To extract in Dark and Darker, find an exit that is available on your current map, activate it if needed, and complete its exit action. For a blue escape portal, aim at the portal and press the interaction key—listed as F in the community wiki—then enter the portal after it appears. Red stairs are different: they take you down to another level rather than ending your run.
How to leave through a blue escape portal
- Find an available blue escape portal. Static escape portals are described by the community wiki as blue-glowing ground pedestals. Portal locations and availability depend on the live map and match; use what you can see in your current game rather than assuming a fixed location.
- Aim at the portal and interact. The wiki lists F as the interaction key, but its page is marked as a work in progress. Check your current control settings if F does not activate it.
- Wait for the blue portal to appear, then walk into it. Interacting starts the process; it does not by itself complete the escape. The wiki estimates that materialization takes about 1–2 seconds and warns that disruption or enemy attacks can interrupt activation.
- Enter promptly if it is a pedestal portal. Ironmace’s Hotfix #109 patch note, dated February 26, 2026, says pedestal escape portals close automatically if unused after a short time. They can be activated again until used. The same change does not apply to randomly appearing escape portals, which do not automatically close under that rule.
The community wiki also describes static portals as eventually emerging in sets of three. Treat that as a reference, not a guarantee for every map or match: the page identifies itself as a work in progress and reports patch 6.12 Hotfix 126.
Escape portals and red down stairs are not the same

If your goal is to leave with the loot from the current run, do not take red down stairs expecting them to extract you. They continue the run on another level.
Why a stair exit may not let your whole party through
Stair access is time-sensitive: the portcullis closes after a short duration, so a player arriving late may find it blocked. The cited official update does not establish current party capacity for stairs or other exits, and a 2024 Steam discussion describing party exits is historical rather than current mechanics guidance. Do not assume that a particular portal, raft, elevator, or stair exit can take the whole party. Check the live map and current game information, and coordinate so party members reach an exit while it is available.

Other exit methods
A second community wiki page lists Escape Ropes and Static Extracts alongside portals, but the available source does not establish where or in which modes those methods are currently available. Treat them as possible exit types to verify against the map and current updates, not universal options.

Quick checks when an exit does not work
- Portal interaction has no effect: confirm that you are aiming at an active portal and check the interaction binding in your controls; F is the wiki’s listed key, not a guarantee for every customized setup.
- The portal appeared but you are still in the dungeon: walk into it. Activation and entering are separate actions.
- A pedestal portal disappeared: Hotfix #109 says it may be reactivated until used. Try activating it again if it is still available.
- The gate at red stairs is closed: those stairs lead deeper, not out. Their portcullis is time-limited; use the red torches as the cue to open it and pass through.
- You cannot find the exit or confirm party capacity: map-specific locations and group capacity are not established by the cited sources. Check the live in-game map and current update notes rather than relying on older player advice.
