There is no reliable single runtime for “finishing” a Soulslike. First decide whether you mean the main story, the story plus optional content, or a completionist run; then use a current estimate for that specific game and category. Treat it as a planning baseline, not a promise about your own playthrough.
Choose what “finish” means
Completion-time databases separate playthroughs into categories such as main story, main story plus extras, and completionist. Those answer different questions, so do not use one as a stand-in for another. HowLongToBeat is a community-sourced completion-time database; the inspected sources do not establish its sample sizes or a formal statistical method.
- Main story: A useful target if you want to reach the ending while focusing primarily on the central progression.
- Main story plus selected extras: Choose this when you expect to explore optional areas or pursue side content, but not everything.
- Completionist: Use this only if you intend to pursue a near-total or total completion goal. Its estimate should not be presented as the ordinary story runtime.
Build an estimate for the specific game
- Name the game and version. Identify the platform or edition if the estimate or included content differs. Decide whether your target covers the base game alone.
- Pick your completion goal. Select the matching category—main story, story plus extras, or completionist—before looking at the hour count.
- Use a current, title-specific estimate. Attribute the number to its source and category. A community estimate is a planning reference, not an official developer runtime or a guarantee.
- Add only content you plan to play. Keep an expansion estimate separate from the base game unless a source explicitly combines them.
- Allow for personal variation without inventing a formula. Exploration, retries, and familiarity with this style of combat can affect an individual run. The available examples do not support adding a fixed number of hours or percentage for these factors.
Examples: estimates vary by goal and source
The figures below illustrate why scope and attribution matter. They come from secondary pages displaying or citing HowLongToBeat estimates, plus a separate editorial estimate; they are not controlled comparisons or official runtimes.

The two cited Elden Ring guides give slightly different estimates for similar goals. That is a reason to name the source and scope, not to claim there is one definitive runtime. Likewise, Elden Ring and Mortal Shell are examples from different games and sources, not a controlled comparison of how long Soulslikes take.

Account for exploration, retries, and expansions
Optional content and wandering
Optional areas and side activities can make a substantial difference. Tilplay’s Elden Ring guide, for example, puts its main-story estimate at about 55 hours and its main-story-plus-extras estimate at about 100 hours, and describes the open-world game as rewarding wandering. Use that contrast only for Elden Ring; it does not establish a general time increase for other Soulslikes.
Deaths and player familiarity
Repeated attempts and learning enemy patterns are common parts of the genre, and the Mortal Shell estimate explicitly says player skill affects the time. These factors help explain why two players may finish at different times, but the cited sources do not quantify the difference. Avoid turning them into a universal multiplier.

Downloadable expansions
If you plan to play DLC, count it as a separate part of your schedule unless the base-game estimate says it includes that content. Tilplay estimates Shadow of the Erdtree at roughly 20–40 additional hours depending on exploration; that figure applies to this Elden Ring expansion, not to DLC generally.

The available examples range from about 55–60 hours for an Elden Ring main-story estimate to roughly five to twelve hours for a secondary estimate of Mortal Shell. Their sources and estimation approaches differ, so those figures cannot establish a genre average or a reliable runtime for an unlisted game. The inspected sources provide no original-publisher statistic or documented study of completion times across Soulslikes. Estimate title by title, and compare only matching goals, base-game or expansion scope, and compatible sources.

A quick planning checklist
- Have you decided whether you want the story, selected extras, or completionist content?
- Does the number refer to the same game version and content you plan to play?
- Is the estimate for the base game, or does it include a named expansion?
- Have you identified the source and its category rather than relying on an unspecific “hours to beat” number?
- Are you treating exploration and retries as personal variables rather than applying an unsupported fixed adjustment?
