To estimate a Pokémon card’s value, identify the exact printing and condition, then compare it with recent completed sales of genuinely similar copies. Active listings show what sellers hope to get—not what buyers have paid. Any estimate is specific to the venue and time, and a card with few comparable sales carries more uncertainty.
Identify the exact card before comparing prices
A Pokémon’s name alone is not enough to establish a useful match. Record the details printed on the card and check the version carefully:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Card name and card number.
- Set or expansion, and year or edition where relevant.
- Language.
- Rarity or special marking, such as a promotional designation.
- Foil treatment, including holo or reverse holo, and any other variant.
A photo search or card scanner can suggest a match, but verify it against the card itself. eBay says its scanner may return alternative matches when it cannot identify a card confidently, and warns that foil cards may not be recognized correctly. Its trading-card seller guidance recommends including the franchise, edition or set, card name, grade and special features in a listing title; its Price Guide search can be refined by grader, grade, set, year and variant.

Assess condition and grading status
Ungraded cards
Inspect the front and back in good light. Check corners and edges for whitening or wear, and look for scratches, scuffs, dents, creases, stains, discoloration and other surface damage. A clean-looking front does not establish that a card is Near Mint. Use the marketplace’s condition terms consistently; eBay’s collectible-card categories include Near Mint or Better, Lightly Played, Moderately Played and Heavily Played.

- 50+ Pokemon Cards
- 5 Holos Guaranteed minimium per order
- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
Compare an ungraded card with raw copies that have similar visible wear. A broad condition label is only a starting point: a crease, stain or other notable defect can make two cards in the same category poor comparables.
Graded cards
For a card in a professional grading slab, note the grading company and numeric grade on the label. Compare it with sales of the same card graded by the same company at the same grade, when enough examples exist. Do not treat grades from different companies as automatically interchangeable.

Use completed sales, not asking prices
Start with completed transactions for the exact card and version, then narrow by condition or slab grade. Exclude mismatches such as a different language or printing, a multi-card lot, a damaged copy, or a slab with a different grade. Check the dates, sale format and number of comparable transactions, rather than letting one unusually high or low result define the estimate.

Its displayed median includes accepted Best Offer prices rather than only the original asking prices. The guide says its data refreshes every 24 hours and that prices can vary with condition, timing, demand and other factors. It currently supports English and Japanese Pokémon cards, draws primarily on eBay sales, and incorporates some outside context, including PSA and CGC population reports and the Card Ladder Index. It is available only in the US, so it is not a complete measure of global or every-market value.

eBay also describes a separate market-value feature in its Seller Center guidance as a proprietary estimate based on eBay transaction history that updates every few minutes in that particular market-value tool. That update cadence applies to that feature, not to the Price Guide. Treat either figure as a venue-specific estimate, not a guaranteed sale price.
Judge how strong the estimate is
Comparable sales are more informative when identity, condition, sale evidence and venue align. Use these checks to assess the evidence:

- Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Booster Bundle contains six booster packs from Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black.
- This is a great option for getting into the new Choas Rising expansion.
- A great gift for the Pokémon collector or player in your life.
- Identity: Same card, set, number, language, edition and foil or variant treatment.
- Condition: Similar raw condition and defects, or the same grading company and slab grade.
- Sale evidence: A completed sale is stronger evidence than an active listing. An accepted offer is more meaningful than the seller’s displayed original price.
- Recency and volume: Several recent comparable transactions provide a firmer basis than a single old sale. Rare cards with few sales warrant a wider, less certain estimate; eBay notes that rare, infrequently sold cards may return no results.
- Venue and geography: Results reflect a specific marketplace, currency, audience and transaction terms, not a universal price.
When only a few close matches exist, use a range and say that the evidence is thin instead of presenting a precise figure as certain. No card-specific dollar estimate is possible without knowing which Pokémon card and condition you mean.
Use the comps to make a buying or selling decision
If you are buying
Compare the offered card with sold copies that match its printing and condition. Consider shipping and other transaction terms as well as the card price. Comparable sales can help judge whether an asking price is plausible; they do not guarantee what you could later resell the card for.
If you are selling
Use the same comparable sales to choose an asking price and decide between an auction and a fixed-price listing. Describe defects plainly and photograph the front, back, blemishes and grading label clearly, as eBay’s seller guidance recommends. Accurate identification and condition disclosure help buyers judge whether a sale is truly comparable.
When marketplace authentication may apply
eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee policy covers eligible collectible card game single cards, subject to its program requirements. The policy generally sets a threshold of a Buy It Now price of $200 or more or an auction sale of $200 or more, and names Beckett, PSA, Certified Collectibles Group and SGC for graded cards. Geography also matters: the cited policy describes sales on eBay.com by sellers in the continental US or Canada to buyers in the continental US, with a limitation for US buyers purchasing graded cards from Canadian sellers. Check the current policy for a specific transaction; this is not a universal guarantee for every Pokémon-card sale or market.
