and verify the mode, match count, difficulty, season wording, and account that completed the challenge.

Edition and platform considerations

Invincible VS launched with a Standard physical edition that includes a physical disc. Ownership of that edition is separate from Deluxe bonus entitlement and from individual store costumes. A disc or base-game license gives access to the game, but it does not by itself prove that a particular cosmetic add-on is installed.

When moving between platforms or accounts, do not assume purchases and entitlements transfer. Check the store listing for the platform in use, install the add-on there, and confirm that the game is running under the account that owns the content.
