Equip a bow or crossbow in the Equipment menu, then put ammunition compatible with that weapon in an ammunition slot. With two types equipped, R1/RB fires the first slot and R2/RT fires the second.
How to equip arrows or bolts
- Open the in-game Equipment menu.
- Equip a bow or crossbow in a hand slot.
- Select an ammunition slot and equip arrows or bolts that match the ranged weapon. Bows and crossbows use specific ammunition types, so the categories are not interchangeable. See the official Elden Ring controls guide.
How to switch between ammunition slots
When both ammunition slots are filled, use the normal attack input to fire the first-slot ammunition and the strong attack input to fire the second-slot ammunition:
| Slot | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| First ammunition slot | R1 | RB |
| Second ammunition slot | R2 | RT |
These are the controller labels in Bandai Namco’s guide. If your prompts differ, check Menu → System → Controller Settings; controls can vary by input device or customized mapping.
How to aim more precisely
While holding a bow, press L1/LB to enter precision aiming mode, as described in the official controls guide.

Why can’t I use these arrows or bolts?
Check that the ammunition category matches the equipped ranged weapon. Bandai Namco’s guide notes that bows use specific arrow types, and the game’s patch notes for version 1.03 document fixes involving mismatched arrows or bolts and ranged-weapon compatibility. If the ammunition still cannot be used, verify that the intended bow or crossbow is equipped and review the in-game control settings.
