To find out whether your PC can run a new game, compare your computer with the game’s current official PC requirements—one field at a time. Check the operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics card and its required features, DirectX version, and free storage space. A match against the minimum list is not a promise of high settings or flawless performance; the game’s own resolution, frame-rate, and quality targets explain what its minimum and recommended tiers are meant to deliver.
Where to find the right requirements
Start with the publisher’s page or the game’s current storefront listing, and make sure it is the PC version and edition you intend to play. Requirements can differ between games and may be revised, so an old article or a third-party compatibility checker should not be your only authority. Epic Games has a PC verification guide; Steam publishes requirement lists on game pages.
Copy the entire requirement list before comparing. A game’s page may include separate minimum and recommended specifications, performance targets, and qualifications such as a required amount of VRAM or a preferred drive type. Preserve those details rather than reducing the listing to a single “can it run?” number.
Compare every requirement, not just the graphics card
Make a checklist for the game’s minimum and recommended tiers, then record your PC’s matching details. Mark each row meets, falls short, or unclear. If one item is unclear, do not treat it as a pass.

- Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
- Operating system: Check the required Windows version and whether the game requires a 64-bit system.
- Processor: Compare the full CPU model. A brand name or clock speed alone does not establish that your processor matches a listed model.
- Memory: Compare installed RAM with the stated amount. Available RAM can also affect model loading and graphics rendering, according to Steam Support’s graphics and performance guidance.
- Graphics card: Check the exact GPU model, any VRAM requirement, and any notes about supported graphics features or integrated graphics.
- Graphics API and features: Check the DirectX requirement, but do not use that version match as the only test of graphics compatibility.
- Storage: Confirm the required amount of available space on a suitable drive, not merely the drive’s total capacity. Keep any SSD or HDD qualification attached to the requirement.
How to compare CPU and GPU models
Requirements often list alternatives from different manufacturers, joined by “or.” Compare your specific processor or graphics card with those named alternatives; “Intel,” “AMD,” or “NVIDIA” by itself is not enough. Nor does a newer-sounding model name or a higher clock speed alone prove that a component performs like a listed model.
If you cannot establish whether an unfamiliar model is comparable, mark it unclear and look for reliable comparisons of that exact CPU or GPU against the listed models. The official lists cited here do not establish a universal conversion rule between models, so avoid guessing from a single specification number.

Why a DirectX match may not be enough
DirectX is only one part of graphics compatibility. Steam Support cautions that a graphics card can meet a game’s minimum DirectX version yet lack the required pixel shader capability. Check any stated feature or shader notes as well as the API version; if the listing does not make compatibility clear, consult the game’s official support information.
What minimum and recommended requirements promise
“Minimum” and “recommended” are not universal performance standards. Read the resolution, frame rate, and graphics preset stated for that specific game, if provided. Epic Games’ support guidance says that a PC meeting only minimum requirements will probably not run a game at its highest settings; treat that as general guidance, not a guaranteed outcome for every title or system.

For example, the Hogwarts Legacy Steam listing describes its minimum tier as 720p at 30 fps on Low settings and its recommended tier as 1080p at 60 fps on High. Those targets belong to that game’s listing; they do not define what minimum or recommended means elsewhere.
Its published requirements provide a useful example of how to preserve the details while comparing:

The same listing says an SSD is preferred while an HDD is supported for its minimum specification. Requirements and notes can change, so verify the live listing for the game you are considering rather than applying this example to another title.
Requirements can also state more specialized conditions. Square Enix’s PC system requirements example gives minimum and recommended performance conditions of 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low and 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest, respectively, and includes an additional memory note for Intel GPU use. Treat those figures and qualifications as specific to that game, not as a general standard.

What to do when a row falls short or is unclear
- A required OS or 64-bit condition does not match: Treat it as a compatibility problem and check the publisher’s support information before buying or installing.
- Your CPU or GPU model is unfamiliar: Do not infer equivalence from its brand, family, clock speed, or one specification. Find a reliable model-to-model comparison or ask the game’s official support channel.
- DirectX matches but feature support is uncertain: Verify shader and other graphics-feature requirements; the API label alone cannot settle it.
- Free space is below the listing: Check another suitable drive or free enough space. If the listing specifies an SSD preference or support condition, factor that into the comparison.
- You meet minimum but not recommended: Use the game’s own minimum performance target, if stated, as the more relevant expectation; do not assume recommended settings or the highest quality will work well.
- You use integrated graphics: Steam Support recommends trying lower graphics settings when troubleshooting integrated graphics systems, but this does not establish that every integrated GPU can run every game.
When two PCs are available, compare both against the same game and desired target: CPU, GPU and feature support, RAM, OS, free storage, and the resolution, frame rate, and quality level you want. A parts list alone cannot identify a universal winner, and an upgrade should wait until you know which specific requirement your PC misses and whether that component can be replaced compatibly.
