How to Evaluate the Risk of Buying a Game Before Release

A release date is a plan, not a guarantee. Compare what is playable now with future promises, understand edition extras, and verify your store’s refund terms before paying.

An announced release date is a plan, not a guarantee. Before paying, identify whether you are buying a future-delivery pre-purchase, a playable but unfinished Early Access game, or an edition that mainly offers earlier access. Judge what exists now separately from what is promised, and check the refund rules for your store, region, and edition. If the uncertainty or refund terms do not work for you, waiting for release and independent player feedback is a reasonable choice.

First, identify what is being sold

Similar-looking store labels can describe different purchase situations. The key question is whether you can play the game at payment, and whether that access is the product itself or an added early-play benefit.

Purchase type What you get at payment What to keep in mind
Announced, not available to buy No game access yet; a release date or window may be announced. There is no purchase to assess until a store lists an offer. Treat the date as a schedule, not proof of delivery.
Pre-purchase A purchase made before the game is delivered; it may include bonuses. For a title not playable before release on Steam, eligible refunds may be requested before release. Check the applicable policy and any early-access exception.
Early Access A playable game that remains in development. Assess the current playable state, not only planned features. Valve says developers cannot know exactly when a game will be finished or guarantee future additions. Steam Early Access guidance
Advance Access Earlier play offered as part of a Steam pre-purchase, typically before the general release. It is not the same as Steam Early Access, and its playtime counts toward Steam’s refund playtime limit. Steam guidance on Early Access and Advance Access

Valve describes Early Access as a way to sell an in-development game, not as a way to crowdfund development. Its guidance says customers should buy based on the current state rather than promises about a future that may not happen. That distinction is useful beyond Steam: a roadmap expresses intent, not a guarantee.

Judge the evidence available now

Separate observable facts from future claims. A practical way to do that is to write down what is playable, what has merely been announced, and what is promised for later. This makes it harder for an attractive trailer or a long roadmap to stand in for evidence about the version you would actually receive.

GameStop Physical Gift Card
  • Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
  • Look for hands-on evidence. A demo, playtest, or sustained gameplay footage can show mechanics and presentation. A promotional clip may be a real slice of the game without showing how representative or complete it is.
  • Check what the listing says is playable. Look for the available modes, features, platforms, and current limitations. For Early Access, focus on the present build rather than treating unfinished content as included today.
  • Separate current content from planned content. Mark roadmap items, target dates, and future platform plans as expectations. Steam’s Early Access guidance warns that completion dates and additions cannot be guaranteed.
  • Look for recent schedule communication. Note whether the store gives a specific date or a broad window, whether it has changed, and whether the publisher has explained the latest schedule. These are context for your decision, not proof of a launch outcome.

Release delays are sufficiently established as a subject of study, but the available result for An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam only establishes that its authors analyzed 23,485 Steam games in 2022. It does not provide a delay rate in the reported excerpt, so that figure cannot support a numerical estimate of the chance that a particular game will be delayed. Study record

Compare the purchase with waiting

When several purchase routes are available, compare them on the things that change your exposure: what is playable at payment, how much depends on future promises, what an upgraded edition adds, and whether cancellation is available on your terms. Waiting is also an option: it may provide launch information and independent player feedback, at the cost of not playing earlier or receiving any purchase-only bonus.

  • DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
  • GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
  • MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
  • PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
  • Ask what an edition upgrade actually adds. Earlier access, cosmetics, or bundled content have value only if you want them. Compare the extra price with the specific additions rather than treating a higher tier as inherently safer or better.
  • Consider whether earlier play fits the game. Valve notes that early access may not suit some games, such as narrative single-player games or titles where an early competitive advantage affects other players. Decide whether the timing is a benefit to you or changes the experience you want.
  • Set your downside threshold. Ask whether you can comfortably have the money tied up, and whether you would still want the game if some announced features were missing. These questions help make the choice personal; they do not predict the game’s quality.
  • Decide what information is worth waiting for. If an official update, demo, or launch feedback could materially change your view, buying now commits you before that evidence arrives.

Read the refund rules for your store and region

Refunds can reduce purchase risk, but they are conditional and differ by platform, region, product, and circumstances. Confirm the current policy and the rules shown for your transaction before paying; do not assume another store’s terms apply.

Steam

Valve’s policy says eligible game refunds generally require a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of play. For an eligible pre-purchase that is not playable before release, a refund may be requested at any time before release; the standard post-release period and playtime conditions start on release. Any playtime before release, including Advance Access, counts toward the two-hour limit. These are policy conditions, not a guarantee that every transaction qualifies. PlayStation Store in the United States

The cited US policy says a digital pre-order paid more than 14 days before release may be cancelled before release if the main product has not started downloading or streaming. For an order placed 14 days or less before release, it describes a 14-day cancellation period from payment, with the same download-or-streaming condition. Auto-download can start delivery, so check settings and timing. This is the US policy only; other regions and retailers may differ. The policy also notes that local law may provide additional rights. Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online

Make the decision

  1. Name the purchase type. Establish whether the game is a pre-purchase, an Early Access product, or an edition with Advance Access.
  2. List what exists today. Use the store description and available playable evidence; keep future features and dates in a separate list.
  3. Price the extras for yourself. Decide whether earlier access or included bonuses justify any added cost.
  4. Verify cancellation conditions. Read the policy for the exact storefront, region, and offer, including any playtime or download conditions.
  5. Choose your tolerance for uncertainty. Buy now only if the current evidence, price, and terms leave you comfortable with the downside; otherwise, wait.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
