How to Feed Bees: Choosing the Right Feed and When to Use It

Feed honey bees only when stores or forage are inadequate. Match syrup, solid sugar, or protein feed to the colony’s need and conditions.

Honey bees do not have one universally “favorite” food, and most colonies do not need to be fed on a fixed schedule. Check the colony’s stores and available forage first. When natural food or stored honey is inadequate, choose syrup, solid sugar, or a protein supplement according to the colony’s need, the weather, and whether honey supers for harvest are on the hive.

When should you feed a honey bee colony?

Feed when a colony lacks adequate natural food or stored honey, not simply because a calendar says it is time. A new package or nuc may need support while establishing comb, and a colony can face starvation when poor weather limits foraging. By contrast, a colony with sufficient stores and forage does not automatically benefit from continuous syrup feeding.

Before feeding, inspect the colony’s stores and consider whether bees can forage. If you are unsure whether a colony is in danger or how local conditions affect feeding, consult your regional extension service or bee inspector.

Which feed should you choose?

Colony need or conditions Feed to consider Purpose and cautions
New colony establishing comb, or limited forage with low stores Sugar syrup Can support comb drawing and help prevent starvation when bees cannot forage; stop before adding honey supers for harvest.
Supplementing stores, encouraging brood rearing, or drawing comb 1:1 sugar-to-water syrup A thinner syrup for supplementation and colony stimulation.
Low reserves that need to be built up 2:1 sugar-to-water syrup A stronger syrup used to add food stores.
Cold weather when liquid feed is unsuitable Fondant, sugar candy, or another dry sugar feed A solid option when bees cannot safely take liquid feed; colony strength and access to the feed matter.
Protein need associated with brood rearing Pollen patty or pollen substitute Provides protein; it does not replace carbohydrate feed such as syrup or sugar.

Agriculture Victoria describes 1:1 syrup for supplementation, brood stimulation, and comb drawing, and 2:1 syrup for building stores. Its guidance also notes that dry sugar works best under relatively humid conditions and that a colony at starvation level needs syrup first. See Agriculture Victoria’s feeding guidance.

How do you prepare and provide syrup?

Mix the ratio for the job

Use a 1:1 sugar-to-water ratio when supplementing, encouraging brood rearing, or helping bees draw comb. Use 2:1 when the aim is to add stores because reserves are low. These are practical feed ratios described by Agriculture Victoria, not a reason to feed a colony that already has adequate resources.

Use an internal feeder

Provide syrup inside the hive with a suitable hive feeder rather than leaving it exposed outdoors. Open feeding can attract bees from nearby managed or feral colonies, waste feed, encourage robbing, and spread disease. Avoid feeding honey from an unknown source as well: it may transmit infection between hives.

What changes in cold weather?

Liquid feed is appropriate only when bees can take it. In extreme cold, syrup can chill bees as they evaporate water from it. Fondant, sugar candy, or another dry sugar feed may be more suitable when liquid feeding is not practical; the colony still needs to be strong enough to reach and use the feed. For cold-weather feeding options, see Mississippi State University Extension’s seasonal management guidance and USU Extension’s overview of honey bee foods.

Why syrup feeding must stop before harvest supers go on

Do not feed syrup while honey supers intended for human harvest are on the hive. Bees may store supplemental syrup in the cells, compromising the honey collected for harvest. In a March 21, 2025 Ask Extension response, Ana Heck, Apiculture Extension Educator with Michigan State University Extension, advises against feeding syrup when harvest supers are present. The same guidance discusses syrup for new colonies drawing wax and for spring support when weather restricts foraging: Michigan State University Extension’s answer on feeding bees.

  • SIZED FOR BOARDMAN ENTRANCE FEEDER BASES – Jar dimensions are designed to integrate with standard Boardman feeder bases without interfering with the entrance slot, for a clean and secure fit every time.
  • WORKS AS ENTRANCE OR INTERNAL HIVE FEEDER – The step feeder insert lets bees drink from lid holes at the entrance or inside an empty hive box, giving you flexibility across different feeding situations.

Is pollen substitute the same as sugar feed?

No. Syrup and solid sugars supply carbohydrate energy. Pollen patties or substitutes serve a different purpose: they provide protein when brood-rearing needs call for it. A pollen patty is not a substitute for carbohydrate feed when a colony lacks energy stores. USU Extension distinguishes these feed types in its guide to what honey bees eat.

Should you feed 1:1 syrup continuously from spring to late fall?

No. Continuous feeding is not a universal rule. Decide based on the colony’s stores, forage, condition, and purpose for feeding. Syrup may help a new colony draw comb or support a colony when weather restricts foraging, but it should not continue into a period when harvest supers are on the hive. For broader supplemental-feeding options, see the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s guide.
