A backup’s place on the depth chart is only a starting clue. To judge whether he is likely to matter when a starting wide receiver is unavailable, check whether he is active, whether he is running routes, whether he earns targets, and whether his role fits the missing player’s assignments. Treat those as separate questions: a promotion can put a receiver on the field without making him the offense’s top option.
First, confirm who is actually available
Check the team’s latest injury report and depth chart close to kickoff. Note whether the starter is ruled out, questionable, or active, and whether other receivers are also unavailable. A vacancy may be shared rather than handed to one player.
CBS Sports’ NFL depth charts list receiver order and injury statuses. Treat the displayed order and status as a live snapshot, not a lasting projection: the page can change as team news develops.
Check whether the backup is running routes
Recent routes run are more informative than a roster label when estimating receiving opportunity. Snap share shows how often a player is on the field, but some snaps may be blocking or other non-route assignments. Route participation helps answer the narrower question: is he actually in position to receive a pass?

PFF’s Fantasy Football Usage & Production Report includes snaps and routes run, along with other usage measures. Compare the candidate’s recent games, giving particular attention to games in which the starter was absent or limited. A clear increase in routes in those circumstances is stronger evidence of a usable role than a depth-chart promotion alone.
Then ask whether targets are likely to follow
Routes create the chance to be targeted; they do not establish that the offense will throw to the receiver. Target share shows the portion of a team’s targets going to a player, while targets per route run (TPRR) relates targets to routes and helps distinguish route volume from attention earned on those routes. Compare both with the player’s own earlier usage where possible.

Target share can describe a receiver’s place in an offense, as NFL.com’s 2026 analysis of A.J. Brown’s fit illustrates. In that article, Stefon Diggs’ 2025 New England season is described as 102 targets, 85 catches and 1,013 receiving yards on a 21.2% target share. The same analysis says the target-share leader on 20 of 32 teams exceeded that share; Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a 35.8% share, Amon-Ra St. Brown 31.3%, and Ja’Marr Chase 30.4% in 2025. These figures show how target shares can differ among established receivers; they are not backup-receiver thresholds.
Compare the candidate’s role with the missing receiver’s
Find out where each player lines up and what routes he tends to run. If the absent starter primarily plays outside while the candidate is a slot receiver, the vacancy may not transfer neatly. Another receiver could move inside, the slot player could keep his usual assignment, and the missing workload could be divided among several players.

When available, inspect alignment, average depth of target (ADOT), and situational splits. These measures help distinguish a receiver who is inheriting similar assignments from one whose extra playing time comes in a different role. PFF lists alignment, ADOT and situational data among the measures in its usage report.
Put the opportunity in passing-game context
A route and a target are not equally valuable in every situation. Consider the team’s passing volume, the quarterback’s tendencies, likely coverage, downfield usage, and red-zone opportunities. These factors help assess whether the player’s role is likely to produce useful receiving chances, but none guarantees a particular result.

NFL.com’s 2026 A.J. Brown analysis offers examples of context rather than a rule for backups. It reports that Drake Maye threw passes of at least 10 air yards on 37.2% of his attempts in 2025, fifth highest in the league, completing 61.2% of those throws. His tight-window attempts made up 17.3% of attempts, with a 48.2% completion rate on those throws. The article also reports that Brown averaged 2.9 yards per route run against man coverage in 2025 among receivers with at least 100 routes, compared with 1.5 for Romeo Doubs and 1.2 for Kayshon Boutte. Those are player- and context-specific figures, not evidence that a backup will reproduce Brown’s results.

| What to compare | What it helps establish |
|---|---|
| Expected snaps and routes | Whether the player is likely to be on the field and available as a receiver. |
| Target share and TPRR | Whether team targets have gone to him and whether he earns targets on his routes. |
| Role and alignment overlap | Whether he can take on assignments similar to those left vacant. |
| Red-zone and downfield usage | Whether his opportunity includes those types of receiving situations. |
| Coverage and quarterback fit | Whether the matchup and passing style suit the role he is likely to play. |
| Sample size | How cautiously to interpret efficiency rates or a short run of targets. |
Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence
Small route samples can make efficiency rates volatile. Separate three judgments: whether the receiver will play, whether he will earn targets, and whether those targets will produce. A player can look promising on one dimension and uncertain on another.
The cited usage data provides ways to inspect a role, but it does not establish a universal cutoff for backup success or a general success rate. Reassess when the player’s actual routes and opportunities are visible instead of assuming a depth-chart promotion means he will inherit a starter’s workload.
