To estimate your gaming PC’s electricity use, measure or estimate its average power draw at the wall in each mode—gaming, idle, and sleep—then multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiply the total kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill to estimate cost. Your PC’s actual use depends on its hardware, workload, settings, and schedule, so there is no single wattage that applies to every gaming PC.
How much electricity does a gaming PC use?
It depends on the complete system and how long it runs in each mode. The most useful figure is the average power draw of the equipment you want to count, measured at the wall while it is doing representative work. A tower-only estimate and a complete gaming-setup estimate are different: the latter can include a monitor and peripherals.
A historical study by Nathaniel Mills and Evan Mills measured five gaming PCs and used assumed population-level operating hours to model a typical 2014-era gaming computer, including one display. The authors reported “unit energy consumption of 1394 kWh/year (based on an average of 4.4 h/day in gaming mode), including the display.” Their modeled base case reached 512 W peak during active gaming and averaged 212 W while on across operating modes. These are results for that study’s systems and assumptions, not a current universal average for gaming PCs. Read the study.
Recent examples can illustrate the arithmetic but should not be treated as representative measurements. For example, a June 2026 RunWatts article modeled mid-range and high-end setups at 350 W and 500 W, respectively, and used an April 2026 U.S. residential average electricity rate of 18.05¢/kWh. Those are calculator assumptions for dated examples, not a standardized survey or a rate that necessarily applies to your bill. See the dated examples.

Why the PSU rating does not tell you consumption
The wattage printed on a power supply unit (PSU) is its capacity rating, not a reading of how much electricity the computer continuously draws. Draw changes with the game or workload, the CPU and GPU, system configuration, settings, and whether the PC is gaming, idle, or asleep. Power consumed at the wall also includes the system’s power-conversion losses.
The Mills study found that measured peak power for its tested complete systems was around 50% below estimates based on component nameplates. That result is a reason not to add up component ratings and treat the sum as measured consumption; it is not a correction factor to apply to every PC. Study details.

Electricity cost = total kWh × your applicable price per kWh
- Choose what to include. For a tower-only figure, measure the PC by itself. For the whole gaming setup, include the monitor and any peripherals you want counted.
- Estimate hours by mode. Work out typical hours gaming, idle at the desktop, and asleep or off over the period you want to estimate. Do not treat every hour the computer is on as a gaming hour.
- Get an average wattage for each mode. Use a representative wall measurement where possible, or a clearly identified estimate. The gaming, idle, and sleep averages may differ substantially.
- Calculate each mode’s energy. Multiply its average watts by its hours, then divide by 1,000. Add the mode totals to get the period’s kWh.
- Apply your electricity rate. Multiply the total kWh by the price per kWh that applies to your household and the period being estimated. If your tariff varies by time or season, use the applicable rates for those periods rather than assuming one flat rate.
A monthly calculator may use a 30-day multiplier to turn a daily estimate into a rough month. That is an approximation; the underlying calculation is watts multiplied by time, converted to kWh, and priced at your rate. Calculator Collection’s guide presents the monthly version of this formula.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
Worked example: separate gaming and idle time
Suppose a wall meter shows an average of 400 W while gaming and 80 W while idle. If the PC is used for 3 gaming hours and 5 idle hours each day, the daily energy estimate is (400 × 3 + 80 × 5) ÷ 1,000 = 1.6 kWh. At an assumed flat rate of 20¢/kWh, that would cost 32¢ for that day. This is an arithmetic example, not a typical PC reading; substitute your measured averages, actual hours, and applicable rate. Add sleep or off-mode energy only if you have a relevant measurement and want it included.

A plug-in electricity meter can measure the energy used by equipment connected to an outlet. A meter such as Kill A Watt is one example; it is an optional measuring tool, not a requirement. The measurement guide recommends a wall-outlet meter and explains why software readings may not represent the whole setup.

- Connect the meter to the outlet, then connect the equipment you intend to count. Include the monitor or other peripherals only if you want a complete-setup estimate.
- Run a typical gaming session, or leave the equipment connected over several representative days. Avoid relying on a brief peak reading if you need an average.
- Record accumulated kWh and the number of hours covered. Divide the kWh by the hours to get average kW; multiply by 1,000 for average watts.
- Repeat for idle and sleep if you want separate mode estimates. Keep the equipment and measurement period clear so you know what the result includes.
CPU or GPU monitoring software can help compare component use across workloads, but its readings may omit other system draw and power-supply conversion losses. A wall measurement is the more direct choice when the question is how much electricity the connected equipment takes from the outlet.
Make estimates comparable
Before comparing two PCs or two estimates, align the assumptions. Otherwise, a difference may reflect what was counted or how it was used rather than the hardware itself.
- Compare wall watts under the same workload, not a PSU capacity rating against a measured draw.
- Use the same gaming, idle, and sleep hours for the same time period.
- Check whether each figure includes just the tower or also a display and peripherals.
- Use the same local price per kWh and tariff period when comparing costs.
- Label readings as measured or estimated, and keep calculator examples distinct from measurements.
Idle time can matter: a lower idle draw may accumulate over many hours, so a short gaming-session estimate alone may understate a computer’s total energy use. The historical study and measurement guidance both distinguish usage modes and the display’s contribution. Mills and Mills’ study; measurement guidance.
