How to Evaluate Whether a New Video Game IP Is Worth Following Before Launch

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to judge an unreleased game is to evaluate evidence of its playable core, not the excitement of its setting or trailer. Read the store page for a precise description of what you do, watch footage that shows those actions, play a demo when one exists, and check dated developer updates for what is real versus planned. A free follow or wishlist is useful for tracking a release; it is not a quality score. Treat a preorder as a commitment made before you can fully assess the game.

This method applies to a new intellectual property (IP) on any platform. Some of the policy details below are specific to Steam and can change, so use the current store page and developer announcements for the particular game you are considering.

1. Turn the marketing pitch into a playable promise

A new IP has no established history to rely on. Start by removing the cinematic language and writing one sentence that describes the repeated player activity. For example: “You explore compact areas, combine tools to solve environmental problems, and escape before a timer expires.” If you cannot explain the loop in concrete verbs, the public evidence is still too vague for a confident judgment.

Read the official store description, then record the details that affect whether the game fits you:

  • Genre and structure: Is it a role-playing game, strategy game, survival game, puzzle game, shooter, or a blend? Does it use missions, runs, a campaign, an open world, or competitive matches?
  • Core actions: What do you do repeatedly—aim, build, negotiate, manage resources, investigate, fight, or coordinate with other players?
  • Perspective and controls: First-person, third-person, top-down, side-scrolling, mouse-and-keyboard, controller, touch, or another scheme can change the experience substantially.
  • Mode and audience: Is it solo, cooperative, competitive, or a combination? Is an internet connection required? Are private sessions or matchmaking described?
  • Platform and edition: Check the exact operating system, console generation, storefront, language support, and controller requirements listed for the version you would buy.
  • Distinctive hook: Identify the mechanic that supposedly separates this IP from familiar games. A setting, art style, or lore premise is not itself a gameplay hook.

Next, compare that sentence with the screenshots and videos. They should show the same kinds of actions the description emphasizes. If the page promises systemic building but every image shows combat, you have discovered an information gap, not confirmation that both systems are equally developed. Keep a note of claims that are stated as future features rather than features demonstrated now.

Questions that expose a vague pitch

  • Could you describe a typical five-minute session without using words such as “immersive,” “dynamic,” or “next-generation”?
  • Do the available materials show a decision the player makes, or only a character moving through a cinematic scene?
  • Is the feature you care about shown in several situations, or mentioned once in promotional text?
  • Would the game still interest you if its story, visual theme, and character names were replaced with placeholders?

If the answers remain unclear, mark the game “insufficient evidence” rather than “probably good.” You can revisit that judgment when a representative build appears.

2. Weight evidence by what it can actually prove

Different materials answer different questions. A trailer can establish tone and reveal that a feature exists in some form; it cannot establish how a complete campaign feels. A demo can reveal controls and pacing directly; it still covers only a small portion of the final product. Use the following hierarchy as a way to avoid letting polished but weak evidence dominate your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Evidence What it can tell you What it cannot establish by itself
Playable demo Whether controls, readability, pacing, and the central loop appeal to you in practice. Final content volume, long-term balance, performance across all hardware, or the quality of later chapters.
Extended, representative gameplay How systems interact, how often the player makes decisions, and whether the advertised loop is understandable. Bug-free launch performance, complete feature coverage, or the experience after many hours.
Short gameplay clips That particular mechanics or presentation elements exist in the shown build. How frequently those mechanics occur, how they connect, or whether the clip is typical.
Screenshots and written description Art direction, interface style, listed modes, platforms, and the developer’s stated intent. Responsiveness, pacing, depth, stability, and whether the feature works as advertised.
Cinematic trailer Setting, characters, tone, and the kind of story or mood the team wants to convey. Actual input, repeated play, performance, or the presence of every implied feature.
Future roadmap or promise What the team says it hopes to add. Whether the addition will ship, when it will arrive, or how well it will work.

This is not a prediction formula. It is a guardrail: give direct interaction more weight than claims about interaction, while keeping the limits of each sample in view.

3. Inspect trailers for decisions, not spectacle

Watch official footage once for overall appeal, then watch it again with the sound and promotional framing treated as background. Pause whenever the player appears to act and ask what decision is being made. Look for targeting, resource choices, dialogue options, construction, navigation, timing, failure, or cooperation—not merely camera movement and scripted animation.

Record how much of the runtime is unmistakable gameplay and whether the scenes appear representative. A montage may show ten systems in a few seconds without explaining how any of them works. A single uninterrupted sequence can be more informative because it reveals transitions, interface feedback, and the amount of time spent between exciting moments. Neither format proves that the final game will perform well on your hardware.

One academic experiment illustrates why context matters. In a 2018 paper, Vishal Batchu, Varshit Battu, Murali Krishna Reddy, and Radhika Mamidi modeled game scores from multimodal information. They reported that adding summaries to trailers improved prediction accuracy by over 5% compared with trailer-only input: “How to rate a video game?” A prediction system for video games based on multimodal information. The authors also discuss irrelevant imagery and dataset limitations. That result describes their experiment; it is not a dependable score predictor for one unreleased game, and it does not replace playing the game yourself.

A trailer-audit checklist

  1. Write down every mechanic the store page emphasizes.
  2. Mark the timestamps where those mechanics are actually visible.
  3. Separate player-controlled moments from cutscenes, scripted takedowns, and environmental flyovers.
  4. Note whether the footage identifies its build or platform; if it does not, avoid assuming that performance will match your system.
  5. List unanswered questions to test in a demo or look for in later footage.

4. Give a demo the most useful kind of attention

A demo is valuable because it lets you answer personal questions that footage cannot: Do the controls feel comfortable? Can you read the interface? Does the central action remain interesting after the novelty wears off? Does the difficulty communicate what went wrong?

Steam Next Fest is organized around playable demos and real-time player feedback. Its event guidance explains the purpose and participation details for developers and players at Steam Next Fest. When a game appears there, use the event as an opportunity to test a specific hypothesis, not as a badge of quality.

Plan a short, repeatable test:

  1. Before launching, write three questions based on the store page—for example, whether stealth is optional, whether building decisions matter, and whether text is readable at your display distance.
  2. Play far enough to encounter the ordinary loop, not just the tutorial’s most polished showcase.
  3. Try the controls with your intended input device and, where possible, the hardware you would use at launch.
  4. Notice friction separately from taste. A feature can be clear but simply not appeal to you; a bug or unclear control can be a problem even when the concept is attractive.
  5. After playing, describe what you did repeatedly in your own words. If that description differs sharply from the store pitch, lower your confidence until more evidence appears.

Do not confuse platform approval with exhaustive testing. Valve states that Steam’s demo build review checks whether a demo has the promised features and runs, but “it is not a full QA process, and will not catch or even look for most bugs.” The qualification appears in the Steam Next Fest documentation. A demo may therefore be useful evidence about the loop while still containing crashes, missing polish, or issues that will not represent the final release.

What a demo cannot answer

  • Whether the full campaign sustains its ideas for dozens of hours.
  • How late-game balance, multiplayer population, or endgame systems will work.
  • Whether every promised platform will perform similarly.
  • Whether content planned for after launch will arrive.

Use those unknowns to decide what to monitor next rather than treating a positive demo as a complete review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check development communication for concrete progress

Follow the developer’s dated announcements, patch notes, public demonstrations, and explanations of changes. The useful distinction is between available now, in the current build but limited, and planned. A post that says “multiplayer is coming” is a plan; a post showing a test build with connection requirements and known limitations is stronger evidence of present progress.

Look for specificity rather than posting frequency alone. A small team can communicate infrequently while making progress, and frequent posts can still avoid the questions that matter. Evaluate whether updates identify what changed, what remains broken, and which platforms or modes are affected. Save the dates so you can tell whether a statement is current.

Early Access requires a different standard

Early Access is a playable product offered before the developer considers it complete, not a promise that a future version will match your imagination. Valve’s Early Access guidance says: “Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.” Read the full distinction between Early Access and a later-delivered pre-purchase at Steam Early Access documentation.

For an Early Access title, inspect the current build’s maps, modes, progression, stability, and player population. Decide whether that version is worth your money even if no roadmap item ships. A roadmap can help you understand direction, but it should not be added to the value you are buying today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Use a wishlist or follow as a reminder, not a verdict

A wishlist is a low-commitment tracking tool. On Steam, Valve says, “With a few exceptions like the Popular Upcoming tab, wishlists are not a factor in your game’s algorithmic visibility on Steam.” The statement is in Visibility on Steam. Wishlisted customers may receive an email at launch or when a qualifying discount is applied; the same documentation describes a discount threshold of 20% or greater.

Those notifications make a wishlist practical even when you are undecided. They do not tell you that a game is well made, that it will sell, or that it will suit your preferences. Public wishlist totals are often unavailable, are not comparable between games with different audiences, and say nothing about controls, pacing, accessibility, or technical quality. No universal wishlist count can serve as a reliable “worth following” threshold.

Use the feature after you have recorded your evidence level. A wishlist can mean “remind me to check the launch build,” not “I endorse this game.” When the release date arrives, reopen the store page, read the current system requirements and recent updates, and look for launch reviews or a new demo before spending money.

7. Treat preorders as a separate risk decision

Preordering asks you to pay before you can evaluate the finished product. Valve’s Pre-Purchasing on Steam guidance cautions that most Steam pre-purchase campaigns do not bring much sales and says the platform supports pre-purchases only rarely for established partners with a proven Steam track record. That is a platform policy and not a guarantee about any individual game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For your own decision, identify what you receive by paying early and what evidence you give up. A bonus item or small discount may not compensate for losing the chance to test the actual loop. If the game has no representative gameplay, no demo, and no specific explanation of current features, waiting is the option with less information risk. If you do preorder, do so because you accept the product as an uncertain commitment—not because a trailer or wishlist count proves quality.

8. Compare several upcoming games with the same worksheet

When multiple new IPs compete for your attention, apply identical questions to each one. This prevents the game with the most expensive marketing from receiving an unfair advantage.

Axis Evidence to record Decision question
Gameplay clarity Your one-sentence description of the repeated loop and the features that demonstrate it. Can I explain what I will do most of the time?
Evidence quality Playable demo, extended gameplay, short clips, screenshots, cinematic material, or plans. How much of my judgment rests on direct interaction?
Personal fit Genre, pace, difficulty signals, perspective, solo or multiplayer requirements, input method, platform, and accessibility information that is actually listed. Does the demonstrated activity fit how and where I play?
Development transparency Dated updates, patch notes, demonstrations, known issues, and a clear separation between current and planned features. Can I tell what exists today?
Commitment risk Free follow or demo versus preorder or Early Access purchase. Can I wait for stronger evidence without losing anything important?

Use qualitative labels such as clear, partial, and unknown rather than inventing a numerical score. A game with a compelling premise but “unknown” evidence on controls should remain a watch item, not be ranked beside a game you have played.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Resolve common evidence gaps before launch

No representative gameplay is available

Do not fill the gap with assumptions about the final game. Follow the page if you want an alert, and set a personal trigger for reconsideration—such as a hands-on demo, an uninterrupted gameplay session, or a dated update that identifies the current build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trailer shows features the store page does not explain

List each feature and look for an official explanation of its role, availability, and mode restrictions. Until then, treat the scene as evidence that the developer wants to show the feature, not proof that it is a deep or central system.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.

The demo is fun but extremely short

Keep the positive finding narrow: you have evidence that the controls and sampled loop work for you in that slice. You do not yet know whether progression, variety, or technical performance holds across the full release.

Updates are sparse

Silence alone cannot establish that development has failed. Record the last dated information, check the current store page, and lower your confidence only for the questions that remain unanswered. Revisit the decision when new evidence appears.

The game is in Early Access

Judge the build you can launch now. Check its actual modes, content, stability, and player population, then decide whether that present package justifies the price without counting roadmap promises.

10. A practical before-launch decision sequence

  1. Define the appeal: Write the core player actions, mode, platform, and hook from the official page.
  2. Verify the claim: Watch footage and mark which actions are demonstrated in a seemingly ordinary play sequence.
  3. Test directly: Play a demo when available, using your intended hardware and input method, and answer prewritten questions.
  4. Check the timeline: Read dated announcements and patch notes to separate the current build from future plans.
  5. Classify the commitment: Choose a free follow, a wishlist reminder, a later review, an Early Access purchase based on the current build, or a preorder only if you accept the remaining uncertainty.
  6. Set a recheck date: Revisit the store page and latest developer update at launch or after a meaningful demo instead of letting an old trailer make the decision indefinitely.

This sequence produces a defensible personal judgment, not a forecast of sales or a guarantee of launch quality. It also lets you follow a promising project without confusing attention with approval.

11. What popularity studies can—and cannot—tell you

Research on Steam popularity has examined associations with factors such as price, game size, supported languages, release date, and genre. The paper “Predicting the Popularity of Games on Steam” focuses on early post-release popularity, not on a dependable pre-launch verdict for one new IP. A game can become popular without matching your tastes, and a niche game can be exactly right for you.

There is no named industry-wide statistic that establishes a dependable pre-launch success threshold. The most useful conclusion is therefore personal and evidence-based: follow when the demonstrated loop fits you and the cost of waiting is low; hold when the core activity is unclear; and buy only when the current product, rather than an imagined future, meets your standard.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
