A Metacritic Metascore is a weighted average of selected publication reviews, while Steam’s User Review score is the share of qualifying player recommendations. When they diverge, compare the populations, platform and build, timing, review volume, and concrete reasons behind the numbers. Then give the most weight to issues that affect the way you intend to play.
What each score actually measures
The first mistake in a score disagreement is treating both numbers as if they were averages of the same people answering the same question. They are different evidence streams.

| Measure | How it is calculated | What it can tell you | What it cannot tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic Metascore | Metacritic converts scores from selected critics and publications to a 0–100 scale and applies publication-specific weights. User votes are not included. | How the outlets tracked by Metacritic evaluated the game under their review standards. | Whether the game suits your preferences, or how every player feels about the current version. |
| Steam User Review score | Steam calculates the share of positive and negative recommendations in qualifying reviews. Normally, qualifying reviews come from players who purchased the game on Steam; games that do not require purchase are handled differently. | How likely reviewers in that Steam population were to recommend the purchase, subject to Steam’s review filters and time windows. | A critic-style quality grade, a simple star average, or a guarantee that the score represents your platform and use case. |
Steam also shows recent and all-time views, review history, and language-specific scoring when a language has enough reviews. Metacritic’s score uses the first review and score from each tracked publication, so a publication’s later revision may not replace the number used in the aggregate. Those design choices alone can create a gap without either side being dishonest.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn practical terms, a critic score asks something close to “How did these publications assess this release?” A player recommendation balance asks “Did this Steam review population think a future buyer would be happy with the purchase?” Neither question is identical to “Will I enjoy it?”

A repeatable method for resolving a score gap
1. Match the platform, edition, and release state
Start by making the comparison fair. Check whether the critic review covers the same platform you will use. A PC launch review may describe shader compilation, drivers, mouse input, or hardware requirements that do not apply to a console build. Conversely, a console review may not reveal problems that occur only on PC.
Check the edition as well: standard and deluxe releases can differ in included content, and a subscription or cloud version may run a different build from a locally installed copy. Confirm whether you are looking at a launch review, a post-launch review, a full-release build, or a live-service state after several patches. Write the platform and date beside each score before interpreting it.
Metacritic’s method makes timing especially important because it uses the first review and score from each tracked publication. A game can change substantially after those reviews while the displayed Metascore still reflects the initial submissions. A current player score may therefore describe a newer state than the critic aggregate.
2. Record how much evidence sits behind each number
Note the critic-review count, player-review count, and date distribution. A percentage built from a small number of reviews can move sharply when a few people change their recommendations. A score supported by many reviews is usually less sensitive to any one rating, although a large sample can still be biased toward a particular platform or audience.
Do not invent a universal minimum that makes a score “valid.” Instead, treat volume as a confidence cue and read the distribution. Hundreds of reviews posted over many months answer a different question from thousands posted during one weekend. If the page offers recent and all-time figures, record both; a widening gap between them is often more informative than either number alone.
3. Read specific explanations rather than extreme numbers
Open representative reviews from both positive and negative groups. Look for repeated, concrete observations about:

- Accessibility options such as subtitle controls, remappable input, color settings, difficulty choices, or motion reduction.
- Monetization, required accounts, downloadable content, progression gates, or other purchase conditions.
A reason is useful only when it maps to your plans. A player who dislikes a slow narrative game may give a negative recommendation for a quality that another reader wants. A critic who praises deep systems may be a poor guide if you want a short, relaxed campaign. Separate “this feature exists” from “this feature is bad,” then decide which side of that judgment matches your priorities.

4. Inspect the timeline for sudden review activity
A sharp change in review volume or sentiment deserves investigation. Steam describes a review bomb as a large volume of reviews posted in a compressed period with the aim of lowering a game’s Review Score. Its review-history tools include a timeline or histogram and samples from unusual periods, allowing you to compare the spike with the surrounding record.
Open reviews from before, during, and after the spike. Check whether they discuss the game itself or an external event, and whether the affected period is included in the current score. A single dramatic day can dominate a small or newly released game, while a long-running title may absorb the same number of posts with little movement.
5. Separate an anomaly from an irrelevant complaint
Steam says it investigates anomalous activity and can remove periods it identifies as off-topic review bombs from the score calculation while leaving the reviews available to read. Its test is whether the topic is unrelated to the likelihood that a future purchaser will be happy with the game.
That distinction is narrower than “the reviewers were angry.” A campaign about a broken feature, an unwanted monetization change, or a promised function that failed can be directly relevant to a buyer even if it began during a controversy. A review about an unrelated corporate or political event may be off-topic for one reader but still matter to someone deciding whether to support the product. Treat a surge as a prompt to inspect the evidence, not as automatic proof that every review is invalid.
6. Apply your own decision criteria
After checking the numbers, make a short list of requirements for your purchase. Put platform performance, online availability, accessibility, preferred genre, difficulty tolerance, campaign length, and spending limits in order of importance. Mark each recurring criticism as critical, tolerable, or irrelevant.

This prevents a high aggregate from overruling a deal-breaker. If you need stable four-player matchmaking, a repeated server complaint may matter more than an excellent story score. If you play offline, the same complaint may have no effect. The best conclusion is therefore personal and conditional: “worth buying for this use on this platform,” “wait until a technical issue is fixed,” or “skip because the central loop conflicts with my preferences.”
How to read a Metacritic score without over-trusting it
The weighting is deliberate, not a vote count
Metacritic calls the Metascore a weighted average of reviews from selected critics and publications. It assigns different weights to publications, so the result is not a simple count of every critic and not a player-satisfaction percentage. Two games with the same number of listed reviews can receive different aggregates because the outlet mix and assigned weights differ.
For games, Metacritic says the listed scores come from the publications themselves rather than from an editorial team assigning a new number. The site converts those scores to a common 0–100 scale, but the underlying standards remain those of the individual outlets. Read the review text when you need to know what a number means.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the broad bands as conventions, not laws
Metacritic reported in 2023 that game-publication scores below 50 generally signify negative reviews, while scores in the upper 70s or higher usually indicate an unequivocally good review under the conventions of the publications it tracks. These are descriptive conventions, not universal quality thresholds. A 78 is not a promise that you will enjoy a game, and a 49 is not proof that nobody will.
Account for first-review and early-access limits
Because the aggregate uses the first review and score from each tracked publication, later patches or a publication’s updated opinion may not alter the Metascore. When a game is evolving quickly, pair the aggregate with dated coverage of the current build and with recent player comments.
Metacritic does not include Early Access reviews in the eventual Metascore and enables user ratings only after full release. Early impressions can still reveal design direction or technical risks, but they are provisional evidence and should not be treated as a final score from the same system.

How to read Steam’s User Review score
It is a recommendation balance, not an average grade
Steam’s score summarizes the ratio of positive to negative recommendations. It is not an average of star ratings and does not indicate that every reviewer awarded the same quality scale. The underlying question is closer to whether a reviewer recommends the purchase.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Steam says reviews normally count when the writer purchased the game on Steam, with an exception for games that do not require purchase. This creates a defined population, but it is still not the same population as console owners, people who received a key elsewhere, or critics who played a review build.
Use recent and all-time views together
The all-time score shows the accumulated record; the recent score reveals the direction of the current experience. A low all-time score with a much stronger recent score can indicate recovery after patches. A high all-time score with a sharply weaker recent score can warn of a new technical, balance, or monetization problem.
Steam’s language-specific scoring can appear when a language has enough reviews, and its default handling excludes periods identified as off-topic. Check which view and language you are reading before comparing it with a global critic aggregate.
Why critics and players can disagree
Different audiences and purposes
Critics often assess a release within a limited review window and may emphasize originality, structure, presentation, and the complete package available to them. Players may spend dozens or hundreds of hours, encounter late-game systems, judge long-term service quality, or react to the purchase value at a particular price. Neither perspective is automatically superior; each sees a different slice of the product.
Different platforms and hardware
Performance, controls, resolution, cross-play, loading, and online populations can vary by platform. A critic’s positive console experience does not cancel a PC-specific crash pattern, and a negative PC launch report may not describe a stable console build. Always anchor the score to the platform you will actually use.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Different dates and game states
Launch-day bugs, emergency patches, balance changes, server queues, and content updates can move player sentiment quickly. Critics may have reviewed a pre-release build under embargo while players encounter the public build. A disagreement can therefore be a timeline mismatch rather than a difference in taste.
Different standards for value
A critic may judge a short campaign on craft and pacing, while players may decide that the asking price is too high for its length. Service-game players may care about matchmaking and update cadence; critics may have little time to observe either. Identify the standard behind each judgment before deciding that one group is “wrong.”
Sampling and selection effects
People who choose to post reviews are not a random sample of everyone who bought or played the game. Enthusiastic fans, frustrated customers, and people motivated by a controversy may be overrepresented. Metacritic’s selected-publication set is also not every critic who covered the game. These are reasons to inspect distributions and explanations, not reasons to discard either source.

How to investigate a suspected review bomb
- Find the unusual period. Use Steam’s review-history timeline to locate a sudden concentration of posts or a steep sentiment change.
- Read a sample from the spike. Check whether the text discusses gameplay, performance, access, pricing, or another issue connected to a buyer’s likely satisfaction.
- Compare adjacent periods. Read reviews immediately before and after the spike and note whether the same complaint persists.
- Check the score treatment. Steam may exclude a period it identifies as an off-topic review bomb while retaining the reviews for inspection. Do not assume exclusion means every post was false.
- Separate cause from relevance. An external event can be irrelevant to your purchase, or it can reveal a change in ownership, policy, access, or service that you consider important.
- Decide with the remaining evidence. Weigh recurring, game-related observations and your platform needs more heavily than an unexplained headline number.
A 2024 study by Javier Coronado-Blázquez reported 0.88 validation accuracy for a model distinguishing negative ratings from review bombing in English-language Metacritic PC user-score aggregations. The authors worked with more than 50,000 aggregations. That result describes the study’s dataset and classification task; it is not a universal reliability rate for online ratings and is not a ready-made verdict on a particular game.
Comparing two games when their scores point in different directions
When choosing between games, place the evidence in a side-by-side worksheet rather than comparing two headline numbers.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Platform and build | Are both scores from the platform and edition you will buy? Are they launch, patched, Early Access, or full-release observations? |
| Review volume and dates | How many critic and player reviews exist, and are they spread over time or concentrated in one period? |
| Critic outlet mix | Which publications are represented, and could their weighting or review standards explain the aggregate? |
| Recurring gameplay issues | Do repeated comments concern the core loop, pacing, difficulty, controls, or content length? |
| Technical and online issues | Are crashes, performance, servers, matchmaking, or save problems platform-specific or still current? |
| Accessibility and monetization | Do options, account requirements, pricing, progression gates, or downloadable content affect your decision? |
| Personal fit | Which game better matches your genre preferences, tolerance for difficulty, desired campaign or service model, and budget? |
For example, suppose one game has a strong critic score but a weak recent Steam score. If current reviews repeatedly describe crashes on your graphics card, that evidence outweighs the broad critic consensus for your purchase. If the negative posts concern an online mode you will never use and the single-player campaign matches your priorities, the gap may be less important. Conversely, a game with a modest critic score but consistently positive player reports may be a better choice for someone who values replayability and long-term community activity over a tightly paced campaign.
Common mistakes that produce bad conclusions
- Choosing the larger number. The numbers are built from different populations and scales; arithmetic comparison is not a decision rule.
- Ignoring platform. A score from another platform can conceal the exact problem you are trying to avoid.
- Mixing launch and current scores. A day-one technical review and a post-patch player recommendation may describe different games.
- Treating a percentage as precise. A recommendation balance does not show the number of reviews, their dates, or the reasons behind them.
- Assuming every negative spike is fake. Steam’s off-topic treatment concerns relevance to future purchasers, not whether every angry review is dishonest.
- Assuming every controversy is irrelevant. If the event changes access, pricing, features, or support, it may directly affect your likely satisfaction.
- Reading only extremes. The most positive and most negative posts are often less representative than several ordinary, specific explanations.
- Using a critic threshold as a personal guarantee. Metacritic’s below-50 and upper-70s conventions describe publication practice, not your taste.
- Forgetting Early Access status. Early impressions can be useful warnings but are not part of Metacritic’s eventual full-release Metascore.
A compact decision checklist
Before buying a game with conflicting scores, answer these questions:
- Am I comparing the same platform, edition, and release state?
- How many critic and player reviews support each score, and when were they posted?
- What do recent and all-time player views show?
- Which three praises and three complaints recur in the actual review text?
- Is there a review-history spike, and is it about the game or an unrelated event?
- Would each recurring complaint affect my genre, difficulty, accessibility, online, or monetization priorities?
- Do I need to wait for a patch, a sale, a server population check, or more evidence?
If you can answer those questions, the disagreement has done something useful: it has exposed which parts of the game require closer inspection. The final decision should be a platform- and preference-specific judgment, not a contest between critics and players.
