That setting repeats the playlist; it does not itself fade audio between tracks. For automated volume fades, you can use the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin, but you need a suitable trigger—and a scene transition is not the same as a playlist-item boundary.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- In the OBS Sources dock, click the add button and choose VLC Video. Add the audio or video files you want in the source’s playlist. OBS documents the VLC Video source for playlists; its basic Media Source is for an individual local file. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as on by default. Shuffle is separate and defaults to off; enable it only if you want playback order randomized.
- If VLC Video is missing from the source list, install VLC. OBS requires VLC for this source, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Play the source and confirm that the items play in the intended order and that playback returns to the beginning after the last item. Test the complete playlist, not just the first transition.
Understand what OBS fades—and what it does not
OBS’s built-in Fade is a scene transition: it blends from one scene to another over a chosen duration. It is useful when your stream changes scenes, but the OBS documentation describes it as a scene transition, not as a per-track fade control for a single VLC playlist. The VLC source properties document looping and shuffling, but do not list a playlist crossfade setting. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
OBS users have requested transitions between videos in the VLC Video Playlist source, but a feature request is not a definitive specification for every OBS release. Check the properties available in your installed build rather than assuming it has a track-crossfade option.
Automate volume fades with Advanced Scene Switcher
Advanced Scene Switcher is an optional OBS plugin with macro conditions and actions, including audio actions. Its cited resource listing reports version 1.36.1, a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Plugin compatibility can change, so check the listing and your OBS version before installing.

- Install a plugin version compatible with your OBS installation, following the plugin’s own instructions.
- In Advanced Scene Switcher, create a macro that targets the audio source and changes its volume, with a fade duration set in the audio action.
- Choose a trigger that matches the event you actually want to fade on. For example, a scene-transition condition can fade audio when a scene changes. It does not automatically mean the plugin will detect each VLC playlist item ending.
- Test the trigger, volume levels, and fade duration in a private or otherwise safe test stream. Let the entire playlist run through its end and loop point before relying on the setup live.
A community example shows audio being faded to 0% on a transition-from condition and to 100% on a transition-to condition. That example concerns scene transitions; it does not establish a reliable, universal trigger recipe for VLC playlist boundaries. See the community discussion about fading audio between scenes.

Troubleshoot common problems
VLC Video is not available as a source
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation and check the source list again.

The playlist stops instead of repeating
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist. Confirm that the files are actually in that source’s playlist and let the final item finish during your test.
The audio cuts between tracks
Looping and shuffling control playback behavior, not crossfading. A scene Fade only applies when changing scenes. If you use a plugin, verify that its macro trigger fires at the event you intend; do not assume a scene-transition condition corresponds to the end of a playlist item.

A plugin action does not run or its controls differ
Check the installed OBS and plugin versions against the plugin listing, then inspect the macro’s condition, source selection, target volume, and fade duration. Test the full sequence outside a live broadcast before depending on it.
