Use Eyes of Ender to locate a stronghold, find its End Portal room, fill the portal’s twelve frames, and enter the End. An Eye of Ender is made from an Ender pearl and blaze powder. When thrown in the Overworld, it flies toward the nearest stronghold, although it has a one-in-five chance of shattering on every use. Bring spare materials, follow the eye’s direction methodically, and prepare your equipment before activating the portal.

What a stronghold is and why you need one
A stronghold is an underground structure in the Overworld. Its corridors, staircases, libraries and side rooms eventually lead to a portal room. That room contains the End Portal, the gateway to the End dimension and the Ender Dragon encounter.

- Gather Ender pearls and blaze powder.
- Craft several Eyes of Ender.
- Use the eyes while travelling through the Overworld to follow their flight path.
- Search the stronghold for the portal room.
- Place an Eye of Ender in every empty portal-frame block.
- Enter the activated portal after preparing for the End.
What to gather before you search
Ender pearls
Ender pearls are one ingredient in an Eye of Ender. Collect enough to craft a search supply rather than making a single eye and hoping it survives. You may need multiple throws to correct your route, and each throw can consume the eye.

Blaze powder
Blaze powder is the second ingredient. Convert blaze rods into powder, then combine one Ender pearl with one blaze powder to craft one Eye of Ender. The recipe produces the item you need for both locating the stronghold and filling the portal.
Travel and excavation supplies
A stronghold is underground, so carry a pickaxe suitable for the blocks you expect to mine, torches or another way to mark explored passages, food, blocks for bridging or blocking hazards, and a weapon. A shield and spare tools make the search less risky. Keep your Eyes of Ender in an accessible hotbar slot so you can throw one without losing time when you need to check direction.

Do not treat the number of eyes in your inventory as the number required to finish. The portal has twelve frame positions, but some may already be filled when you find it. Conversely, travel consumes eyes unpredictably because every use has a one-in-five chance of shattering the eye.
How to use an Eye of Ender to locate the stronghold
1. Throw an eye in the Overworld
Hold an Eye of Ender and press your normal use button. It rises and travels in a particular direction. That direction leads toward the nearest stronghold. Start in an open area so you can see the flight clearly and avoid throwing it directly into a ceiling or wall.
2. Move in the direction it indicates
Travel the way the eye flew, then throw another eye after you have covered some ground. The eye is a direction check, not a permanent marker: it disappears after the flight, and you must use additional throws as you advance. Rechecking your heading prevents a small early mistake from turning into a long detour.

3. Watch for the turn
As you approach the stronghold, the eye’s guidance changes. It may begin directing you back toward an area you have already passed, or it may descend instead of continuing forward. That reversal is the signal to slow down and search around the point where the directions changed.
4. Conserve eyes without losing the route
Every throw carries a one-in-five chance that the Eye of Ender shatters. A failed throw is not proof that your direction was wrong; it simply means that eye was consumed. Throw only when the information is useful, keep your spare eyes safe, and leave yourself enough for the portal room. If your supply runs low before you locate the structure, return to gathering materials rather than entering an uncertain excavation with no way to finish the portal.
Finding the stronghold underground
Choose a careful entry point
When the eye starts reversing or dropping, mark the surface location. Dig down with care instead of mining straight beneath yourself. Use a staircase, a two-block-wide shaft, or another method that lets you retreat safely. A stronghold can intersect caves, ravines or other underground spaces, so listen and look for existing openings before committing to a deep shaft.
Mark every route
Strongholds contain branching corridors and rooms that can look similar. Place torches consistently, add blocks or signs at intersections, and record the direction back to the surface. Marking explored dead ends prevents repeated searches and makes it easier to return to the portal room after collecting supplies.
Search the structure rather than digging randomly
Explore corridors, staircases, libraries and side rooms systematically. The portal room is part of the generated structure, so follow connected passages before expanding a large mining grid. If a corridor appears to terminate, check nearby doorways and staircases; generation can make the route to the portal room less obvious than a straight hallway.

Recognize the portal room
The portal room contains a rectangular frame of twelve End Portal blocks, usually over a recessed lava area, with a staircase leading into the room. The frame is the feature that distinguishes the portal room from ordinary stronghold chambers. Secure the room before inserting eyes: block or light dangerous openings, remove hazards you can safely control, and make sure you have a clear path back out.
How many Eyes of Ender do you need?
The End Portal has twelve frame positions. To activate a completely empty frame, you would need twelve Eyes of Ender placed into those positions. In a generated portal room, one or two frames may already contain eyes, so the number you must place can be lower.
That portal requirement is separate from the eyes used for navigation. Because an eye has a 20% chance to shatter every time you use it, there is no fixed travel count that works for every world or route. Plan for navigation losses first, then retain enough eyes to fill every frame that is still empty. If you arrive with fewer than the number of empty frames, you must leave and gather more before the portal can activate.

Activating the End Portal
- Stand in the portal room and inspect all twelve frame blocks.
- Count the empty frames. Do not assume you need twelve if some already contain eyes.
- Hold an Eye of Ender and use it on each empty frame. The eye will occupy that frame.
- Continue until every frame position is filled.
- When the last required frame is completed, the portal surface activates. Entering it transfers you to the End.
The portal does not activate with eleven filled positions, even if the missing frame is difficult to see. Check the full rectangle from each corner and confirm that every empty socket has been filled. If nothing happens, count again and inspect the frame sides for an overlooked position.
Java and Bedrock: what differs
The Eye of Ender is the practical locating method in both editions, and both editions use the twelve-frame activation requirement. The important difference is how strongholds are distributed through the Overworld.

The ring information is useful context for Java players but does not replace the eye method. In Bedrock, the random distribution and 160-block minimum from original spawn make assumptions based on a familiar Java seed or ring location unreliable. In either edition, the eye’s current flight path is the actionable evidence.
Preparing for the End before you jump
Activating the portal is the midpoint of the journey, not the safe stopping point. The End is a separate dimension, and the Ender Dragon is its main completion challenge. Organize your inventory while you are still in the portal room so you do not have to return immediately after entering.

- Carry strong armor, food and spare tools.
- Keep building blocks available for movement and emergency cover.
- Bring a water bucket or another familiar defensive tool if it is part of your normal survival strategy.
- Store valuable replacement items in a secure base before the jump, because an unsuccessful fight can make recovery difficult.
- Leave a clear trail from the portal room to the surface, using the marks you made during exploration.
Once you enter the active portal, you are committed to the End until you use the available return route. Do not fill the final frame while carrying irreplaceable items you are unwilling to risk.

The eye keeps breaking
Breaking is a normal outcome: every use has a one-in-five chance of shattering the eye. Craft or collect more Ender pearls and blaze powder, then resume from the last marked location. Avoid wasting throws when the direction is already obvious.
The eye appears to point backward
A reversal usually means you have passed or are close to the stronghold area. Return toward the point where the direction changed, throw another eye, and begin a careful surface search. Do not continue travelling indefinitely in the original direction.

You reached a cave but cannot see the stronghold
The structure may be nearby but separated from the cave by solid blocks. Follow the direction checks, mark your position, and excavate a controlled staircase or short tunnel. Search for connected corridors once you intersect the structure instead of digging a large, unmarked network.

Use a systematic sweep. Mark every branch, inspect staircases and side rooms, and close off dead ends after checking them. Libraries and corridors can make the structure feel larger than it is; a map-like torch pattern keeps you from circling the same rooms.
The portal will not activate
Inspect all twelve frame positions. Every empty frame must receive an Eye of Ender, and one missing eye is enough to prevent activation. Some frames may already have eyes, so count the sockets rather than inserting eyes into positions that are already occupied. If you still lack enough eyes, leave the stronghold through your marked route, gather materials, and return.
I am unsure which edition’s advice applies
The locating and activation procedures are shared: use Eyes of Ender and complete all twelve frames. Apply the generation distinction only to expectations about where strongholds may be distributed. Java’s concentric rings and Bedrock’s random distribution are world-generation rules, not separate search controls.
A compact route checklist
- Gather Ender pearls and blaze powder.
- Craft multiple Eyes of Ender, not just one.
- Throw an eye in the Overworld and follow the direction it flies.
- Repeat throws as you travel, allowing for the one-in-five shatter chance.
- When the eye reverses or descends, mark the area and dig carefully.
- Explore stronghold corridors, staircases, libraries and side rooms until you find the portal room.
- Count the twelve frame positions and fill every empty one.
- Check your armor, weapons, food, blocks and recovery plan.
- Enter the activated portal to reach the End.
The essential answer
Find a stronghold by crafting Eyes of Ender from Ender pearls and blaze powder, throwing them in the Overworld, and travelling in the direction each eye takes. Expect some eyes to shatter. At the stronghold, search for the portal room, fill every empty position in its twelve-block frame, and only then enter the activated portal. Java’s strongholds follow concentric rings, while Bedrock’s are randomly distributed and at least 160 blocks from the original spawn, but the Eye of Ender method works in both editions.
