1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn Gears of War: E-Day, the Crimson Omen is an in-combat damage cue: blood sprays from it toward incoming damage, while a downs counter tracks remaining DBNO opportunities. Other HUD symbols have distinct jobs: yellow screen-edge indicators flag imminent high-damage threats, and a triangle marks nearby grenades or explosives. These meanings are documented for E-Day; icons can work differently in other games and modes.
How to identify an unfamiliar Gears of War icon
Start with its location and timing rather than assuming it has one franchise-wide meaning. The same visual category can belong to a game HUD, a piece of faction art, a customization item, or even the separate board game.
- Where is it? Note whether it appears on the HUD, on armor or an emblem, on a map, beside a collectible, or on a board-game die.
- When does it appear? Check whether it flashes during damage, reload, a down or kill, or when an object is nearby—or appears only in a customization screen.
- Which game and mode? A documented E-Day cue should not automatically be applied to Gears 5, an older title, or a different mode.
For a less common marker, include the game, mode, screen location, and what was happening when it appeared. Those details help distinguish an actionable HUD cue from a decorative or lore symbol.
What the Crimson Omen means in E-Day
The Coalition describes the center-screen Omen in E-Day as both a recognizable franchise image and a practical damage display: “every hit now sprays blood off the Omen in the direction of the incoming damage.” The direction of the blood is therefore useful information about where a hit came from, not just a visual effect. The Coalition’s E-Day gameplay update also says the Omen returns to the center of the screen.

The downs counter and DBNO
When a player is DBNO—down but not out—the Downs Counter tracks how many downs remain. The Coalition says a full Omen signals death. This is especially relevant in Horde Siege, where the update describes teams managing downs together.
What the emblem’s design does—and does not—establish
The official material establishes the name “Omen” and its E-Day HUD functions. It does not provide a complete explanation of what each part of the emblem’s shape symbolizes or establish one universal gameplay function for every Gears title. Calling its design skull-like or gear-like is a visual description, not a sourced explanation of its canon meaning.

What E-Day’s other combat indicators mean
The official E-Day accessibility guide documents several distinct HUD cues and settings:
| Indicator | Documented function in E-Day |
|---|---|
| Yellow screen-edge threat indicator | Points toward an imminent high-damage threat. |
| Triangle on a nearby object | Marks nearby grenades or explosives. |
| Hit marker | Confirms a hit; the guide also lists unique hit markers for shots that down or kill an enemy. |
| DBNO/Kill icon | An additional down-or-kill confirmation category, separately configurable from hit markers. |
The guide confirms these functions and categories, but does not name or explain every individual graphic variant. Avoid assigning a more specific meaning to a particular design without identifying the game and seeing the relevant screen.

What the active reload bar tells you
The active reload bar communicates the timing mechanic for reloading; it is not a faction emblem or lore badge. In E-Day it is centered just below the reticle by default, and players can move it to the upper-right corner. The accessibility guide lists the Active Reload Position choices as Centered and Top Right; The Coalition’s gameplay update also describes the centered default.
What COG tags represent
In its June 8, 2026 Collector’s Edition announcement, The Coalition describes replica COG tags engraved with Carlos Santiago’s name and the “ES” marking for the Embry Star commendation, awarded after his death at Aspho Fields. The announcement identifies them as replicas of tags depicted in Gears of War: E-Day; it gives this specific story context rather than defining a universal meaning for every tag or tag-shaped icon. What an omen means on a Gears board-game die
An omen result in the Gears of War board game is a rules trigger, not an explanation of the video-game HUD or Omen emblem. In its April 23, 2014 version 1.1 FAQ, Fantasy Flight Games says that when a Wretch rolls an omen during an attack, another Wretch spawns. For the specified Troika Heavy MG attack, omen rolls have no effect. The outcome depends on the board-game action. See Fantasy Flight Games’ board-game page and FAQ.
Do the Phoenix Omen, Locust emblem, and customization icons have official meanings?
The official sources cited here do not provide a complete lore glossary for the Phoenix Omen, the Locust emblem, or every player customization symbol. The E-Day guide refers to allied COG characters and enemy colors, but does not define faction insignia. Without a primary source explaining a particular emblem, treat its story meaning as unconfirmed rather than assigning it a canon explanation.
