How Does the NHL Injured Reserve List Work, and When Can a Player Return?

NHL IR generally requires at least seven days unavailable; LTIR has a 10-game and 24-day threshold. Neither sets a return date—fitness, roster space and cap rules matter.

The NHL injured reserve list (IR) is a roster designation for a player who cannot play because of injury or illness for at least seven days. Long-term injured reserve (LTIR) is a separate, conditional salary-cap mechanism for a player expected to miss at least 10 NHL regular-season games and 24 calendar days. Neither threshold sets a guaranteed return date: the player must be medically fit, and the club must have room on its roster and meet any applicable salary-cap requirements.

How does the NHL injured reserve list work?

IR allows a club to remove an injured or ill player from its active roster. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes the threshold as at least seven days unavailable; the Seattle Kraken’s front-office explanation says a player on IR cannot participate in NHL game action for a minimum of seven days. These are roster rules, not estimates of how long a particular injury takes to heal.

The designation also does not mean the player is permanently out or that a return is scheduled for the first day he becomes eligible. It records roster status while the player is unavailable. A player cannot rejoin until he is fit and the club can accommodate him.

How is LTIR different from IR?

LTIR is relevant when an injury or illness is expected to keep a player out longer and the club needs to manage its salary-cap position. The NHL–NHLPA 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement sets the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception threshold at 24 calendar days and 10 NHL regular-season games. The club physician must believe the player will be unfit for at least both thresholds; LTIR is not simply another name for ordinary IR.

Feature IR LTIR
Eligibility threshold At least seven days unavailable, as described by the Hurricanes and Kraken. Hurricanes transaction primer; Kraken front-office Q&A. Expected to be unfit for at least 10 NHL regular-season games and 24 calendar days under the 2013 CBA. NHL–NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Primary function Removes the player from the active roster; the Hurricanes primer summarizes IR as providing no salary-cap relief. Can allow replacement salary within CBA limits and, under specified conditions, permit a club to exceed the Upper Limit.
Player’s salary The Hurricanes primer’s summary says IR has no cap effect. The player’s salary and bonuses continue to count toward the club’s averaged club salary. LTIR is a conditional exception, not removal of the injured player’s cap charge.
What is needed to rejoin The player must be healthy and a roster place must be available, as the Kraken explains. The player must be fit. If the club is above the Upper Limit, it must first bring its averaged club salary to the limit or below.

The Hurricanes’ transaction table is a simplified summary of roster and cap effects. The CBA governs the detailed operation of the LTIR exception, including its conditions; LTIR does not erase the injured player’s salary from the club’s cap calculation.

When can a player return from IR or LTIR?

There is no automatic return on day seven, after the tenth missed game, or on the twenty-fourth calendar day. Those numbers describe eligibility thresholds for the designation or exception, not a league-published recovery date. A player returns when medically fit and when the club can complete the roster transaction. As Kraken front-office executive Ricky Olczyk put it: “Once the player is healthy to return, the Club must make certain that a Roster spot exists for such player.”

Returning from IR

Once the player is fit, the club needs an available roster place to activate him. The seven-day minimum does not oblige the club to return him as soon as that period has passed, and the public IR label alone does not reveal his medical prognosis.

Returning from LTIR

Fitness and roster space still matter, but there can also be a salary-cap hurdle. If using LTIR has left the club above the Upper Limit, the club must first reduce its averaged club salary to the Upper Limit or below before the player can rejoin. That may mean changing the roster or its cap commitments; the precise options depend on the club’s circumstances and the CBA’s conditions.

Why might a healthy player still be unavailable?

  • Medical clearance: Being listed on IR or LTIR is not a public forecast of the recovery timeline. The player must be fit to return.
  • Roster space: A healthy player still needs a place on the club’s roster before he can rejoin.
  • Cap compliance: For a club above the Upper Limit because of LTIR, the averaged club salary must be brought to the limit or below before the player returns.

These are separate questions: whether the player is medically ready and whether the club can activate him under roster and cap rules. A delay in activation does not, by itself, establish that the player remains injured.

What the IR or LTIR label does—and does not—tell you

The designation tells you how the club is handling an unavailable player for roster purposes, and LTIR also relates to a specific cap exception. It does not establish a precise injury severity, recovery average, or return date. The thresholds above are rules described in the cited agreement and team explainers, not statistical estimates of player recovery. The cited CBA is the 2013 agreement; season-specific application depends on the governing agreement and any applicable amendments.
